Best

This is one of the best places to eat in the area. They are very nice and the service is great. Check out all the tea selections they have, yum.

Tasty and relaxing 11/27/2007

I've eaten here several times and always have a good experience. The menu is diverse and affordable. My wife and I always get 5+ dishes. The sea bass and chili crab and amazing. The staff is very friendly and the setting is relaxing and casual. more

Just average and pricey 11/6/2006

The food was OK, nothing special, and the portions were small for the price. We had 2 appetizers, and 3 entrees, the ostrich, pepper prawns and seabass. I felt it was not enough food for 4 people. We ordered rice for 4 and it came in a bowl as if it were for 2 people. I would look for another Singaporean restaurant in the Bay Area. Pros: Easy parking Cons: Value, small portions more

Very good asian 8/17/2006

This is one of the best places to eat in the area. They are very nice and the service is great. Check out all the tea selections they have, yum. more

Singapore Fusion!!! 8/10/2006

This is authentic singaporean: malay based recipes with chinese cook, mixed in with some indian and then misprononounced to be something you can call Singlish. I like to look at the menu and see chicken rice SURROUNDED by chili based foods. It looks like a little yellow dot in a sea of red. more

Finally, Lunch for Adults ... 4/17/2006

I recently got the ""Cholesterol lecture"" from my doctor ... no panic, just eat better and exercise. I quickly discovered how hard is was to eat well for lunch. A burger with fries? Eeek! I finally found Shiok. For $6.95 I get a tasty (and surprisingly healthy) complete meal with meat, rice, vegetable and salad. And not garbage steam table Chinese. Don't tell the doctor that we share the Roti Prata (bread with curry dipping sauce) for appetizer. Pros: Great Lunch, Nice Environment Cons: One Hour Parking more

Keeps you coming back for more!! 3/5/2006

Great food and service all round. It's authentic SINGAPORE food... nothing like your make believe fusion types. Neither is it Malaysian or Indonesian cuisine. If you have been to Singapore you'd definitely agree. Prices are reasonable. Considering the sauces and the spices that they use, well, they are to die for. A great blend of taste to boot. We tried the chilli prawns and the pepper crab and it made me miss Singapore so much more. A novel way of serving on plastic plates... cos of the ""hawker-center"" culture in Sinapore. I'd definitely go back. Pros: friendly servers, easy parking, homely environment Cons: packed on weekends more

Expensive and Not Authentic 10/28/2005

We tried the beef samosas which had no beef. Waitress suggested that the beef and vegetarian samosas look the same. Cost $6 for 2 small-ish samosas filled with just potato. We had Hokkien Mee - not authentic Malaysian Hokkien Mee with dark sauce. This dish had barely any sauce or taste. We tried Nonya Fish - tasty but not crispy as advertised. Ambience quite nice. However, every dish was served on a plastic plate - tacky! Overall prices are ok but not worth it for the quality of food. Food arrived quickly. Service was good. There are better Singapore/Malaysian restaurants with better prices - Banana Island, Westlake and Mango Bay, Redwood Shores. A disappointing experience. We will not go back! Pros: decent service, quick food, nice ambience Cons: plastic plates, food not authentic, relatively expensive more

Fabulous food 7/18/2005

I tried this place on the recommendation of a friend...and loved it so much I went back twice more in the same week! The appetizers (sort of tapas style) are fabulous...and the coconut rice...yummy. The dessert menu is not huge...but sooooooo good...coconut ice cream, fried bananas...I'm salivating just thinking about it. Ambience is pretty good, easy to take friends there, not too loud or anything. Service is a little lackadaisical, but the food makes up for it. Pros: Easy parking, Decent prices, Great food Cons: Small dining area more

Definitely new and improved 6/18/2005

Had dinner at shiok last night and was surprised at how different it is now. the deco is much better. love their music selection. the tapas style menu is definitely a great idea. still love their roti prata and the little curry sauce that comes with it. tried their new dish BBQ salmon. definitely not your regular BBQ dish! Their dessert menu is still too small. guess they are not big on dessert in that part of the world. Will definitely go back with some friends again. Pros: good parking, good music, good service Cons: crowded, not enough dessert more

great addition to the neighbourhood 10/26/2004

we dine out frequently and love trying new food. we were surprised to find this unique restaurant in menlo park. we've never had singapore food and were happy that they have so many small plate selections. all the dishes were tasty and different with complex flavors. we loved the tofu and indian bread with curry. we had six small plate dishes between the 2 of us and were full! we will definitely go back to try the other dishes on the menu but the next time, we will bring friends so that we can try the crab dishes and order more. Pros: small plates, nice ambience, complex flavors Cons: , limited dessert more

Great New Look 7/18/2004

I've been going here for a couple of years and never been disappointed. Earlier this year they ""refreshed"" the look of the place to make it even more welcoming (especially at night). In other words, this is not a flourescent lighting, red paper lantern asian place. Take recommendations during your first visit and then explore the menu from there. The Chili Crab is fantastic ... just know going in that it's in the shell and you need to work for the pleasure. Pros: True Singaporean Food, Attractive New Look, Not a Food Factory more

authentic taste 7/7/2004

I love their chilli crabs. It tastes so authentic with no pretentious efforts to make it a fushion style that we commonly find in Asian restaurants these days. Service and ambience is a bit family style so don't expect too much. Yet, this is the place where I'll go for real food with close friends so I can be messy with my crabs. Pros: tasty food more

A Great Mix ... People and Food 7/2/2003

Menlo Park is awfully white. This place isn't. On the Friday night we went by the customers ranged from adventurous blue-haired Menlo-ites to Indian families, young yuppie couples and what appeared to be a party of 20 Taiwanese. Must be cause the food is great and the prices are good. One of the owners was a great host as well. Pros: Interesting Crowd, Great Food, Good Price Cons: What Else in Menlo?, Not Romantic more

The Real Singapore Restaurant 4/16/2003

Now there are lots of restaurants serving Singapore / Malaysian / Indonesian food. Straits is fine is you want Cal-fusion. But if you are looking for authentic ""hawker""-style food this is it. The downside is that the prices are not at the hawker-center level (S$4 for Laksa). And if it's winter, don't sit by the door cause its cold Pros: Authentic, S'pore Ladies Own, Lots of Parking Cons: Not Cheap more

great value 4/5/2003

We ate at this neighbourhood restaurant afew weeks ago and loved it. the menu was interesting with lots of seafood, meat dishes and good mix of spicy and non spicy dishes. We loved the Pepper Crab, Roti Prata and ostrich. the kids loved the char kuay teow. We went back with our vegetarian friends last week and had a great time with the selection of vegetarian dishes. Our favorites were the crispy tofu and mee goreng. Lots of interesting drinks too. Only down side, dessert selection is rather small. great value and friendly service. will be back! Pros: nice ambience, kid and group friendl, many vegetarian dish Cons: crowded, need more dessert more

Big Flavors, Medium Prices, Small Family 4/5/2003

Shiok! is a great example of Singaporean food. For the most part, we're not talking subtle mingling of gentle tastes but rather big flavors. Roti prata (a crispy-chewy flat bread) with curry dipping sauce is not to miss. One of the prime, gentler dishes is sea bass steamed in a banana leaf envelope for under $15. Just be aware that this is a family business ... both good and bad. Not very professional but lots of heart. Pros: Food, Passion, Value Cons: Lack of Prof Service more

Fun, but don't expect too much. 2/6/2003

In trying to condense my experience at Shiok down to 150 words, I'm filled with lots of contradictions. The menu was creative and highly varied, but the food was only decent. The atmosphere was bland and far too bright, but the service was impeccable - the manager made us feel like he took a personal interest in our dinner. The food was unusually spiced and often hot, but the wine list was impoverished and couldn't provide anything to complement our meal. In conclusion, we had a lot of fun at Shiok, but we probably won't go again. Pros: incredible service, quiet, creative menu Cons: so-so food, poor wine list more
