BEST Sushi 1/17/2010

This is the best sushi restaurant we have been to in the city. The roll selection is amazing and the prices can't be beat. We also love the waitresses. The only con is that we wish it was bigger. Pros: Great food/byob Cons: Too Small more

Best sushi even better then RAW 12/9/2009

My friend Mikey was talking about this BYOB for a long time so we finally made reservation for 5. Our server Jessica was amazing she was very friendly and out going. Everything came out in a timely matter. The sushi by far was better then RAW and affordable. It was such a pleasant evening, When it was time for them to close the restaurant they never made us leave or even tried to kick us out because it was getting late. I def will be going back there and soon, one of my fav BYOB's. And ask for Jessica when you go beautiful girl and a great server more

Love this place!! 9/18/2008

I have been going to shinju for about a year now and it has never disappointed. The waitresses are very friendly, the restaurant is very cozy and who can complain about the BYO. The rolls are all so good and interesting. The sushi is very fresh and their udon soup is delicious. I no longer live in Philly but whenever I am visiting I make a trip to shinju. I can't think of a better sushi place and I have had sushi in many restaurants in many cities. Pros: BYOB, fresh sushi, friendly service Cons: small space, sometimes there is a wait more

too much misleading hype 9/5/2008

the best part was the appetizer. almost every roll is made with those cheap crab sticks. there were 3 sushi chefs and it took them longer to serve a smaller room than it did 2 sushi chefs to serve a room double the size at one of our favorite sushi places in Montgomeryville. The fish was fresh but the rolls were small and expensive for what they were worth. it seemed like a great place for a novice sushi eater who has to have Sapporo (distributed by Coors) with his meal Pros: trendy design, great apetizers Cons: slow service, expensive, cheap crab sticks in most rolls more

Amazing 7/17/2008

Being a very picky sushi eater, i stumbled upon this little restaurant by reading someone's review online. What an amazing find. The sushi is so fresh it melts in your mouth, the waitress is always friendly and willing to answer questions. It's great that you can bring your own (you spend less) and the atmosphere is so cute. Out of the tons of sushi restaurants i have tried, this really is the best. My fiance and I drive an hour just to eat here. My favorite place in Philly! I wish they opened one in NJ. more

Awesome sushi! 6/17/2008

This restaurant really does have some of the tastiest sushi rolls. I'm actually a fan of the veggie/cooked fish rolls so Shinju becomes the perfect place for me. I can get a multitude of speciality veggie rolls and combos. I concur wholeheartedly that they know how to do take out. It is great to come home after a hard day's work and treat yourself to a real feast of tasty, fresh rolls. Pros: quick, clean, fresh, tasty, excellent selections Cons: a touch small (be forewarned if a group of 20 wants to drop in) more

Phreshest Fish in Philly! 4/28/2008

As experienced sushi eaters, we are happy to say that Shinju has earned our vote as the ""Best Sushi in Philadelphia."" Our first experience of dining at Shinju left a lasting impression of fresh quality fish and impeccable service that has only grown over the past year. Pros: Service and Fresh Quality more

A gem - and they deliver, too! 12/18/2007

We weren't expecting much - we'd gotten Shinju's menu through our front door and I remembered mostly that they delivered. Boy, did they deliver. We're not big fans of rolls so we ordered just nigiri and chirashi and one spicy roll with something like avocado and sea urchin. Wow. The fish was so fresh in flavor, so pristine in texture, so beautiful to see, so beautifully cut. The roll was unusual and delicious, and the flavors and textures were perfectly balanced. The heat was searing and lingering. As good as Zento, possibly as good as Morimoto but it's been a while. Even the soy sauce was delicate, rich and flavorful. The rice alone left something to be desired - it seemed a tiny bit hard. more

Best Sushi in Philly 7/3/2007

My partner and I LOVE this place. Inexpensive, cozy and the service is great with a smile. The sushi is Phenomenal by the way. We highly recommend it to everyone. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Favorite sushi place in Philly! 11/30/2006

Great ambiance, excellent service, wonderful presentation, and absolutely, melt-in-your-mouth, dream about all day, sushi! more

Best Sushi spot in town! Love these guys! 9/19/2006

With their interesting sense of humor, as evidenced by their graphic-splashed wall decor, and their intimate dining space, Shinju makes for a wonderful little night out. The menu items are both traditional and creative and their price point is right in line with other, less impressive, Japanese places in town. For two of us to enjoy sushi, sashimi, rolls, miso, tofu and seaweed salad, the tab came to about $50.00. VERY reasonable. The owners/sushi chefs are humble and sweet, the table service is exemplary and the place is CLEAN! Yayy for Shinju!!! One of my top five regular haunts in Philly :) Pros: Small space, quick service, good price Cons: Ummm... parking, I guess (if you have a car in the city) more

Great sushi, cozy atmosphere 6/23/2006

We just ate here last night. It's small and reminds me of NYC. The sushi was great. They have a traditional menu as well as about half a dozen specialty rolls that I've never seen before and we eat a lot of sushi. Presentation was also great. It's a BYOB. Pros: Great sushi. BYOB. Cons: Limited parking and seating. more

Excellent sushi and service! 5/20/2006

Shinju has fantastic sushi (the best we've had in Philly after Morimoto). The sushi is always fresh and the rolls are artfully presented. (We've never seen so many creative types of rolls.) Appetizers such as edamame and shrimp shumai keep our 3-year old happy and full. Service is excellent, and the staff is very friendly to children. We can't recommend this hidden gem highly enough! Pros: Quality, Presentation, Service more

Best sushi in Philly 5/18/2006

In my opinion, this is some of the best sushi I have ever had. The presentation is beautiful, the waitstaff is friendly, and the sushi is always fresh. My boyfriend and I have made it ""our spot."" Before we knew it was BYOB, we asked for a sake list and, even though they obviously did not have one, our waitress brought sake for us compliments of the chef! Highly recommended! Pros: Value, Presentation, Quality Cons: Absolutely none! more

NICELY DONE! 2/15/2006

I was searching cozy japanese restaurant for valentine's day. After reading the reviews, shinju seemed like what we were looking for. Valentine's day decorations and restaurant color were impressive. When main dish was served, we were suprised. It was beautiful and nicely done. They made shape of heart out of rolls, which we thought was thoughtful. We had great romantic time. more

Pleasant surprise ! 1/1/2006

I was walking with my boy friend one night and we saw the sign of a sushi bar. As we walked in, I liked the ambience very much. It was totally different from regular Sushi bar with having unusual color on wall. It was small but very cozy. AND the foods were so good ! We tried some of their special menu. Rock and roll, Volcano, Hakko sushi, Super dragon and sweet shrimp. Everything was just wonderful ! My boy friend and I were very pleased by the fact we 'd found a fine sushi bar nearby our apartment. Pros: Nice interior, Special menu, Inexpensive Cons: BYOB more

I really like their holiday decorations, too. It's really nice to enjoy holiday with frends at cosy place. Pros: inexpensive, great food more
