We have been bringing our dogs to Karla Gorman for many years. Over those many years she has helped two Airedales, two Westies plus an occasional visit by one of our daughter's 2 terriers when they are in town (we love the challenge of living with 'willful dogs'). Dr. G & her staff are highly skilled and very compassionate. We honestly believe that she saved the lives of both Airedales, Cassie had two cancers, the1st successfully removed & the second held off for 4-5 years before I had her put down while I sat with her - lots of tears and lots of caring. Our current Airedale developed a combined encephalitis & meningitis shortly after he was rescued. Karla provided meds to assist & most wisely sent us to a neurological veterinary specialist who was able to treat Maxx's condition with successful techniques that were ""outside the box"". It helped that Dr. Julie Hass (Milford, MI) was a neurological specialist and familiar to Dr. Gorman. No doctor is perfect but Karla Gorman is very good.\r Doug K., Plymouth, MI more

On July 25, 2014 I brought my grand-dog, Molly, in to Sheldon Veterinary Hospital. Molly had a growth on her shoulder and was frequently leaking urine. Blood was drawn and I was told the results would be back within two days. I was also sent home with antibiotics for her. It took three phone calls and five days to get a phone call back. I was told that Molly had no infection and no cancer, and I could pick up thyroid medication for her. There was no follow up after that. On August 5, 2014 Molly's tumor had grown significantly. I took her to a different Vet who scheduled surgery for August 8 to remove the tumor but that surgery never happened because Molly was too sick by then. On August 9, 2014 Molly died due to heart failure from a serious kidney infection. I called Sheldon Veterinary Hospital and requested a refund of $378 for my July 25 visit. My phone call was not returned and my refund request was not honored. more

We've been going to Dr. Gorman for over ten years now with my dogs and cats, and wouldn't go anywhere else! She has helped us through many a crises with my senior animals; helping them to live longer and more quality lives. Her combined use of complimentary/holistic medicine as well as conventional medical practice has given my pets the best of both worlds. The compassion shown by Dr. Gorman and her Staff is exemplary; they go above and beyond to help; with a never ending supply of patience; always willing to take the time to explain what's going on as well as the treatment plan. Dr. Gorman's touch is well worth the 45 minute drive! more

DON'T TRUST DR. GORMAN 7/31/2013

I am convinced that the good reviews must be from staff members of Sheldon Vet, or friends of Dr. Gorman, because she is a horrible veterinarian! My dog is dead today and I believe with all of my heart that her lack of skills and compassion played a significant role in his death. Not only did she prescribe him medication that was not recommended for dogs his age, she admitted that she knew the medicine had bad side affects, but they were rare. Who cares if it's rare?? If it can happen, then for crying out loud, don't prescribe it without telling the pet owner the possibilities. I even researched the meds before giving it to my dog, but found nothing until after he had an adverse affect from them. Dr. Gorman should lose her license to practice. more

I love Dr Gorman and so do our pets! I had such a hard time finding a vet after we left New York, that understood that my pets were my children. I found Carla to be very friendly and warm and both my dogs and cats love her. I only wish her office was closer to where we live, but I feel so strongly about her that I do drive the hour to get to see her. I love the fact that she is the one doctor in the office. I could not stand going to ""CONGLOMO"" Vet where every time you went there was a new doctor with a new treatment idea. more

Pure Evil 10/5/2012

I want to strongly urge you to not take your animals here. \r \r I went to see Dr. Gorman on a Saturday. My cat needed her anal glands expressed and Dr.Gorman suggested that they use gas anesthesia to have her asleep during the procedure. My cat has had gas anethesia before and has handled it with no problems.\r \r Well, when my cat woke up she was EXTREMELY sick. She was shaking and could not walk and was very lethergic. They told me that she would be fine and sent me on my way. My cat was NOT fine. In fact, she started vomitting. Over and over again. \r \r When I called Dr. Gorman's office, no one was there as it was Saturday. Turns out this cold-hearted b*tch doesn't feel the need to list an emergency number in case she poisons an animal. Her voicemail did direct me to an a vet ER that was nearby. I took my cat here and they wanted to keep her overnight. Except they said I had to pay $1,800 dollars UP FRONT for them to do this "or she may die". I called a vet I used to go to and she helpe more

Beware of Dr. Gorman 4/19/2011

Dr. Gorman caused great harm to my precious dog. She prescribed medication that was dangerous for his pre-existing condition and ultimately caused him to lose his hearing, she gave him x-rays that exposed him to dangerous radiation and caused his hair to fall out, she was always in a hurry to get me in and out so she could get the next person in. I suspect it's all about money for Dr. Gorman. When I confronted her about all of this, she told me I can't expect her to check every little thing on my dog. I love my dog so much and he's 13-years-old now. He may just be $$$ to her, but to me, he's a precious animal that has been a faithful companion for many years. I don't know if the person who wrote the good review about her is a staff member or a friend, but clearly they are not telling the truth. I didn't want to give a one-star rating, but you have to put something. Actually I would give a minus one if that were possible. more

Caring and analytic 2/9/2011

Dr. Gorman and staff have been WONDERFUL. We have had such good experiences that we recommended her to my parents when they became uncomfortable with care recommendations for the aging family dog from their own vet. Our (my fiance and I) dog is a three-year-old rescue bulldog that we adopted at age 2. Being a rescue, we had no way of knowing that she is severely epileptic and prone to cluster seizures. After a large emergency bill, I began to research veterinarians in our area that integrated holistic medicine into their practices, as I am quite familiar with some of the harsh side effects of classic epilepsy medication and I certainly didn't want that kind of life for our dog. We decided to give Dr. Gorman a try and couldn't be happier. With a combination of dietary adjustments, traditional medicine (at lower doses) and herbal supplements, our dog has been seizure and head tremor-free for six months and is as bright, energetic and alert as a puppy. As for the family dog, Dr. Gorman's recommendations got her eating where she had stopped, responding where she had been lethargic, and alert where she had been unresponsive. Her quality time on this earth was extended by at least ten months. Last month the time came where she had nothing left to give, and Dr. Gorman helped her to peacefully transition out of this world, a comfort for which my broken-hearted family could not be more grateful. I very enthusiastically recommend Dr. Gorman. We will turn to her for the care of our pets for a very long time to come. more

Saved our dog's life. 1/5/2010

I have no doubt that Sheldon Vet/Dr. Gorman saved my dog, Max's life 3 years ago. She recognized a serious & unusual neurological problem. She provided meds to begin to counter what turned out to be both encephalitis & meningitis. Just as important she had me contact a neurological vet (Dr. Haas in Milford) who was able to perform the specialized treatment to help Max to recover completely. In addition Dr. Gorman's holistic approach solved a long standing problem that Max had with ear infections by suggesting that we switch to a raw food diet. At 6 Max has the energy & super terrier behavior of a two year old. As a side benefit his teeth are plague free. (BTW Max was a neglected 2 year old when we adopted him.) more

Not helpful at all 4/1/2009

Went to see this vet for a growth in my dogs mouth. She looked at it like she had no idea what it was and told me to give it a few days. Also maybe it was cancer!!! I don't wait on something like that! I was in and out in less then 10 mins, I noticed my dog has swollen lymph nodes which she didn't even check. This was not worth $42!!!! more

Great Vet 11/10/2008

I learned about Sheldon Veterinary Hospital when one of my collies was very ill. I drive from 35 miles away to bring my dogs and do not consider going anywhere else. Dr. Gorman takes time to discuss any problems and she practices a holistic type of care. The atmosphere is very cozy and the dogs are less anxious here. more

The vet is great... staff not so much 6/30/2008

I think Dr. gorman is a great vet. Not many vets practice holistic medicine around here, and that is why I take my dogs there. She does what is only necessary for your dogs health, unlike other vets who prescribe medication for just about anything, when Dr. Gorman will try to figure out what the real problem is.\r The negative side to this vet is that the staff is very unorganized. They do not communicate well with each other, and there was a few times I made appointments came in and they have no idea what my pet was being seen for. If you can get past the staffs poor professional book keeping skills then I would recommend taking your pet there for the long-term health benefits Dr. Gorman provides. more

Terrific Pet Care 5/27/2008

Have been bringing my dogs here since the early 1990's, and although a 30 minute drive, the level of care is definitely worth the drive. We've tried other Vet. Clinics, and don't feel we received the personalized service we believe important to us and our pets. Others felt pushy selling prescriptions and supplements, while this hospital points out the benefits versus the possible negatives to allow owners to make a knowledgeable choice. Natural remedies are also an option, which we prefer when possible to improve our pets' health. \r Everyone is friendly, loves pets, and provide a cozy environment for the best pet care we've found. more

Great Animal Care with a cozy feel 11/20/2005

I love this place. I will never take my pets anywhere else. I hated the larger vets where there was always a different doctor and I felt like we were on an assembly line. This place knows me and my dog and cats and make us feel like part of the family. PROS: Very Friendly and Excellent Care CONS: Appointment Availability (sometimes) more
