MY DREAM CHRISTNING GOWN 5/11/2008

We went to Sew Special to have a Christening gown made for my first born daughter. They told me about a great place to go and get the fabric and they helped me with picking out the style for the Gown. They made everything very eeeesy for me. When I went to pick up the dress it looked like the one I Always Dreamed Of . Also, they suggested to have a blanket made for her Maching The Same Style For The Gown.And Boy was it a great idea. The people are nice and professional. I would recommend everyone to go to Sew Special for any special sewing project that they have . I won't go anywhere else for my sewing needs. more

Mae really understands clothes and tailoring! I brought in two vintage dresses of my mother's that are very special to me. She understood how 50 year-old clothes are made and was able to alter them perfectly, even tho the fabric is old and delicate and one dress had multiple challenges. I've brought other things there too: dress pants w/ sequins, formalwear. If the item is something you care about, is for a special occassion, is delicate or unusual, Sew Special is the place. Everyone's nice and friendly and I would trust any of the seastresses and tailors that I've met there! Pros: They really are experts Cons: congested area on weekends more

Great help in emergency! 5/8/2008

I went to Sew Special when I had a bridesmaid dress emergency. The wedding was in a week and I needed to have the dress let out. I took the dress to them and they said yes when other tailors had told me no. They understood I had no other option and were very accommodating. I took the dress in on a Saturday and I picked it up the next Wednesday! Not only that, but the work was fabulous. The dress fit perfectly without any additional work. The price was reasonable considering the work and timeframe. Would definitely recommend them! more

Sew Special tailors are the best I've found 5/5/2008

The tailors at Sew Special at 2921 are real magicians. I was supposed to attend a Mardi Gras ball in New Orleans, but sadly, I had outgrown my beautiful gown, In fact, I had outgrown almost everything in my closet, thanks to a medication that made me gain wright, and was spending a fortune replacing enough clothes to show up in public. Mike and his mother designed a change to my ball gown that allowed me to fit in it; the gown was the belle of the ball. Even better, they were able to figure out ways to make many of my other clothes fit. It was a lot less expensive than buying replacements, and I was able to wear clothes I loved. And did I mention, the prices are reasonable, given the quality of the work. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Pros: Creative solutions to tailoring problems Cons: Parking is a problem...busy neighborhood, day or night. more

Great Service and wonderful work! 5/2/2008

I came to Sew Special to have a prom dressed for my cousin who lives in Minneapolis. The service here is great, they took care of us. They scheduled her fittings in accordance to when my cousin was able to come to Chicago. I highly recommend to place for you custom needs. The dress is beautiful and it didn't cost that much money. The best tailors in chicago, no lie!!! its as if i bought my suit at her shop. WOW work, VERY friendly, GREAT prices. you cant beat that with a stick!!! I highly recommend anyone to go there. She has been in business for 47 years, quality work that cant be beat. Agian, she did a better job as opposed to the manfacturer themselves. trust me on this one. It was hard to find someone that can do the job she did. i am always always always going there for any alterations. WOW! Plus Size Custom Formal Gowns 3/28/2008

I am a plus size woman and just had a gown made for performances (I'm an opera singer and recitalist). The fit was georgeous. The staff was quite careful with making sure that the dress did fit me comfortably while not fitting the dress too loose or too tight. They advised me of the materials and the style necessary to make sure that I looked my best as I gave them many pictures to consider (they made sure that of the choices given I selected the best dress for my figure and general style). They do measure carefully to make sure that my body type and shape is taken into account for the garment. For plus size women, this is quite important. I enjoyed working with Sew Special to make this dress something quite special. This is not a place to go to if you want a ""cheap"" gown. A successful garment will cost, but Sew Special makes the cost worth it. In the end, I have a dress that I can wear comfortably and look quite attractive on stage. The dress was not ""frumpy"" or ""mother of the bride"" looking. They do excellent beading, so if you desire a beaded formal garment, Sew Special is the best. By the way, parking is tight in the area, so best make appointments in the morning or early afternoon during the weekdays. Pros: Friendly, knowlegable staff; good corner location, everyone in the shop knows their craft Cons: Parking in the area is tight. more

Incredible detail 12/19/2007

I ordered some custom designed stockings for my family and what I got was the most beautifully detailed, incredibly crafted stockings. They were beyond what I imagined. Sew Special Tailors was personal and professional throughout the process, consulting with me all along the way. Service was great and the sweet egyptian couple working there were wonderful. Its a very charming place and they seem to genuinely care. I would highly reccomend this to anyone and everyone. AT LAST FOUND REAL TAILORS 10/30/2007

NOTHING BUT GOOD QUALITY WORK, THE FIRST TIME WENT TO SEW SPECIAL COUPLE OF YEARS AGO TO GET MY WEDDING TUXEDO SUIT CUSTOM MADE AND IT JUST WAS A WONDERFULL EXPERIENCE FIRST TIME I CHOSE FABRIC AND THEN 2 VISITS LATER HERE I HAVE THE BEST FITTING SUIT I EVER OWNED THEY ARE VERY CREATIVE THEY SUGGESTED SOME DETAILS THAT MADE MY SUIT EVEN MORE ELEGANT THAN WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. THEY ALSO MADE MY BOWTIE AND MY CUMBERBUND FOR ME AND FOR ALL MY BRIDAL PARTY. IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO WRITE THIS REVIEW. BUT NOW ME AND MY WIFE STILL GO THERE FOR ALL OUR SEWING NEEDS FROM ALTERATIONS TO THE COMPLETE BED SET THAT THEY CUSTOM MADE FOR US FROM SCRATCH. more

I went to Sew Special in a desperate situation. I had ordered a bridesmaid dress fand a month before the wedding I learned the designer went bankrupt and I was not getting a dress. Without a pattern or even a picture of the dress I needed I went to Sew Special. I found them on the internet and only had the online reviews as recommendations. more

Sew Special - Great alterations and dry cleaning 10/4/2007

The quality of service is fantastic. Mike, the owner, personally does all of my fittings b/c some of my alterations tend to be a bit complicated. I am always extremely happy with the alterations and if a piece happens not to be ""just right"" they will gladly re-alter at no charge. Their customer service is very good and they are timely is their dry cleaning and alteration turn around time. I moved out of state and when I moved back I tried a few different tailors/dry cleaners that were closer to my apartment but none compared to Sew Special and I happily returned to them. more

Extremely professional 7/22/2007

After ordering my bridesmaid dress from a bridal store and receiving it, I put it it on and it was a nightmare. I took it to Sew Special, and with talking and working with Mike, he made the dress beautiful. The dress is so beautiful and tailored to my body that I can now wear it to other events. While I was there, I noticed a hole in my skirt, Mike sewed it up on the spot free of charge. Sew Special was a great experience, and I disagree with the negative reviews that have been written. I was only treated professionally and with respect. Mike even scheduled my appointments at the Clark Street store because it is closer to my home. They're not just tailors! 7/18/2007

For the second time my company went straight to Sew Special to complete an important order. We worked with Mike to have him and his team custom make pillows for us in a variety of colors with different logos embroidered onto them. It was a very larger order and each pillow came out perfectly and we received everything on time. Thanks to Mike and Sew Special for another stress free experience! more

Great alterations but way overpriced 7/3/2007

I brought in a bridesmaid dress in for alterations. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and knew what needed to be done and then some. But shop was messy and I was uncomfortable in the dressing area which consisted of a drape blocking off an area in the middle of the shop. more

Quality alterations and very knowlegeable and friendly staff 6/29/2007

I brought a baby quilt as well as a bridesmaid dress into Sew Special and I was extremely pleased with the quality as well as the friendliness of the staff. The baby quilt that I had to have them finish up for me (in less than 1 week) was a complete disaster when I brought it in and they were able to create a masterpiece for what I believe (based on the amount of labor that I knew went into it) was a very reasonable price. more

I have had several dresses altered here and the experience is always positive. The women are very friendly and clearly are very knowledgeable about how to make clothes fit well. It's a little on the expensive side (alterations to my bridesmaid dress cost $115), but close to what I hear about other good tailoring places. more

I DID MY SKETCH FOR MY GOWN NOT REALY PROFFESIONALY SKETCHED BUT THE IDEA OF IT! AND THATS ALL THEY NEEDED WITH THEIR CREATIVE IDEAS AND CREATIONS THEY MADE IT COME TRUE THANKS FOR ALL THEIR HELP AND PATIENTS. THEY EVEN HAND BEADED MY GOWN . THATS BESIDE MY 8 BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES THEY ALL HAD PERFECT CUSTOM FITTED DRESSES. AND THEIR NICE OPINION WE MADE THE BESTMEN BOWTIES AND CUMMBERBUNDS FROM THE SAME FABRIC FOR THE BRIDESMAIDS, THAT WAS A NICE TOUTCH I WOULD HAD NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THIS IDEA. TO MAKE STORY SHORT THANK GOD I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND THIS PLACE FOR MY ONE AND ONLY WEDDING. VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. more
