Editorial review from Citysearch 7/29/2013

This place is a rarity in finding ""homey"" food that is not too salty or overly sweet. As Soul food can be great if the cooks would use a lighter touch with the salt and sugar.\r \r Great food, good people keep up the tradition. And, thank you for giving us a place to get vegetables. more

Very poor customer service 4/1/2011

I have been a patron of the Serving Spoon for years and have enjoyed the food so I decided to share my experience with visiting family this past March 22nd. After finding parking which was not easy, I was greeted by a woman around 10:45am who noticed that I had a thermo mug in hand and she immediately admonished me that I could not come in with that. I told her I was going to purchase more coffee when I finished what I had and she said that I still could not come in. I told her that this was never required before and no one ever said I could not in the past. At this point I escorted my family who was visiting from Texas to another resultant that I frequent and they were glad to serve me, mug and all. I was very angry and disturbed not only as a patron, but because the woman could not see past her policy to use this as an opportunity to invite visiting people in and allow me to enter and still let me know about the policy for future visits. You may have lost a customer and I will be writing a review to your site. Gee more

No Complaints, Just Compliments! 4/14/2009

Serving Spoon Reigns with the Crown of Divine Breakfast Spot! Dining aside singer, Raphael Saadiq, alone maintains my interest. But the food is what keeps me coming back. Boo, order Angie's Special #2!!! more

Yuck! Hair in my food! 3/10/2009

This was the first time I dined at the restaurant. When I told the hostess about the hair in my food she said she would take care of it. Then the server brought us our check. I was still being charged for the food. I asked the server about the hair in my food. She then said she was going to tell the manager. When the manager made it to the table she looked at me as if I was a criminal. She said ""I already talked to my cooks and they said it was not theirs. My cooks are Mexican!"" To sum it all up I had to pay for my food and with no apology. This tells me a great deal of a restaurant. If they will let that happen.... who knows what other nasty disgusting things they are doing in their kitchen? Cons: Horrible customer service! more

Best Breakfast Place! 12/9/2008

The Serving Spoon has the best breakfast ever! The waffles and the french toast is so amazing! You have to try this place! more

Stayin true to the roots 12/2/2008

I work right down the street from this spot, and i can honestly say that it has become a fav! The crew here was first introduced to the Serving Spoon by the homie, and since then it is the new lunch spot. Amazing breakfast.. and well everything else. I definitely recommend this place. more

Very Disappointed 7/12/2008

I am a southern girl, raised in Alabama and Georgia. So when I read about this place on citysearch, I immediately called up my friend and we met there for breakfast that morning. Looking at the menu, we were both very excited about what was to come. After much deliberation, we chose the catfish filet with pancakes, salmon croquettes with potatoes, and a side of bacon. While waiting for our food, I must agree with previous posts, this place felt like home. The ambience was really chill and the music was nice. However, the food left much to be desired. The catfish was overbreaded with an awful after taste. The salmon croquettes tasted like bread filling. And the potatoes tasted like they were dipped in grease. The only thing that we actually enjoyed was the pancakes and the thick cut bacon. \r Their motto states that there ain't no better breakfast. But I'm sorry to say, that's a lie. more

Examples: Pancakes, Customer service that will never be forgotten. thanks 5/6/2008

This past weekend my family and I was there and we love it. My family came down from Houston and the moment we walked in smiles love and family was there greeting us at the door. We are from the south and we get ready to eat we don't like for people to have an attitude. And i must say you all had just the opposite. If anyone ever ask me were should they go to grab a bite to eat. Please trust me you all are number one in my book. Nikki and the lil dark haired lady that waited on us both times we came in they are as God placed them to be. So I as a USMC family member must tell you all thank you for serving your town. When my husband come home from Iraq, yes we will be back! God Bless Serving Spoon. Pros: Making Smiles out of Frowns Cons: maybe a few more seats wouldn't hurt. more

Best pancakes and grits anywhere 3/4/2008

Great Breakfast the pancakes were like home the service was great I will make this a regular spot keep up the good work. Pros: great food Cons: nothing more

Wow!! I am still drooling from the great food! 8/29/2007

I am new to the area and found this place on here. I read the other great reviews and hoped they would live up to the hype :) I am happy to report that I was more than pleased with my experience! I had a friend in town visiting and she still talks about our great meal there. The service was great! Our waitress Meme was very friendly and made us feel right at home. The owners even came by our table to see how our experience was going! It can't get better than that...wait.....did I mention complimenatry champagne on Sundays??!!! Overall I will definately tell everyone about this place. The food was to die for, the price is right, and the service was not delivered with a fake personality! I have found my new favorite spot to dine!! Pros: Service, Menu variety, and nice tunes to eat to! Cons: Crowded but what do you expect?!! It is worth the short wait! more

Felt like home... 2/12/2007

\r I went with 5 of my friends and everyone was pleased..\r I had the catfish, eggs (only the egg whites, which I thought was nice option to have) and pancakes. \r My other friends who are huge fans of grits and french toast were pleased as well. One of the few places I've found that actually serve edible turkey and chicken sasauge!\r Yum!\r The only two low points were the chicken wings tasted a lil bland (or it was just time to change the oil?) and the parking lot was full....but it's in a shopping center with other businesses on a Sunday after church, so I could understand that...\r \r There was a b-day celebration while I was there, and I got to witness MeMe firsthand shaking her groove thang to Stevie Wonder's ""Happy Birthday""....felt like my momma's house on Sunday morning....only thing missing was the Gladys Knight playing!\r \r Yeah, the wait is long on the weekend, but where isn't there a long wait on the weekends?\r Make reservations....Duh!.. \r Then, BE there for the reservation time. ...(CP time is not honored here).. they WILL give up your table.\r FYI, all the people in your group will need to be there before you get a table.\r \r We had a 20-30 min. wait, but they did take our orders while we waited...I though that was a least a effort to make up for the wait, I appericated it.\r \r No it's not fancy...but it was good food, good service, and good times...\r I will be back....on a weekday when I'm playing hooky from work! more

Great food but wrong element 2/8/2007

Great breakfast spot. I am huge eater of grits and they have some of the best in the city. Long lines on the weekend but if you are alone you can get a seat at the counter. & since I do find the booths to be quite cramped I prefer the counter. Mimi is the best waitress they have so ask for her. \r Only negative is that some people think it's ok to smoke ""other cigarettes"" in the front while waiting for seating. The owner claims they have no control over what happens outside but I disagree. That element brings the place way down!!! Other than that I am always telling someone I know to go there for breakfast. Pros: Great food for the price Cons: small bathrooms & small booths for seating more

Best breakfast in town 10/27/2005

I frequent the Serving Spoon quite a bit, I thoroughly enjoy the food, and the service. The catfish and grits breakfast is the best. And oh my God the pancakes are unbelievable. I have not had a bad dish from there yet. The only downside is the wait on the weekends. The wait is long but well worth it. Pros: good food, good service, meet nice people Cons: long wait, not open long enough, not enough parking more

The Food is Excellent 2/10/2005

I eat at the Serving Spoon all the time. The food is excellent. Because that's what I do. I eat everywhere, (all over the world) I seek out places to eat on all levels. I recommend the restaurant for people who like soulf food and a neighboring feeling. Pros: Inexpensive, Good Service, Friendly Waitresses Cons: Parking, Not Big Enough more

To Eat here? --- I ""Pass"" 2/4/2005

A friend and I ate at this place for breakfast. My friend liked the food (not the service)...I didn't like the food or the service. I PASS the resturant everyday going to and from work. The thought of ever eating at this resturant again...well, I'll KEEP on passing. I live in the area...unlike my friend who lives in Lakewood. Cons: Long wiat, Longer to get served, Not worth the wait more
