smelly mothball central 8/7/2010

Stopped in to have a drink with a friend before meeting up with others. The place was filled w/ octogenarians and smelled like Grandmas house times 1000. Seriously it turned our stomachs and we left after 1 drink. The $8. for a house rum and coke is a bit steep and service was slow even though we were the only ones at the bar. more

The Best of Kansas City 8/19/2008

The Savoy deserves its reputation as one of Kansas City's gems. It has an atmosphere unrivalled at any restaurant I have been to in Kansas City. The 4-H strip is succulent and tender and the lobster tails are absolutely fantastic. The baked potatoes are perfectly cooked and the salads are ice cold--just as they should be. Reservations are recommended--especially if you want one of the few booths in the main dining room--and, my personal recommendation is to ask for Palmer, a waiter who understands how to make your dining experience unforgettable. I have been going to the Savoy personally for over 30 years, so I have many experiences to rate this fine historic restaurant. Pros: Great atmosphere, excellent service, fine food more

Skip the Savoy 6/23/2008

In my first visit to KC I was anxious to experience a steak in the city famous for its steaks. I visited the Savoy Grill... I will NOT be returning. The service was terrible and the steak was even worse. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with elegant lighting, and beautiful artwork. Unfortunately, the positives end there. It took 45 minutes before the server came and took our orders. I ordered a top sirloin steak with a salad and baked potato. Fortunately I enjoyed the company I was with, because it took 1 hour and 45 minutes to bring the food. I think they cooked the steak the entire hour and 45 minutes because it was extremely dry, and the texture was like mush, (I am not talking tender, I am talking mush, as if it had been thoroughly chewed up and spat out), and had little flavor at all. The baked potato was of average size, but also overcooked and very dry. O wouldn't say that I am an expert, but I have eaten a lot of steaks. I would have thought that in a city famous for its steaks, and at that high a price I would have gotten the best meal ever, but in truth, this was the worst steak I have ever had anywhere bar none. I could not finish it, it was so bad. I don't know if I will ever make it back to Kansas City, but I do know that if I do, I will skip the Savoy Grill! Pros: beautiful setting Cons: slow service, terrible food, high prices more

Decent 3/3/2007

We made a reservation, seating was prompt. Service was a little slow but that negative turned into a positive because we were able to enjoy our drinks and talk. The restaurant was nice because you felt like you stepped into 1946 Kansas City. That ambience is not easily created. The food was good but not great. I had a T-bone which at 42 bucks was overpriced, my wife had lobster which was delicious. The service was okay but not fantastic if you drop 150 plus you expect a little better. We enjoyed our night out at the savoy and will return but not immediately. Nice for something a little different but I have gotten more run for my money. Pros: ambience Cons: service a little slow more

Good food & history. 11/18/2006

We really enjoyed our meal here. And our server could not have been nicer. And once she found out how much we enjoyed our visit to The Truman library and house she directed us to the back hallway of the restaurant where there was quite a bit of framed memorabilia. more

So-So 7/1/2006

While the service was great, the staff friendly, the cook must have been having a bad day. The asparagus was over-cooked, the fish bland, the rolls stale. My husband ordered lamb, then forgot what he had ordered because it tasted nothing like lamb. The main dining area was nice, but I think we ate in the servant's quarters. more

One of a kind gem- 100 year old restaurant 6/5/2005

The Savoy Grill has several dining rooms, and corporate chains just can't match the authenticty of this place. It is the real deal. When making reservations, ask to be seated in the Grill room, and ask to be served by one of the regular full-time waiters. The Ceasar salad is prepared tableside and is the best ever- order it in place of the house salad. If you like beef- order the Steak Au Poirve medium rare. if you like fish- get the Shore dinner. You won't regret either choice. Ask your waiter to share some historic facts about the Savoy- and ask for a quick tour of the other dining rooms after dinner. It is just plain hard not to have a great evening at the Savoy. I have entertained groups of up 22 and had intimate dinners for two, and have rarely been disappointed. Pros: Ambiance, Traditional menu, easy free parking more

A new Generation/rude staff 7/28/2004

This used to be a great place to eat. Had been going there for 25+ years. The service has gone soooooo down hill. And this is based on the last 3-4 visits. Took some friends and they will never go back. Our server was so rude to us-nothing like paying over a couple hundred dollars for dinner and having a rude waitress. All the long time waiters are gone and the new ones absolutely have attitudes. Wrote letter to owner and never responded back. Had talked to many others about this and they have the same feedback. I am so disappointed! Pros: great seafood Cons: , customer service, not a priority more

The Savoy 10/6/2003

Great old traditional high-end restaurant in downtown KC. The service was excellent and everything on the extensive menu is perfectly cooked and fresh. The old dining room has the perfect retro look but it's not retro, it's really turn of the century KC and you can feel the history w/o any hokeyness. Though few people have any desire to be in the downtown part of KC, this restaurant is worth the 15 minute trip from the Plaza area and is a welcome contrast to the ""nouveau"" and trendy blandness found there. more

"Old school" is an understatement at this historic hotel restaurant. The towering, colonnaded dining room is piled with dark wood paneling and decked out in turn-of-the-century...
