Best

Saul's is in many ways, and to many in the East Bay of the San\r Francisco Bay area, is ""home away from home."" It is so homey \r and friendly that I once walked out and forgo...

Worst

I've been here countless times, and lately, every time I leave, I wonder why I bothered. The ""hostess"" is almost invariably unpleasant -- sometimes downright hostile. The waitst...

Saul's 5/23/2004

As a native New Yorker I would have to say Saul's is pretty close to as authentic as West Coast Deli's go. It absolutely buries Max's Deli. The real ethnic stuff like the pickles, pastrami, herring, egg creams, and chopped liver, and rye bread was good. Certainly the best deli experience I have had since moving out here 7 years ago. The desserts need some work. Black and Whites, Rugelach, and Cheesecake mediocre at best. Servers need a little more personality. Pros: Overall Food, Menu Selection more

My favorite place for bad service! 1/9/2003

Saul's is one of my favorite places for Brunch or dinner. I tend to doubt myself the last year or so as the service has gone down the toilet. It's never been especially good but this past year it's just horrible. The reubans are the best in Berkeley, (snicker if you will) if not the whole Bay Area. The chicken in a pot is a must have for those sniffly evenings. Other favorites of mine: mega mushroom, fallafel sandwich (which seems to shrink every time I order it) and for breakfast either the Saul's deli platter or the latkes, (available all day long and run from delicious to burnt to a crisp). Don't expect refills on anything. Bring your own artificial sweetener.. It's true what they say about the service not being very attentive. Pros: food, location Cons: service, parking more

Sauls is only so-so 1/4/2003

This place's popularity puzzles me. The food is mediocre. The prices are too high. The service is pretty awful--give up on getting refills on water, receiving the bill within 20 minutes of when you're done. The kitchen tends to screw up orders, and even the hostess can be surly. Yet the place is always packed. It's a mystery. Pros: Cute deli atmosphere., Kosher Menu!, Menu changes monthly Cons: Hard to park/crowded, Lousy food/poor value, Terrible service. more

A nice BERKELEY deli 9/1/2002

So...it's not a New York deli. If you want a New York deli go to/stay in New York! That said: I'm not saying Saul's is perfect, but it's pretty good. I'm especially glad (on my last visit) that they have stopped the outrageous practice of charging for the pickles. I love the chopped liver and the Reuben sandwiches. The chicken soup is tasty, and I'm always in the mood for a cold bowl of Borscht topped with a dollop of sour cream. I'm not crazy about the service. It ranges from okay to atrocious. Pros: lovely chopped liver, tasty soups Cons: inconsistent service more
