I have to beg to differ with the review down below. I went to visit my folks this year and I loved going to the dining room every day! It was like going to a nice restaurant with linens and nice place settings. The food and the portions were terrific. My mom set it up so we could get a tour of the kitchen one afternoon and it is run like a top notch restaurant. \r \r I have to agree with Les, it was a really good food experience every day for a solid week! The people are really nice. In talking with many of the residents over meals, I learned that this place is actually known for having really good food. \r \r I loved seeing the gentlemen in their jackets ""dressing"" for dinner. This mentality does not surprise me, the people I met there have lived upscale most of their lives. The staff is attentive. They know everyone's name and call them by name. This is a really great place to live. I am looking forward to my next visit out west to see my parents! more

A resident's view of dining facilities 10/23/2009

As a nearly four year resident of Santa Catalina Villas, I want to take issue with the review written by “Love4Life” (embarrassed to use his real name?). The salad bar containers are embedded in a bed of ice on the salad bar. They are chilled as well as possible. The mixed greens, which I use, are definitely not wilted. The soups are almost always excellent and served hot. I rarely eat meat and can not comment on its quality. I usually order fish and it is fresh and well prepared. The salmon is exceptional and very popular. Fresh vegetables are used when available. Other vegetables are of necessity frozen. Vegetables are almost always prepared al dente. There have been occasions when vegetables are overcooked. Many residents prefer vegetables that are soft because they are easier to chew. Remember this is a senior community. I can not comment on potatoes because I have never ordered them. Desserts are frequently “made from scratch” in house. In addition to pastries, cakes and cookies, a selection of ice cream flavors are available. Sugar-free desserts and ice cream are always available. Is food consistently prepared to gourmet standards? Of course not, but one person’s excellent rating may not be shared by over 200 residents. It is not possible to consistently satisfy that many people. The menu is varied. I appreciate the food being served with a low sodium content. Pros: A hard working staff dedicated to pleasing residents more

Why bother eating there... 6/21/2009

I visited my aging mother today, Fathers day, and was treated to a luncheon served at 1:30 p.m. It was a horrible experience. The salad bar was tepid at best with wilted iceberg & green leaf lettuces. The condiments were at room temperature, not the normal chilled temperature you would expect from a ""restaurant style"" dinning room. My fillet of beef that I requested medium rare was poorly butchered and was served barely warm and well done. This is the result of being seared in the morning and spending the next few hours in a warming tray or autosham. Limp, overcooked frozen vegetables accompanied this lousy steak along side of a grey mass that was suppose to be Dutchess potatoes. What a rip off. No wonder the #1 complaint of the residences there is the food. The poorly trained cooks should look for another career as they obviously can not cook. I was and still am appalled at the lack of attention to detail. Tomorrow I will call the general manager & the director of food services to let them know how bad their food is... Pros: The only pro I can find is the patrons do not have to drive Cons: Horrible foodservice prepared by idiots. more
