Creative combination plates on the island 5/7/2010

We tried Salsa's for the first time while in Galveston last weekend; one of our many spring jaunts to the island. I opted for the Buena Vista combination which included a shrimp soft taco, shrimp enchilaa with cheese, shrimp tostada, rice, beans, guacamole and sour cream. My plate was absolutely declicious. My fiance tried the Mazatlan combination plate with a chicken enchilada & avocado sauce, beef taco, chicken flauta, rice, beans and guacamole. She loved her plate as well. While I do not usually like hot sauce served warm (strickly believing that hot sauce should be served cold, and the chips served warm), I have to admit that Salsa's hot sauce is extremely tasty. The green sauce was equally fresh and good, and the chips were warm and crispy. We both loved sitting in the enclosed patio at the street-front end of the restaurant, and were not offended when the waitress informed us that the a\c was not working in the patio area. The patio was more than comfortable, with the ceiling fans circulating the air. Both of our plates were served piping hot. My only suggestion would be that they get the hot sauce and chips to the table a little quicker when you first sit down at the table. I think this slight lag was due to our sitting next to two huge family groups which were requiring a lot of attention. If not for this slight hiccup, they'd get five stars. We will definitely be dining at Salsa's again soon. Pros: Excellent menu and variety Cons: Restaurant a little too big; long walk from kitchen to patio more

Great place for bad seafood 10/30/2009

If you absolutely love seafood with a South-of-the-Border flare, don’t come here. God, I wish we’d tried Mixteca instead. I ordered the Shrimp combination plate (comes with a shrimp taco, enchilada, and chalupa). The shrimp had the taste boiled right out of it and was about as al dente as early-morning phlegm. To counter the fact that their shrimp cooking abilities amount to that of a package of ramen noodles, they drowned everything in one sauce or another. The taco’s “sauce” tasted a day or two this side of rancid and the enchilada sauce (cheesy) tasted like an under salted butter roux. I make better enchiladas with leftover chicken fajita meat and Velveeta. To make matters worse, something in the mix twisted my guts up real nice, so I had to skip dinner in a seafood paradise. If you are ever driving down the Seawall with a hunger for Mexican food gnawing your gut and you see Salsa’s, keep on driving. Pros: Great coke! Cons: Horrible shrimp more

Better not cuss in this restaurant 3/12/2009

A Galveston officer was enjoying an early dinner at 4:15 p.m. Monday at Salsa’s Mexican and Seafood Restaurant, 4604 Seawall Blvd., when he overheard a conversation between a man and a woman, said Lt. D.J. Alvarez, a Galveston Police Department spokesman. “The man said to the female, ‘I can’t believe you’re so f------ stupid,’” Alvarez said, who was reading from a police report of the incident made public Tuesday. “‘What the f--- were you thinking?’” “The manager was offended by the curse words,” Alvarez said. “And the man was arrested when the manager came forward to complain about the breach of peace.” Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

True Mexican Tradition 6/3/2004

After two visits at two different times of the year, I feel I have a good overview of this great restaurant. We had prompt service both at lunch and in the evening. You can plan to wait during tourist season if you don't go early. The salsa is fresh as is all their food. The fish tacos are yummy, as are the black bean enchiladas. They have indoor and patio seating, full bar, and friendly staff. We alway have more than enough to eat. Pros: Good value, good parking more
