The first time I purchased a couple of ""pink"" mochis at Sakuraya was in 1970!!!! The elderly owner looked frail even then. But his son has taken over and the recipe is identical. Prices are amazingly low still after decades in business. I live 120 miles South of Gardena now, but still go up once or twice a year when I just HAVE TO HAVE some of those soft, sweet pink pillows!!!! I too buy them en gros and freeze what I cannot eat in one sitting ~ Hahahaaa!!!! Yummy yummy!!!! more

I bring boxes of this stuff to the NW back on the plane. 6/19/2010

I have lived in Japan but the sweets from this place says home to me. I now live in the Pacific NW & the few who make manju here are definitely not up to quality. Besides some of them charge up to $3.50 or more a piece. I don't know how this guy keeps his prices so low. I buy 30 - 50 pieces @ a time & immediately put them in the freezer when I get home as they are made preservative free. When this guy retires, there will no longer be anyone to take over. I will be in deep trouble when this happens... Pros: hole in the wall, artisan Japanese sweets... Cons: sakura mochi, my favorite, is made for 6 weeks in the spring more

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't be deceived, what's inside is fresh, soft soft omanju (Japanese confection made from rice and beans). YUM. more
