Sage Restaurant and Wine Bar is the Shizni 3/6/2007

If you are in Sturgeon Bay and looking for a one of a kind dining experience. The atmosphere is great, the service is excellent and the food is outstanding. The wait staff is very friendly and caters to your every whim. The folks in the kitchen are geniuses. With tasty food, great wine, and dining outside (in summer) it is a must go place located in the heart of good ol' Sturgeon Bay. Pros: Food, Service, Ambience Cons: Parking, sort of expensive-but worth the price more

The Best of the Door 2/8/2006

My husband and I have been coming to Door County for over 10 years and have tried every restaurant. Sage is consistently the best: fresh food, excellent service and a perfect DC atmosphere. Most recently I had the Ahi Tuna (perfect,, with a tangy Asian slaw) and my husband had the Filet Mignon (he said it was exceptional, and he considers himself an expert!). We call ahead and reserve our favorite corner table. We are used to fine dining in larger cities; Sage rivals any four star California or NY restaurant. Pros: romantic, unique, friendly Cons: none more

Romantic, Intimate Spot 9/21/2005

My wife and I visited Sage this past weekend on our first Door County trip, to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. The editorial is correct in saying it presents a Hampton-like experience in one of Door County's quaint mid-western towns. While the food was excellent and well presented, the service was stretched thin, due to a large party consuming the back half of this small restaurant. We were notified beforehand of this party, but they assured me that the party wouldn't require too much of the restaurant's attention. They were wrong. This restuarant is wonderful for small, intimate groups or couples. The overall tone, being that it is a wine bar as well, is not for children. The salmon was very good. We also had a cheese fondue appetizer that would rival any fondue restaurant. A major plus in value would be that a house salad accompanies every meal. Pros: Inexpensive Wine, Wonderful Decor, Intimate Cons: Service, Not "Door County", Overpriced more

  • The Scene
Soothing, sage-green walls, blond wood, and fresh flowers set a relaxing, romantic mood in this comfortably low-lit space, where the crowd is a mix of cozy couples and families out for a special occasion. Abstract art pieces hang on the walls and candles glow softly. Service is friendly and unhurried.

    The Food
The contemporary American menu is creative but disappointingly uneven--especially considering the big-city prices (entrees cost $22-$34). Grilled shrimp and garlic risotto with snap peas sounded intriguing, but the shrimp weren't fresh and the risotto was pasty. Scallops with lime-sesame vinaigrette had little flavor, though accompanying vegetable slaw was vibrant with color and texture. Grouper was the highlight of the meal, rich and meaty and complemented nicely by zesty olive confit. Vanilla crême brûlée was a fine finish--buttery-smooth and topped with berries.
