Unsavory Experience 2/9/2012

I had an awful experience recently at Sabor Latin Bistro in North Bergen, New Jersey and I'd like to share it with the public. I've lived in the area for 11 years, and eaten at Sabor many times, and always thought the food was pretty good. I decided to treat myself to dinner this past Tuesday night Feb. 7, 2012, and ate from their $25 prix fixe menu. I had the salad, salmon and coconut tres leches. Within an hour of returning home I started to feel sick. Within two hours I was throwing up, all night long, until 6:00am. I had food poisoning. When I called Sabor the next day and spoke to the GM, Manny, he was anything but sympathetic. Not once did I receive an ""I'm so sorry that happened! How are you feeling?"" Instead I was give excuses: ""We serve salmon all the time. No one has ever complained of food poisoning!"" I was made to feel like I was lying; why would I make up such a story?? To get...what? A free meal? I'm really not that desperate, Sabor. Manny never took down my number, barely brought himself to ask for my name, and said I needed to call back the next day, after he'd ""spoken to his chef"". So I called today, Thursday Feb. 9th, and got some other manager (I was so mad within 2 minutes of the call I didn't even get his name). He immediately proceeded to spout off the same rhetoric as Manny. Sabor doesn't care about their customers or their community. I will never eat here again, and I urge others to follow suit. If you get sick from their food, it's on you. Because of course it couldn't possibly be the fault of the restaurant who PREPARES the food, right? more

Great Food- Sometimes Small Portions 6/13/2011

My boyfriend and I eat here frequently. The restaurant has a nice ambiance and very, very good food. It all seems pretty authentic. We typically get their grilled tuna and empanada trio (like the reviewer before me!) The tuna is the best I've ever had and there empanadas are so good that I could probably eat them every day for the rest of my life and never get sick of them!! While the portions when you sit in the restaurant are decent, we have also gotten takeout multiple times and they definitely skimp on the tuna entree when we do. It is always much smaller than the portion when you sit there. Maybe they are trying to tell us indirectly not to order to go... In any event, sit there, stay awhile, soak in the cute atmosphere and don't order takeout ;) more

Authentic food and ambience! 8/29/2010

They have a great atmosphere and great food to go with it! We had their grilled tuna and also split their empanada trio, which I can say without fail are the best empanadas I've ever had! We also had for dessert, the creme brûlée trio- sooo good! While they are a bit pricey on their entrees, they are well worth it! more

HORRIBLE SERVICE 2/1/2010

Not accommodating. They changed our reservations on us and were rude to us on the phone. When we got there they made us wait and were nasty. Cons: THE MANAGER HAS A MAJOR ATTITUDE more

Sabor-less! 11/30/2008

Very disappointed!!! After a long day, we were looking forward to a good, latin dinner, with lots of flavor. We were a rather large group and I am happy to say, seating was not a problem. However, the food was not what we expected. The portions were very small and very expensive. My brother in law had the arroz con pollo (rice with chicken). Barely any chicken, and the pieces it had, tasted like just regular boiled chicken. We should've skipped the ceviche...We don't mind paying the price if we are getting a good, quality meal. I do hear the lunch buffet is good. But, dinner, well, terrible experience...I should've gone straight home and had cereal. Too bad Sabor! Pros: fast seating for large group Cons: expensive for bad food more

SABOR, NORTH BERGEN, N.J.-NIGHTCLUB REVIEW: GREAT DANCE MUSIC BUT NO ROOM TO MOVE 8/3/2008

THIS IS A REVIEW OF ""SABOR"" AS A NIGHTCLUB ONLY. A friend and I attended the nightlife at Sabor last night 8/2/08. We did not dine there. There is no dancing music until 11:30 p.m. The parking lot is small and the parking is valet (95% of the parking is at a lot down the street). The club is small; the outside tables looked ok but cramped with people. Inside the club, No Room to Move; the dance floor is small and could not accomodate the number of dancers. The D.J. is placed directly on the floor which, with his equipment, takes up too much space. We were forced to squeeze (body to body) past people all night to get from one place to another. We were told to move our location 4 times; the people were 3-rows deep at the bar trying to get drinks and only two bartenders, who I must say worked like machines to fill everyone's orders. Small, small bar also. It was difficult to find a place to sit . While we like the music, Latino dancing needs space because of the swirls and movement. There was just no space to be had and consequently, we were knocked into and stepped on all night long [and someone spilled his drink on me- typical when there is crowding]. We left early to avoid the anticipated crush trying to get our cars from valet when the whole place emptied out. We feel since they draw a large nightclub/dancing crowd, they really need to expand the size of this club to accomodate the comfort and function of its patrons. One drink, Kaluah & milk was $8., one beer, Corona was $5. We might try it someday for a dinner (if we are already in the area) but will not return for the dancing. Besides, the location is hard to find for out-of-towners and there are three towns listed on the sites, Cliffside Park, North Bergen and Edgewater for this particular club. Will someone please decide in which town you are actually located? Sorry, but if you want to take in the money from the nightclub crowd, you really need to do something to make it more comfortable for them. more

Great Experience! 7/4/2008

My friend and I had chosen this restaurant last night (July 3rd) for dinner. We live locally and had been there many times before in the past for drinks (they have a great night life). The food was excellent (I had the chicken dish and my friend had the salmon dish), and I was very impressed with the presentation of the food. Both of us felt it was the perfect portion - we didnt feel overstuffed or hungry - perfectly comfortable :) We sat outside, which added to the terrific atmosphere. The owner was very friendly, the server was professional and the ""water boys"" were even nice. I will definitely be revisiting Sabor for dinner again... more

Good Cuban Food 8/3/2007

The food at Sabor is good, it's expensive though. The service was ok too. What I'm trying to say is that I wasn't impressed with the staff or the food for the amount of money they charge. They have a good selection of Spanish wines, and the mojitos are lovely. The place turns into a lounge on fridays and saturdays and on thrusdays they have a live salsa band playing easy listening instrumental salsa. Since it can get pretty loud, I would recomend Sabor as a place to go with friends or a date for tapas and drinks when you are in a social mood. Pros: Mojitos, live salsa band on thursdays, Pasteles de Ropa Vieja Cons: Crowded at times, loud, more of a party scene after a certain time. more

Bad Business 12/28/2006

My fiance and I moved to the area about a year or so ago, and found this great, fun, romantic restaurant, that has equally as good food. In fact, we liked it so much, we had been going about twice a month or so since we had found it. We make a reservation everytime, it gets packed by about 8:00, and you'll be waiting if you don't. So, we had family in from out of town for their first trip to visit, since we moved, and had made a reservation for the 5 of us to ""wine and dine"" at Sabor......\r The day of our reservation, at 4:00 in the afternoon, we get a call that they can't seat us! I told them about how often we go, and how much we like the food, and my big, sob story, and they still refused to do anything to get us in! \r So now, I have no reservation, 5 hungry people, and nowhere that can fit us in.....\r The food at Sabor is very good, but after a bad experience on such short notice from them, I will be going elsewhere, they ARE replacable....... Pros: good food and drinks Cons: bad business practice. more

Flavor is what its ALL about! 2/10/2006

The food at Sabor is simply amazing. While the main dining room is on the small side, you won't notice as the Mojitos start coming. (FYI-The mojitos are the best in Bergen and Hudson County. Reservations are a must b/c if not you'll be waiting at the bar forever. We had steak and chicken left over and enjoyed sandwiches the next day. Hubby & I will definitely be back for the Peruvian Chicken & Churrasco. Pros: Mojitos, Great Service, Wicked Food Cons: Parking, Cozy Dining Rom more

Some flavor on River Rd. 5/27/2005

Even on weeknights, the crowd is strong, as this is the most stylish, flavorful spot this side of the Hudson. The decor, the food, the people... EVERYTHING about this place is great (except the microscopic parking lot and the parking attendants' inability to avoid ""tapping"" your car as they park it.) Pros: food, ambiance, price Cons: location, parking more
