Best

Love this place. Went here on a whim to check it out because I live in Venice and the sushi places there are crowded and really, well, not that good. The fish quality is excellent...

Worst

I'm thoroughly disappointed that this place won best in the city; this undermines my confidence in the rest of CS ratings. It is entirely mediocre -- bland ambiance, uninterest...

awesome sushi! 2/15/2009

So I went into Sugarfish today and I must say- the sushi was AWESOME!! I was talking with the table next to me, and I guess they come in all the time and were talking about how they are spoiled with sugarfish sushi and can't eat anywhere else. I could totally agree. The servers were nice, I can't wait to go back next week with my girlfriends. The prices were incredible for the quality you get. I'd easily spend at least double at other sushi places. Big recommendation! Pros: quick service, food, value more

Best Albacore ever!! 2/12/2009

I just tried sugar fish and it was great!!! The albacore was the best I have ever had. Everything was super fresh and excellent. Besides the albacore the tuna sashimi was tasty, the crab roll was great, and the sauce on the halibut was super. Pros: excellent food, great service, friendly people more

Freshest sushi! 10/13/2008

Oh my god I love this place. I go for simple sushi, and go to nozawa when I can get over there. This place gives me the nozawa quality close to home, and the fish and rice are super. Favorites - albacore, yellowtail, salmon eggs and uni. The service was nice too. Improvements - add miso soup please!! This is my new favorite on the west side. Pros: Parking more

SERIOUSLY...WORST SUSHI RESTAURANT OF ALL TIME...AND HERE IS WHY: 9/29/2008

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE THINKING OF GOING HERE. First off, imagine a pinkberry with more seats and brighter lights. that is the ambiance here. its so bright its just scary. you feel like you are in a cafeteria at a hospital...not like you are having an intimate sushi dinner. the service is god awful. but the worst part is YOU DONT GET TO CHOOSE YOUR FOOD!!! I KNOW! ITS INSANE! THIS IS SUSHI FOR PETES SAKE!!! the whole fun of sushi is getting to shoose what you want, WHEN you want. try a little of this...a little of that. NOPE NOT HERE! you have 3 choices of RIDICULOUS, OVERPRICED ""MEALS""!!!! I serisouly couldnt believe it. its not a chefs tasting. its basically 50 pieces of cucumber rolls, and a couple pieces of sushi for $25, $35, and $45 or something. and the more expensive ones basically jsut give you MORE cucumber rolls!! who the hell even eat cucumber rolls and who can eat that many of them!!! if this place didnt look like pinkberry and let you choose what you want, it might be decent, because the 2 frickin pieces of fish i had were pretty good. but i dont want to be told what to eat and i dont eat freaking cucumber rolls...especially not for $25. SAVE YOURSELF AND YOUR MONEY! GO ELSEWHERE!!!! Pros: the 2 pieces of fish i had werent worst quality Cons: ambiance service menu prices ridiculous hitler culture more

Excellent Sushi Cannot Carry Over Soda-Shop Atmosphere 8/19/2008

I have eaten at most of the top sushi places in and around L.A., including Nobu Malibu, Teru, Sushi Roku, and Nozawa's original spot. I appreciate simple, traditional sushi more than most, not being one to hanker for an Alaska roll or California roll with dynamite piled on top. I love the sushi at Nozawa in Studio City, which was some of the freshest, most elegantly prepared sushi I have ever had. Pros: easy mall parking, fresh, excellent sushi, all-included meal price Cons: no atmosphere, very limited menu, did I mention the menu is limited? more

Amazing Fresh Sushi! 7/11/2008

I love Nozawa's sushi, so I have been really excited to try Sugarfish. I finally went last night (I hate going to restaurants that just opened, so I waited a while), and I really enjoyed myself. The decor was definitely different, but fun and hip. It was kind of odd not seeing the sushi chef, which I am used to. But, the sushi was awesome, the rolls melted in your mouth, and I love the iced green tea. Service was awesome, and I really liked the music they played. Overall, I was very pleased, and look forward to going again soon! Pros: Fresh fish, inexpensive, no tipping Cons: No miso soup more

The ""white castles"" of sushi...not kidding 7/7/2008

Walked by this place a few times and it looked ok. Couldn't be more wrong. whoever wrote the previous positive reviews must be the owner's mother or something. This is truly the ""white castles"" of sushi. I typically love chef's choice for my sushi, but this isn't chef's choice, it is just no choice. Every customer gets the same exact thing, only variety is small, medium, large. ie. mass produced, no variety menu. The sushi was noticeably below average, poor quality. The suggestion that they vary the menu depending on what is the best, most fresh sushi is not true (I asked the waitress)...it is basically the same mass produced food every day. I mean I was really shocked at how bad it was. We paid $70 for 2 people which is a rip off. If you are ok with eating low end sushi, you can get it for much less. If you want to pay for real sushi on the west side you should go to hama at windward circle, wabi sabi on abbot kinney...or even chaya on main street (not great, but much better than this horrible sugarfish). Pros: Service good Cons: Terrible mass produced food. Not expensive, but overpriced given low quality more

the best fish in town is finally on the west side 6/30/2008

I have been driving from Santa Monica to Studio City at least once a week to have my ?dose? of Nozawa sushi. So, it goes without saying, I am a huge fan and I didn?t think it was possible that he could reproduce what he does there. I WAS WRONG. I went to Sugarfish on Saturday night. I sincerely walked in very skeptical, but after having the sashimi and then the first two pieces of sushi, I was completely turned around. There are a few differences. On the good: the restaurant it is a pleasant and well-designed environment with very friendly and informative service and, very oddly, the tips are included in the price and they don?t accept any extra; also the price itself it is almost half of what you?d pay in the original location. I don?t know how he does it, but he does. On the bad: the main one, I thought, was doing cut rolls instead of hand rolls, they tasted good, but I still prefer the experience of biting through the seaweed like in studio city; also, even though the night I was there, they were featuring a special menu with giant clams, uni and red snapper, there is not all the variety that you can find in the valley, but overall, somehow, he did it, he is delivering that dreamy experience on the Westside. What a present. My only problem now is, that being so close, I may go often enough that it would become an even more expensive affair. Pros: ambience, service and food more

best westside sushi!!!! 6/29/2008

So I went to Sugarfish this weekend. I had heard about it from a friend. My friend is a huge Nozawa fan. I personally have not been to Nozawa's, but if it is anything like what I ate this weekend I will definitely make the trek to studio city. At the beginning I was a bit disoriented because each of us had to order a ""Trust me."" To try it out we ordered a #1 and #3, which were the smallest and largest options. The fish quality was unbelievable, like I have never experienced before, it was served on warm rice and literally just melted in my mouth. Service was friendly and attentive and i guess the tip is already included in the price along with tax. Unfortunately they don't take reservations, I can see this place getting slammed with long waits. more

Owner Message
  • The SUGARFISH concept is "foodcentric" and "qualitydriven". It's born out of our love and admiration for Chef Nozawa's style of food. It can be boiled down to three simple ideas 1. Like Nozawa, our passion is to provide our guests with the highest quality sushi possible 2. High quality sushi is often considered a "special occasion" food and we want to make simply great sushi something people can enjoy everyday. 3. We want our guests to love our food so much that they want to share ii with their friends and bring them in.
