Excellent Food! 8/15/2009

I love all the Roy's restaurants! We've been to quite a few in different states across the U.S. The food is always excellent (they must hire the best chefs) and the service is outstanding. We were disappointed to learn that this particular restaurant in Kihei will be closed due to hard economic times. I felt bad for the employees there. \r \r However, I must say the outside of this particular Roy's looked more like a bank or a Safeway. The inside was set up like a Country Buffet restaurant. So the atmosphere is nothing like the other Roy restaurants in Oahu, Arizona, etc. I think that lack of elegance contributed to their demise. Pros: Food, Service Cons: Atmosphere more

Great food, weak bartender, sad server 6/6/2008

Ok this is the thing....\r \r The fish I had - the macadamia-encrusted snapper was freakin incredible. One of the, if not THE best piece of fish I've ever had. The food was awesome.\r \r Now for the bad...\r \r The bartender must have been straight out of some low-rent mixology ""school"" because he did not have a very good understanding of proportion. Every drink was either over or under-alcoholed and we are a group of lushes!\r \r The worst part, though, was our server. Food came out wrong, late, staggered.... these things happen. Most of us at the table had, at one time, worked in a restaurant so we all understood that sometimes people screw up orders. What really got us though is that everytime something went wrong she blamed it on some ""new"" person instead of sucking it up and saying sorry she screwed up. That left a bad taste in all our mouths... of course when the fish came that went away. :-) Pros: Great food Cons: Service and drinks are..... meh. more

Menu changes but generally quite good. 2/29/2008

I live nearby and eat at Roy's Kihei location regularly. The menu changes and as a result some of their best dishes aren't always available. I really haven't had a bad meal yet, but I usually ask what's particularly good on any given night. I personally prefer eating at the bar, where Logan, who I pray will never leave, dispenses first class service, excellent menu recommendations and good conversation. The rest of the staff is friendly and attentive as well but he is a definite standout. Well worth a visit. Pros: Great staff. Interesting menu. Food presented well. Cons: Shopping center location. No beach view. more

several things went wrong when my family visited 6/28/2007

My family and I had a terrible experience at Roy?s Kihei on June 27, 2007. It started when the hostess who took our reservation didn?t have us on the books. After being seated and served drinks, I noticed that the outside of my ice tea glass was dirty. The server did not know the specials but instead told us to look on the menu. The server failed to explain which items on the menu were specials. After taking our order, the busser spilled water on the carpets and iced tea on me. The apology sounded condescending and fake because the busser did not make eye contact. While the appetizers and entrees seemed okay, there was nothing that stood out. The ?chocolate souffle? was actually a freshly baked cake served with ice cream. The server had difficulties bringing an espresso at the same time as the desert. Roy?s Kihei did not live up to my expectation of a first class restaurant, but then again there were no tablecloths on the wooden tables. As such I strongly encourage you not to dine at Roy?s Kihei for dinner as I am unlikely to ever return to that restaurant. There are other places on Maui where the overall experience is more pleasant (such as Buzz?s Wharf, Ruth Chris, Kobe, Sansei and Pineapple Grill). I enjoyed my visits to Outback Steakhouse more than I did Roy?s Kihei. Pros: taste of appetizers and entrees Cons: service may have affected my experiences more

Ruined Roy's Fame 12/31/2004

I live next to Roy's New York and a frequent customer. I visited Maui a couple of weeks ago and found that this is the best rated restaurant in Maui, so I decided to pay a visit. Very VERY disappointed. The dishes from standard Roy's menu were ok, but the dishes created by local chef were crying outloud: ""what was he thinking!"" Not to mention the kitchen tried to deceive us by replacing sticky rice with steamed rice because they were out of sticky rice. A professional restaurant would properly inform the customers of such detail, but this place went ahead and slapped on something else, thinking we have no control over it and would just accept the treatment, quietly eat it and get out. Roys New York is far more professional and the quality is beyond its Maui branch. How can this be the best rated restaurant in Maui? Pros: Trendy set, Friendly service Cons: , Unprofessional, Poor management more
