Fabulous Place for a Special Night Out 4/22/2009

I have been to the Roy's in Hawaii and its great to see them in Chicago. This is an excellent spot to take your date and have a lovely meal - start with their Original Hawaiian Martini for your drink, pick the seafood of your choice (everything I have tried is fabulous!) and finish with Roy's Melting Hot Chocolate Soufflé (it takes 20 mins, so its best to pre-order the dessert). Enjoy! Pros: Excellent Food, Best Hot Melting Chocolate Soufflé in Town! Cons: Make Reservations Ahead - their bar area tends to be crowded more

LOVE the molten chocolate cake. You have to order it at the beginning of the meal though bc it takes a bit of time to prepare. Pros: Good service, Good food, Very nice atmosphere Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

FABULOUS! 3/14/2009

One word for Roy's--FABULOUS! I went with a group to celebrate a birthday and every detail was perfect. Every single dish they set on our table was absolutely delicious. The pork ribs, seafood chowder, sirlion, and dim sum were phenomenal 1st courses. I had the calamari, which was a happy explosion my mouth. Butter fish and filet mignon were the star entrees. The filet comes with these horseradish dumplings that were amazing! And the creme brule and chocolate souffle were stellar deserts. Scott was our server and he was delightful, helpful, attentive, and charismatic. He made excellent suggestions to us from drinks to desert. Roy's made a regular customer out of me and I will be back and recommend this place as often as I can. Pros: Food and service more

Top notch - great food and service 10/30/2008

Dined there yesterday for the first time with business associates and a client (about 10 people). Food, wines and service were all first rate. Highly recommended! Pros: Nice ambience, great service, incredible food, very good wines more

A Special Place to Celebrate! 10/20/2008

My wife and I had eaten at the Roy?s on the Big Island and the one in Kauai, so we were anxious to try Chicago's version. We were not disappointed. It was a little piece of paradise right here in the big city. But the decor wasn't necessarily the highlight of our night. Although it was nicely appointed and had a tropical ambiance, the service and food were the high points of this highly recommended experience. Two of the wait staff assisted us, a woman and a man. The woman provided us with insight into the food and the male was the Sommelier of sorts, who knew the nuances of the extensive wine list. We chose a Sangiovese that worked extremely well with all our selections. We began with the Maine lobster dim sum and the brie, ricotta, and wild mushroom ravioli, which we shared. They were both extremely fresh and unbelievably sumptuous, leaving our mouths begging for more, but we had to move on. Next, we shared a mixed baby green salad, the least expensive salad on the menu, but the creamy basil vinaigrette graced the garden fresh greens in a marriage of soft and smooth textures that melted on our tongues. For our entrees, my wife ordered the butterfish, which was an amazing creation bathed in wasabi ginger cilantro cream, and I ate the grouper that was on special, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Both of us ate to our stomachs? and our hearts? content. It was my wife?s birthday, so the accommodating waitress delivered a chocolate surprise that announced the event. Perhaps because it was my wife?s birthday, the evening most extraordinary, but as an added bonus, as we sat down, the servers placed a ribbon across the table wishing her a happy birthday and our menus were inscribed with her name and another birthday greeting. I can?t say enough good things about our experience. This is truly a place for all occasions, but it was a special place for this important day of in our lives. Pros: Ambience, Service, Food, Celebration more

Food and serivice is great 7/11/2008

I have been a regular diner at Roy's for years. In my opinion, whoever claims that the service and seating at Roy's is horrible couldn't be more wrong. The staff and management have always been courteous and obliging. The food is fantastic, and the atmosphere is fun and relaxing. Kind of like what I'd expect if I were actually in a restaurant in Hawaii. If you turn away from this experience because you heard some people say it was awful, you are missing out on exotic flavors and fantastic service. more

A Three Hour Tour . . . . 6/29/2008

You should avoid this restaurant -- the management does not appreciate the service that should be provided at such prices. \r \r Upon arriving for our reservation on a Saturday night, we were given an aweful table in the small area directly beween the hostess station and the kitchen. When our waiter arrived, he took our ""water order"" but no drink order and then promptly disappeared for 20 minutes. I suspect it was his first week of work given that he could barely carry and serve drinks and he always seemed to be at a loss for the right thing to say. \r \r There was a 15 minute lull between each of our courses and drink orders -- which resulted in our being in the restaurant for almost three hours for a three course meal. At no point in the meal were the four people at our table served at the same time. Throughout the meal, either one, two or three of us were always waiting after a drink or dish was served to others. \r \r Perhaps the worst part of the experience was that we were almost brought our check and sent on our way when we had not yet been served the desserts two of our party of four had ordered at the start of the meal! When the first of the two desserts arrived, the waiter decided that the two desserts would be shared by the whole table -- passing out plates and spoons -- without even asking my date if that was okay! Her dessert was a tiny strawberry dish that was barely enough for one -- much less four! Roughly ten minutes after her dessert arrived, he then brought my small chocolae souffle and offered it to everyone at the table as well! \r \r Although the food was good, you should STAY AWAY due to the horrible service and seating. So disappointing for such an expensive and well-known staple of Chicago restaurants. Say ""Aloha"" -- as in ""Goodbye!"" -- to Roy's!!! Pros: Good salad Cons: $12 valet, bad service, bad seating, more

A Taste of Hawaii 1/10/2007

Roy's claims that their fish is flown in daily from Hawaii, and, by the taste of it, I believe them. The restaurant is not very intimate as the tables are quite close, however, it still provides an enjoyable dining experience. The food and service definitely get an A. Pros: Fresh fish Cons: Loud atmosphere more

Memories Of Maui 4/26/2006

My boyfriend and I tried Roy's in Chicago a few weeks ago just to try something new. We did make reservations ahead of time and were seated promptly. The decor is outstanding, and the architecture is beautiful, including the enormous floor to ceiling wine cellar. The pineapple martini is to die for. The macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi was so good and fresh, and it was quite an ample size of fish, the hibachi style salmon which he had was also very good. Now I will say I am not a dessert person at all and had the carmel macadamia nut tart and it was delectible. The chocolate souffle was awesome as well. I was very hapy picking this place, and reccommended to all I know. Pros: fresh fish, ample portions Cons: tables to close more

AWFUL !!! 11/14/2005

Although we'd made reservations, we had to wait 20 minutes. Excellent dishes .. spoiled by the waitress: impolite, rude. + 1 Receptionist sleeping behind the counter, the other chatting !?! I was so sorry to pay 130 for 2. Never again, but we'll try Roy's in NY or Hawai ...cause the experience in Chicago was so bad that it's almost unbelievable. Cons: service/staff more

Deeelicious - luvs it!!!! 8/4/2005

Hats off to the Chef !!!!!!! The food was SPOT ON! Best Resturant EVER! The ribs just fall off the bone and melt in your mouth, best ribs I ever had. Great drinks, appetizers, main course, and deserts. Service was fast and friendly. Decor was impressive including celing to floor glass wall wine celler. The only problem I had from Roy's is that I can not stop craving their chocolate souffle, mmm just writting this makes me want to go get one right now. We had a group of six, Roy's now has six loyal customers for life. Pros: vallet, clean restrooms, clean kitchen Cons: non stop craving more

An excellent dining option in Chicago. 6/27/2005

Having eating at far too many restaurants for business and pleasure I feel I have gotten pretty good and knowing when I've found a gem: and Roy's is one of them. Excellent dining experience with everything being enjoyable. Every bite of every course was great. Very good service too. more

Out of the Ordinary! 2/20/2005

My boyfriend and I dined at Roy's before watching a play in Downtown and it was a great experience. The waiter was attentive and knowledagble of the menu. I definitely recommend couples to go. Food is tasty and has good presentation. It's worth trying out for those who have not went to Roy's. Pros: romantic, quiet more
