Dissapointment 10/11/2007

So on my visit to Rouge for dinner on 10/11/07, after the distasteful over priced food, diner qaulity service my friends and I will not be returning. I don't know about the rest but, I have actually been in France for over a month and I know what real French cuisine is, and Rouge is far from it. The only french that I saw about this establishment was the name's of the plates, the posters, and the name of the restaurant, but not the food. I started with a watercress salad which was mediocre, followed by Scallops for my entree which was awful. If I am paying $22 for my entree I dont expect a dozen scallops but atleast six and not four, and not a tasteless side of string beans. The Scallops were tasteless and had no particualr outstanding flavor. The only plate that was good was the soup of the day which was cream of asparagus. In conclusion, Rouge is over rated, over priced, food is not good, the service was compared to a diner's. Pros: Beautiful decor Cons: Tasteless Food, Over Priced, Poor Service. more

Good food, but its as French as London. 5/30/2007

I respectfully disagree. BECAUSE we're in NYC we CAN expect the food to be pretty darn close to authentic. Make no mistake, the food is NOT bad here. In fact its good, but NOT authentic. I'm sorry but the menu items are all rather well-known French dishes but what actually is served is far from the real deal. For example, a croque monsieur does NOT have tomato or onions in it and does not get cooked in a Black & Decker sandwich press. It is its own unique dish and its not just a ham and cheese sandwich. That said, once I got over the fact that I wasn't getting a croque monsieur, I enjoyed my sandwich. Pros: Good food Cons: Not as advertised more

You people are crazy 12/18/2006

So I read all the reviews and I have to say this: 1. Learn to spell, don't let typos get into your bad review, it ruins your credibility 2. Rouge is a lovely place. The service is nice, not too fast, not too slow and very friendly and helpful 3. When you go to a restaurant in the US, especially NY, you should not expect authentic cuisine. Please, when was the last time they served personal pan pizzas in Italy!? Be realistic in your judgement 4. Don't judge based on one experience. Always try again. Sometimes we get mussles that have too much sand bc it is not really the season for mussles and they must get them how they can. You cannot make them not sandy just by cleaning them. 5. Don't make people think that a restaurant is bad just bc you think the waitstaff didn't like your ethnicity I think that is all and if you are up for a nice, leisurely dinner with good food and great wines, Rouge is a great place. Pros: Ambience, service, food Cons: prices more

Not Manhattan but a Nice experience for Forest Hills 12/13/2006

Not Manhattan but a very nice experience for Forest Hills, this is a lovely French restaurant on restaurant row in forest Hills. Not to crowded which is always a pleasure. My wife and I have eaten here several times most recently on 12/9/06. We are frequent restaurant go'ers in both Queens and Manhattan. The Brunch here is simply the best! Everything is good but the Bloody Mary's are spicy. After you walk in to this softly lit Bistro you are greeted by George the owner who has a magnificent knowledge of wines from around the world. Not sure which wine to order the wait staff or George himself will assist to pair the perfect wine with food. Dinner is always pleasure all the appetizers are wonderful. I strongly recommend the smoked trout or the cheese platter or the Onion Soup. Short Ribs are always a favorite along with the lamb chops or scallops. I recommend stopping in even if you have eaten some where else for desert. Moose is excellent and the crembrulie but my overall favorite is the wine soaked pears. Normally I would never order something like this but here they are the best! They have an excellent assortment of after dinner drinks and coffee. So if your looking for a hard core French restaurant to eat sweet breads or Kidneys this is not it but it is a jewel in the heart of Forest Hills with it's relaxed atmosphere and warm wait staff. Food is well prepared and deserts and cocktails are excellent. I recommend Rouge not only for dinner but for desert or even cocktails after dinner or on a cold day pop in to get a bowl of French onion soup. Bon apatite! Pros: Excellent atmospher, Food & Service Cons: Does not server Hard core French i.e Sweet bread, Kidneys..etc more

Rouge 7/27/2006

Avoid this restaurant. The service is poor and very slow. The food was over-salted and poorly prepared on both visits. The food is really not authentic French cuisine. And the prices, especiallly at the bar, were not worth it. It is never crowded and that should tell a story in itself ! Pros: nothing Cons: slow service, poor taste more

what the hell kind of french food is this? 7/10/2006

The service is SO bad, they take FOREVER and it's NOT busy, which seems like an oxymoront o me. I totally don't even know why people would pay so much money to have such bad tasting French Onion Soup. The bread they put in the soup is hardened, and the restaurant smells of old and stinky fish. The ground is so dusty, they do NOT have clean facilities. The bathroom smells like something DIED in there, and my boyfriend says in the men's room there is urine ALL over the walls and they rarely have soap. The staff takes so long and they often mix up the orders with someone else who is Asian in the restaurant. Personally, as a young Japanese college student they treat Asians and other minorities with no respect. I one time heard two waiters conversing about these African Americans when they were only two tables away. This place is rude, it smells, and the food tastes like it spoiled a week ago. It takes so long for the food to arrive and once it does the waitresses just pop it down and smashes it up in our face. They act as if we OWE them something. The outdoor cafe is better, I admit. But there are lots of rusted stains and whatnot on the chairs. Do yourself a favor... do NOT go there. And also, the prices are SO overpriced it's SO not worth it. Pros: outdoor cafe (only in nice weather) Cons: food, service, dirty facilities more

Are u kidding me -french? 4/22/2006

Worst dinner I ever had - can't believe they call themselves a French restaurant. The mussels appetizer had so much sand I was spitting on it. My husband ordered the classic chicken dish "Coq au vin" - the dish turned out to be 3 drumsticks on top of noodles in a brown/gray gravy sauce. I ordered the seared duck breast - it was an overdone piece of duck (I asked for medium) with an over-fried hash brown that was supposed to be a potato gallete. Please save your money and go somewhere else! more

totally overated 4/16/2005

I would not reccomend this restaurant to any tourists, friends or family. The service is okay. However, the food is not even close to Frech, the filet mignon is ok the best, the escargo was a very sad experience, the french onion soup was what? I don't know. I was very disapointed since I loved French cuisine and there's no good French restauant in Forest Hills. Oh well, I guess I have to go to the city for good French. Pros: Never crowed Cons: food, expensive more

Wondeful Experience 1/9/2005

For my wife's birthday we selected Rouge. It was early, so there was no one there other than the staff -- our extremely courteous waitress offered us any table we wanted. We started our evening with the 'Rouge Wine Flight' -- samples of four wines. We both selected the White, and were very pleased. My wife chose the escargot - which she felt could have been prepared better. I had the traditional French onion soup, which I devoured. My wife loved the lamb accompanied by couscous and asparagus. I thoroughly enjoyed the filet mignon (cooked rare upon our servers excellent recommendation) topped with Foie Gras (which my wife stole) and accompanied by shallot mashed potatoes and string beans. A delicious rich chocolate torte and Coconut flan in a rum sauce, along with a very flavorful coffee ended our evening. The restaurant did get crowded, but our servers attention never diminished. Pros: service, suggestions, food more

Wonderful! 7/20/2004

My bf and I went there last night for dinner; not crowded, which was nice. Bread (on the hard side) and accompanying butter and olives was served immediately. My endive salad with asparagus & goat cheese was delicious; I was unimpressed by the sea scallops, but the side mashed potatoes and string beans were perfect. We had the wine sampler "Flights of Wine" - in red and white. The paper "coaster" underneath the glasses - with the names of the wines - was a nice touch. The waiter took a long time with the bill, though. more
