Reed Gold Mine

Would recommend for age 4 and older. We took our one y.o. and 3 1/2 y.o. To pan for gold, you need to be able to hold a pretty heavy ""pan"" of dirt though our one y.o. thoroughly enjoyed picking up rocks around the panning area. They have an educational tour & video (25 min long) that sounded interesting but too long for our children. Miner hats with lights $10.00. Too cute. Pans of dirt $2.00 a peice. You may want to call before going to make sure there are not any ""events"" going on the day you're planning to go. We showed up at 9:30 and waited 15-20 min for a staff member to get to the panning area. Apparently they had mine ""inspections"" and although there were 5-6 people in the gift shop there was no one else that could help us. Our Grandchildren love to visit the Reed Gold Mine, and also pan for gold. We go each time they visit us from Houston, Texas; Goldsboro, NC; Charlotte, NC and Columbia, SC. Pros: Inexpensive, good parking, Not crowded Cons: Can't think of any!! more
