Poorly run golf course 9/3/2008

After having played this course, I have to agree with a couple of the previous posters. This course is poorly run, overly crowded and not much fun to play. It's obviously poplular but, no one seems to be enjoying the experience. There are many other places in Portland where they appreciate the customer more.\r I'll continue to practice at Tualatin Island Greens and play my rounds most anywhere else. ie. Stone Creek, Chehelem Glenn, Tukwila-OGA and Heron Lakes. Cons: over crowded, lot's of beginners slowing play more

Avoid. Worst managed golf course in the city. 8/22/2008

Extremely slow play, even on week days. I've gone back a few times because it's convienant, hoping it will get better but, it's the same everytime. 5 hour rounds are the norm. Waiting at every hole. And the marshall, who is only there for the free golf won't manage the pace of play. Even worse, I bought a set of clubs there and the salesmen said it would come with two free lessons. When I went to get a lesson, he said, ""Sorry, your time has expired."" I said, ""You sold them to me and you are still here."" He faked a call to the manager. But really most all the sales men in the pro shop are ex used car salesmen; complete rip offs. I much prefer Chehelem Glenn. Good people, great course. Pros: Close in. Cons: Poorly managed. Money hungry with no consideration for golfers. more

Too much $$$ for too little 10/5/2006

They did a good job on upgrading the old Progress Downs, but not enough to justify the increase in cost to play. Have played 4 rounds this summer and each time the greens where consistantly rough due to lack of proper maintenance, not challenge of design. I'd pay the $40 to play if the course was maintaned to a higher standard. more

Nothing, but the ""True"" 11/18/2005

I have a problem with the staff always trying to sale extra balls, but when you have a problem with your club they tell you to call the manufactor. There is duck pow on some greens, and doing the summer time most of the tee times are block by the men's club. over all i would stay the cours is below average, or average at most. On the other had some of the instructors are really good, and the mats and driving range balls are in good shape. Compare to Caplan driving range in beaverton Oregon redtail would be rate an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. Caplans driving range has mats that are not safe, rude staff and all the second hand smoke you will ever need. more

this is and has been a very pretty course, however when they redesigned the greens to make the course a little tougher, they must have hired mickey mouse to build the greens. in all my years as a low handy cap golfer I have never seen such stupid greens, what a shame they ruined this course. I live very close to this course but I will not spend my money to on those greens and I will not recommend it to any of my friends. Pros: pretty, new building coming Cons: stupid greens, to expensive more

Too much $$$ 3/5/2003

I moved back to Portland and was looking forward to playing the new-and-improved Progress Downs course, but was sorely disappointed. The new layout is much better, but not worth the extra money. As always, it was nearly impossible to a tee time, and at nearly $40 to walk, nowhere near worth the money. The play was slow, many fairways had burnt-out spots, and I found myself missing the old course. I'll probably give it another chance, but not anytime soon. Pros: new layout Cons: Pricey, Poorly Maintained, Slow Play more

Replace the maintainance staff 8/8/2002

With the exception of a very poorly designed par 5, the layout is excellent. Unfortunately, they're still maintaining it like it's the old Progress Downs. Expect bumpy, slow greens, burned out areas, overgrown fairways, lots of space that should be marked ground under repair, and a crew that likes to cut holes on the sides of ridges and laugh about it. I played with a course employee who is disgusted with his own course and it's staff, and apologized to me throughout the round for the condition of the course (in July, when it should be it's best). I gave it 4 chances this year, and it was terrible every time. Pros: layout has potential Cons: course upkeep, attitude of staff more

Rip Off 8/6/2002

Are you kidding me? For $40, could you please hire a staff that maintains the course. Greens are usually in hit or miss condition, fairways could be maintained a lot better. I live about 5 miles away from Red Tail and I would rather drive 30 miles to pay less for a better maintained course. If you think that I'm exagerating, please play the course. more

Wow! Difficult and Fun 7/23/2002

The new Redtail (previously Progress Downs) is a great course, though very difficult for the average weekend hack! The course would be improved with a good mowing of the ""hay"" off the fairway...but, other than that I like it! The geese have been greatly reduced with recent changes (a goose guard dog) - which is a relief. Pros: Location & Staff, Good parking, Great restaurant Cons: BitSpendy (39 for 18), Crowded weekends more
