The food & service is off the charts!!! I really enjoyed myself at this place. The hibachi tables are so fun. I also enjoyed the bar for maybe too many saki bombs......

Hats off to Landry's!!! Openly Gay!!! Good for You! 3/24/2012

Hats off to Landry's!!! It isn't often that a company would hire an openly ""Gay"" staff at a child friendly concept. At Red Sushi, our bartender, A.J., and other male servers are gay and proud of it. A.J was delightful. After a few drinks at the bar we were then seated at our table and our server was also gay. Another young man who assisted our server was also gay. I was so surprised that a major company like Landry's would take such a big and ""open"" step. Good for you Landry's. So we were very happy with the service. The food was ok, and the view was ""fabulous""...... more

Worst Service EVER 12/11/2011

We go down to Kemah all the time but have never tried Red because we had heard of the terrible service. However, we went this weekend for my daugher's birthday and since she LOVES sushi and hibachi we thought we'd give it a try. There were 11 of us so automatically the server knew he was getting gratuity regardless of his service. It took forever to just get us drinks. The server rarely checked on us and the chef was by far the least entertaining hibachi chef we have ever had. The food was okay. But the surprise cam with the check wherewe learned that we were charged an extra $6 for splitting a plate (which we were not told and I did not see on the menu anywhere) and we were also charged and additionl $3.95 a person for FRIED RICE. We were not told that it would be extra and were never even asked if we WANTED the fried rice so we assumed it cam with the hibachi meals. When I spoke to the very YOUNG and VERY unconcerned manager he literally just stood there and stared at me with nothing to say. I have NEVER written a review but I have never been treated with such disresoect after we all together paid in excess of $500 for our meals with 4 of us sharing a plate and 4 of the 11 of us being children's plates. Wow. Never will be go there again. I will be calling corporate to complain. more

Kemah's worst place to eat! 4/6/2011

Normally you get bad service here and there when you eat out...expected. This was SO BAD that I had to sign up to write a review! 2 hours to get cold food! Not sushi. Steak. I know it was final four! It was a weekend! But if you can't run your business then CLOSE! Worst service I have ever seen at place! People came, ate, left while we waited! No one comes to your table offers drink or anything! 60 minutes just to get our order taken! Oh and if habachi is full- you have to order of a different limited menu! Food selection by where you are seated! No choice! Who does this? We left without eating- after waisting 2 hours and returned to our neighborhood sushi and hibachi an d had HOT food of our choice eaten within 30 min of our arrival! WOW what a concept. RED Is poorly managed! Poor food! Wait staff or hostess doesn't have clue! Only positive of night was at least the female bartender seemed to have her act together! She might want to consider employment with a place that is going to last! They keep treating customers like we aren't the ones who write their paychecks - they might not have any! Don't waste your money on RED! more

Yummy Chow!!!!! 10/19/2010

We were enjoying some fantastic spaghetti and lasagna at The Terrace Cafe and asked the owner where we could get good seafood. He suggested, Landry's, The Flying Dutchman, or Red Sushi. We spent the whole weekend in Kemah, so we tried all 3. Red Sushi was the best. Decent hibachi and the sushi was ok. I have had better, but it was decent. The hibachi chef was entertaining and the view was good. The service was outstanding! The view at sunset was memorable. more

Fantastic!!! 9/27/2010

I keep getting dragged to sushi place this weekend. I don't know which was better, but I ended up liking them both. As I said in my review of Michiru, ...I don't even like Japanese food , but .....I like it now. Red Sushi was fantastic!!! Great food, ....atmosphere,...service....I felt like I was in Japan. The staff puts in 100% to make you feel at home..... more

Made me so sick! 9/25/2010

This place made me so sick from food poisoning that I thought I was going to die! The food didn't taste good at all and the service was slow but I could deal with that. Being sick in the bathroom for 10 hours straight after eating here- not good! I ordered the egg rolls and a roll with crab and cream cheese, etc. Not sure what it was that made me sick, but it was something. My kids wouldn't touch their food because they thought is was bland. Pretty much a waste of money. more

Going downhill 6/26/2010

Unfortunately, my husband and I used to love Red, but that love is starting to decline. We really enjoy their happy hour, but prices have continues to increase on the menu, and two of our favorite items have been removed. Delicious edamame hummus was taken off the restaurant menu all together (we were told they wanted more ""board-walk friendly"" food, hence it was replaced with a fried calamari), and the dynamite roll (which is amazing) was taken off the happy hour menu. We asked the restaurant why it was taken off, and they explained it was too expensive for happy hour (yet the other specialty rolls on the happy hour menu cost almost $4 more than the dynamite roll on the regular menu- which makes no sense to me!). Regardless, the food is good, but not great, and is a tad overpriced. The service is consistently slow, even if the restaurant is almost entirely empty. It's a nice happy hour stop if you are at the boardwalk, but if you want really good sushi I prefer/recommend Tokyo Bowl (off Bay Area- best sushi I have had in the area, SUPER fresh fish), Sushi Coast (Bay Area near I-45, lots of creative rolls), or Ichibon (next to boardwalk, also has a good happy hour). If you do choose Red I recommend the fried rice, dynamite roll, and crunch specialty roll. Pros: Happy hour, view, menu variety Cons: Slow service, overpriced more

The BEST! 2/26/2010

The sushi is absolutly the best I have ever had. Lived in Cali for many years and this place just blew anything I have ever had away! Pros: Best Sushi! Cons: Nada more

YUM!! 8/27/2009

Wow! What a fantastic restaurant! Went to Kemah for a birthday party last week and picked Red for our event. Didn't know much about the restaurant, just saw a lot of bad reviews. Totally confused by all the reviews! Our experience was great! We had perfect service even though we had a party of 15. All the food was really good. The sushi was fresh and unique. They did everything the way they were supposed to. Definitely a regular now! Give this place a try and ignore the bad reviews! Pros: Food, ambiance, service Cons: Parking! more

Great food and service 8/26/2009

Even though I read the other reviews and had misgivings, my daughter insisted I take her there for her 16th birthday dinner. Well, the experience was unlike anything I expected from the previous reviews. The place was clean, staff was friendly, though young, and the food was excellent. Our chef was very entertaining. We will be back again for special occasions. Interestingly my wife and I had a trip planned for Las Vegas two days later and we ended up passing by the RED in the Golden Nugget. There, all the staff were Asian. Didn't have time to eat there. Bummer. Pros: Close to home, great food Cons: Parking at Kemah more

Food made me very sick and NO sympathy from management 7/26/2009

I have to say I have never had a worse sushi experience ever. I eat sushi about once a week, always trying new places. Not only was the food terrible, overpriced and just over all the worst I have ever had, I got food Poisonin-. , called the manager after I got home and they just said ""Well our product comes in fresh daily, but we will check and see thank you for the call"". Basically the dont care if you get sick off their food or not. I know exactly what Item gave me the illness as my wife and I shared everything, except one roll... the Gary's roll. STAY AWAY from here, you have been warned, and if you get sick they dont care AT ALL. I was VERY polite and didnt say anthing about wanting my money back or anything, but the lack of sympathy or the attitude straight from the manager left a worse taste in my mouth than the food both going down and coming back up. ZERO stars. Pros: No pros AT ALL Cons: Horrible customer service, Overpriced, Terrible sushi more

WHAT A RIP 3/27/2009

WHAT A WASTE OF $. RUDE SERVER, BAD FOOD AND A MANAGER THAT COULD CARE LESS. GO TO KROGERS A 100 TIMES BETTER. TILMAN NEEDS HELP ON THIS ONE. Cons: BAD FOOD BAD SERVICE more

This place just does not get it 2/9/2009

My family went to Red on a very sparse Sunday night about 6:45 pm. Initially there was no host at the entrance and after about a minute, we were greeted by a host/manager who looked no older than most of the waitstaff at some of the other Kemah restaurants. When we said we were here for Hibachi dining, he stated that he would not be doing another seating until 7:00 pm. Somewhat confused by this response, I asked if that was when the cooking began or when we could be seated. He replied rather rudely that all of the Hibachi tables were taken and that was the earliest he could have one available - making no offer to seat us at any one of the 30 open regular tables in the restaurant and then move us. I had already read the other reviews on this site, but wanted to give Red the benefit of the doubt since the service at the Flying Dutchman (whose space this upstart restaurant has usurped) was so great for so many years. Faced with this lousy introduction, my wife and I made the decision to leave the Boardwalk and eat elsewhere that evening. Seems like the reviews here are correct. Cons: Very poor service and no customer focus more

New Year's Eve Disappointment 12/31/2008

My wife and I were happy to see the Kemah area rebounding and on the mend from Hurricane IKE. We go to Kemah at least twice a month for a good restaurant experience primarily the Flying Dutchman. We were excited to be able to go back for the first time since the hurricane. We are a lover of good Sushi and decided to give the Red Sushi a try. more

He Said She Said, Expensive, Small dining area, slow service, poor service 9/7/2008

We went for a special occassion. Will never go back. Too many competitors have this place beat. The place was too small, the waiters all appeared on spaced out and no one seemed to understand the definition of service. It took soooo long for someone to actually take our drink and dinner order we almost got up and left twice. We were hunger for sushi, it was 7:30 PM and we drove all the way to Kemah, which was the only reason we stayed. more

AVOID 9/2/2008

I have been to red sushi a total of three times, the first two were average. Since my boyfriend and i love sushi and share the same birthday we decided to host our birthday dinner here. We called the restaurant a week and a half in advance to reserve our table and the manager insisted that we come by and check out the whole place (we had already been there twice) we decided to go and meet with him one on one because we had around 25-30 people coming. We get there and the manager was nice and can be. the day of our birthday we called to see if there was any parking available for the restaurant and there wasn't. when we made the phone call we stated that we had a reservation and the the lady who anwered acted as if she didn't know what we were talking about but said to come up anyway. We arrived with about 15 of our closest friends with some still expected to show up since we were 15 minutes early. Needless to say our reservation was supposedly lost and there was a 40 minute wait! we booked this a week and a half in advance! It was completly embarrasing, not only was our birthday ruined because we raved about this place but we had 20 of our closest friends waiting around wondering what was going on. I strongly don't recommend this place to anyone. i will never go back again....The service provided by management was horrible......i would recommend raw or if in the area MASA SUSHI there is one in dickinson and one on nasa road one....service is great there and the staff is extremly helpful more

Excellent 9/2/2008

I am seriously amazed that the previous poster had such a terrible experience at Red Sushi. I go there with my wife quite often and we always have a wonderful time and enjoy the food. We eat a lot of sushi and go to many of the other restaraunts in Houston (as well as other cities we visit) and Red is definitely our favorite in Houston. We never have issues with the service, freshness of the sushi or anythng else. Pros: Great Food, Excellent service, Wonderful happy hour value Cons: Kemah boardwalk crowd more

Big let down 8/1/2008

Basically the only thing this restaurant has going for it is the ambiance. I went there yesterday and the service was completely awful; it took us 20 minutes before someone even took or drink order. I love sushi and my favorite sushi restaurant is Tokyo Bowl in Clear Lake and this place can not even compare. The rolls are small and not very good at all. The fish wasn't fresh which is basically the most important when it comes to sushi. The rolls were also set up weird; you had a choice between a hand roll and a cut roll. A cut roll is the normal sushi cut into 5-8 pieces and a hand roll is when they just stuff all the sushi ingredients into a seaweed cone. I got the hand roll because the cut roll was twice as expensive for the same amount of food and it was impossible to eat. I made a huge mess. My boyfriend got a spicy tuna roll and it was basically a teeny amount of tuna wrapped in rice and covered with a spice that was basically tony sachere's. I got this same roll for 3 dollars at HEB! I couldn't believe how much they were charging for such awful sushi. The view was cool because we got a seat right next to the window which overlooks the boardwalk and the water but other than that, I would NOT go back. Pros: View and atmosphere Cons: The food, and service more
