Unfriendly, Rude Owner 7/19/2011

I visited Powder Mill Creamery today after driving a fairly long distance to visit my family who lives in that area.I took the whole family out for ice-cream. The owner asked me to leave his establishment (after we ordered and paid and sat down) because I had a Dunkin Donuts coffee cup with me. Of course, being the ""good businessman"" that he is, he let us spend our money buying his ice-cream first! When he approached our table and told me there was a sign on the door that stated ""no outside food"" permitted, I apologized and promptly put the cup under my chair where nobody could see it, but that didn't satisfy him and he told me to leave with the cup. He did it in an embarrassing manner (upsetting my young son, who has a mental disability, as well as my elderly mother). If the owner had a nicer disposition or friendly manner about him the situation may have ended on a much better note. My local family members were apologetic about his shortsightedness and rudeness. We all agreed that we would not return. As the owner and operator of a store, he should take some lessons in how to fairly treat a customer who has already spent money in his establishment. I don't usually waste my time on mean people, but I see by the other reviews that I am not the first customer of Powder Mill to be made to feel uncomfortable there. Remember when going our for ice-cream used to be a fun family activity? more

Unfriendly to patrons with dogs 7/17/2009

Last night @ 7:30 we decided to go for ice cream and make the 10 mile drive to route 44...we brought our 2 dogs with us. Only anticpating a nice trip and looking forward to my coconut ice cream cone with my husband and 2 WELL BEHAVED, LEASHED dogs, I was disappointed to have had to pass on the experience altogether. As we pulled in and parked the car I noticed that the grassy picnic area by the side of the pond at the ice cream shop was empty...Perfect, I thought...plenty of room and seats available...we'll sit by the pond with the dogs, eat our cones and be on our way...Well...I no sooner took my dogs out of the car and headed to the picnic area when the gray-haired man on the bench chased me down and informed me that under no circumstances were dogs allowed in the picnic area...another woman was also getting out with her dog, a small poodle and she was carrying the dog and he also refused her access to the open picnic area...I decided at that point that I was not going to leave my dogs in the car, nor eat on pavement when a perfectly nice and deserted picnic area awaited so we left the establishment without making a purchase...I just could not justify $10 in ice cream with that kind of unfriendly treatment. As we pulled away the man was apologizing that ""It's not ME, it's a board of health regulation""...REALLY? I can see NO DOGS inside the establishment or even in line to place orders but a large grassy picnic area...What BOH reg is that??? Give me a break! We're not likely to ever patronize that place again... We did travle to route 100 and went to Abby's Creamery where we were pleasantly surprised to see a Classic Car Show at Town Line Farm across the street...Well, that's our new ice cream spot! Pros: Good quality ice cream Cons: Man sits outside and polices the parking lot more

Couples Only 7/17/2008

Powder Mill Creamery serves exceptional ice cream and its servers were tremendous. I would advise any potential customers to hesitate before arriving with a large party. My family met another family earlier today, spent more than $60 on our cones & dishes, and left a deserving tip for our servers. However, the bearded man, I believe to be the owner, seemed anxious about our visit. While we enjoyed our ice cream outside on the picnic tables, the bearded man anxiously peered out the window watching our every move. Our party included a non threatening, sedate group of young children, parents, and elderly grandparents. We enjoyed our family time but I must say the quality of our visit was compromised by the bearded man lurking at us through the shop's windows. Our behavior was consistent with other ice cream enjoying patrons. I'm curious what prompted the bearded man's anxiety. We cleaned up our trash - even the trash that was there before our arrival. As we prepared to leave, the bearded man, perhaps in a bizarre attempt to assert himself, boldly questioned my elderly mother about whether or not we planned to leave a car behind at his shop. We were colletively aghast at the bearded man's interaction with our mother and his unique behavior throughout our visit and his stunning inability to communicate any appreciation for our patronage on this day. I would recommend this ice cream shop based on the quality of its ice cream and service but absolutely caution any person who might consider taking a party of more than ten people. Amazingly, what we hoped to be an enjoyable, benign ice cream social became a stressful event given the behavior of the unpleasant, ungrateful bearded man whom I believe to be the owner. more
