Two Italian Style Brick Fired Oven Pizzeria's In Chicago 12/28/2008

The pizza is really good and give Pizza Doc high marks for quality and taste. On the other hand, the place has zero personality inside and they have been operating successfully for awhile now so there is no excuse for not dressing up the place to be cool or having a warm feeling atmosphere. Also, uninviting looking website too. On the flipside Pizzeria Via Stato aka Osteria Via Stato on 620 N State St. has great service and good presence BUT the pizza was awful and what's the deal with the name that I bet nobody can remember when asked? Pros: Very good Italian style pizza at Pizza Doc Cons: No atmosphere or personality...just kind of dumpy inside more

if you prefer thin crust pizza this is the place to go 6/30/2007

thin crust pizza here is good, the toppings are fresh, you can really taste it. i will come back to try their other pizzas. If you like thin crust pizza i recommend this place. Pros: the place to go for thin crust pizza Cons: none more

Pizza for true pizza lovers 5/14/2007

Pizza DOC is where I go in Chicago when I want a REAL pizza. Deep Dish Pizza should be called Italian Hotdish, not Pizza. People who complain about DOC's pizza's being soupy in the middle or too thin... You people need to stick with your cassaroles and hot dishes. You don't know what awesome pizza is- even while you're shoveling it into your own pieholes! If you have been searching for the best flavor and texture in Chicago- You MUST eat at Pizza DOC. You will LOVE IT too! Pros: Best Pizza in Chicago, great service, great date spot Cons: people who don't understand how perfect this pizza is more

Best pizza I have ever had! 11/21/2006

Wow! Perfect wood fired pizza, great crust, amazing toppings, I would eat it every night if I could get away with it. The restaurant is normally fairly crowded and often has a wait (it could use a bigger bar space to wait at) so I end up ordering takeout but I LOVE the potato & rosemary, boscaiola, ham & mushrooms, bressola, and pretty much every pizza I have ever ordered. Also good salads but there's really only one reason I go here - the best pizza I have ever tasted in the country. Pros: Best pizza, perfect crust, great toppings Cons: Sometimes a wait, somewhat out of the way more

Fantastic! 6/26/2006

Whenever we've been to Pizza D.O.C., they've always been busy...single, couples, families, groups. There's always a happy ""hum"" to the place. All of the staff make us feel welcome and the customer service is unfaillingly excellent. The best wood-fired pizza I've ever had. The rest of their menu looks excellent, but we've never managed to get past the pizza! more

WOW!!! 5/26/2006

This place has to be one of the most authentic italian places in the city. It reminds me if the summer that I spent in Rome. I love eating here. It has to be one of my favorites!!!!! Pros: great staff, good food, authentic Cons: very busy, crowded more

If you want to get kicked out go here.... 8/21/2005

I was dissapointed with my recent visit. I arrived at 6:30 and was told that there was a 1/2 hour wait. This was odd as there were 5-10 open tables. We were seated quickly though. We had our dinner, which was mediocre. The pasta portions were small for the money, and they weren't willing to split my salad . My husband had to ask for a refill 3X before he got one. The worst part of it was that the server came up to ask at the end and said that the hostess was waiting for our table. This was at 7:15. We weren't even there for an hour and there were at least 5 open tables of our size when we left. When I asked the manager she said it was their policy if you didn't have a reservation. It was rude and tacky. Cons: service, management, portion size more

Best Italian Style pizza in the city! 6/7/2005

Modest surroundings, tough parking, a possible long wait, yes--- but here hidden beside a Laurence strip mall is the best true Italian style pizza in the city! Tremendous selection of the freshest ingredients: all imported from Italy--- even the gigantic stone oven used to bake the perfect, smoky crust! There's also pasta, chicken and fish to choose from for the non-pizza oriented. Ignore the rest, esp. the next door Pizza Hut-- they will sonn be forgotton! Go with patience, it's worth the wait! Pros: BEST FOOD!, Selection, Modest Decor Cons: Parking, Long Wait, Location more

Woodfire oven = good 3/14/2005

I can only speak of the pizzas here because, hey, I stick with what I like. These pizzas are the antidote to deep dish heartburn woes. They are light, but flavorful, simple, yet delicious. I have always enjoyed the wine list, and the staff have been excellent with recommendations, even during busy periods. Just expect a wait on weekends. Pros: Wood Fired Oven, Italian Wines Cons: Busy on Weekends more

Great food but Pricey 12/13/2004

Awesome traditional pizzas, but I found $12-14 really steep for a thin pizza for one. The pastas are fantastic....especially the spinach and blue cheese gnocchetti!! Not too overpowering with cheese, it was just enough food. Great date spot as the wait staff is attentive but not overly so. Pros: parking more

Soup at the D.O.C. 10/3/2004

I was expecting a wonderful, thin, crispy type crust and all I got was a disk of pizza soup. All of the toppings were concetrated in the center of the pie, which turned the crust into a soggy pit. Not sure if this was because it was a Saturday night and they rushed the process but not going back just the same. Had a pasta dish in cream sauce as well, which my date and I both concluded as being extremely salty. more

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 5/28/2004

This is the best Pizza place in all of ChicagoLand. The only other area in which to find this Pizza is in italy. A bit north of the city, but well worth the trip. I wouldn't go anywhere else for true Italian style pizza. Pros: Great food!, affordabale, awesome wine list more

Homesick for Rome 4/26/2003

I've spent quite a bit of time in Italy, and this is the closest I've found to authentic Italian pizza anywhere outside of Italy... I was thrilled to find this place. I also have to say here in response to some of the other reviews, Italian pizza is not meant to be crispy... The staff are fantastic, I've been no more than 5 times, and they always recognize me. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone who misses the food they ate when they were in Italy, or just wants to experience a great Italian meal without travelling thousands of miles... Pros: great staff, great food, good atmosphere Cons: no parking, need res. weekends more

Excellent italian food and pizza! 3/11/2003

Be sure to try the chicken dishes and don't miss 2 desserts-the ""croccantino"" and the ""semi-freddo chocolate mousse""-both are incredible. Their thin crust pizza is tasty and very authentic-it is not crispy though, but you won't be dissapointed. Atmosphere is lively and service is friendly and generally efficient, although there can be lulls when it's really busy. We arrived there on a saturday night without reservations but were seated in 20 minutes. Highly recommended. more

Asi asi 3/7/2003

The pizza is only so-so. The crust is not very crisp and could be cooker longer. The center of the pizza is not thick enough and creates an uneven product in which the center is flimsy or doughy. I ordered the pizza twice, along with friends; accordingly, it wasn't just a one time thing. The gnocchi was terrible, and not cooked long enough, nor was it the right consistency. They need to add more salt to their water when they boil it. Pros: Ambiance, Inexpensive Cons: Poor service, Over-rated pizza, Terrible Gnocchi more

This pizza's authentic! 2/13/2003

Having lived in Nice, France and been over the border to Italy numerous times, this is the real thing! Just like ""home"" ... crisp, thin, good sauce and not over burdened with cheese. It's only missing 2 things ... the egg in the middle of the pizza and the hot chile infused olive oil to drizzle over the top. Pros: food, service, ambience Cons: crowded, no parking, limited hours more

the doctor is out 12/5/2002

Pizza D.O.C. is not a place where I would go out of my way for pizza, for several reasons: 1-no parking 2-does not open before 5pm, and close on tue. 3- the pizza is not what the critics clam it to be. I am an old fastion thin crust pizza lover; D.O.C. pizzas are thin, but they do not retain they cristness, they use crumble sasage, and not the treditionallumps of meat. This review is based on a one time review; on 12/4/02. I am going back to my local pizza shop. Pros: good ingredents, promp service, friendly service Cons: lack crispness, no parking more

The best 7/28/2002

I've been at pizza D.O.C. a least 25 times, and I love it, very good, fresh and tasty. I go back in a heart bit. The best in town Pros: like home Cons: to bright more

Going Downhill Fast 5/23/2002

What happened to pizza D.O.C? When it opened, it was probably the best for real Italian pizza-not deep dish monstrosities. But since the change of chef (do they even have a chef anymore?) from the original Fabio-with-dark-hair-looking-guy from Italy, it is just, well, forgettable. We used to drive from downtown for this! Never again! Pros: comfy, unpretentious Cons: pizza failure!, far away more
