WORST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER 11/13/2010

Looking over the other reviews here, it's clear that the service and ambience of Ping Pong are disappointing. The service was especially poor -- the food arrived before drinks, the drinks took forever to arrive, and when they did, they were dilute. The maitre d' explained that there was a poured limit on the cocktail (?) A noisy crowd disturbed the whole dining area -- and other guests joined us in a shouting match. When we brought it to the hostess attention, she said, we don't control our guests, and when expressed disappointment in the food and service, she said, that's just one opinion. I can't imagine this place will be around in two yrs, once the trend setters move on to thenext big thing. more

Food is two stars , nothing to really impress but tasty none the less. Not expensive. Young professional crowd. They have some impressive date wow factor drinks like teas that brew in your glass and expand into flowers. You feel hip being here. Take a date here. more

HORRIBLE 6/24/2010

If there was a zero star, I would give this establishment that rating. Honestly, some of the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant in DC - bad hostess, bad bartenders, exc. I reccomend any other dim sum place than here. more

Delicious Dim Sum 6/22/2010

I came here on a whim on a Friday evening for dinner with a friend. We ordered a variety of items on the menu and I can't say that anything tasted bad. My favorite dish had to have been the duck confit spring rolls, the perfect amount of crispiness with delicious duck inside. Don't forget to try the pickled carrots, crunchy and tangy, but there's really nothing on the menu that isn't tasty. more

unorganized establishment 5/4/2010

Do not ever leave anything there accidentally, they will either steal it or loose it. The GM Christina Stachitas said that women always say they leave expensive purses their all the time which probably means their servers are stealing other people left items.I left my S2000 keys there with my Ducati key on it and they lost them. After my company spent a bunch of money on us to go out to that crappy place they couldn't help me out. The next morning when I called them they said they had my keys. The night manager Eddie admitted to me they had seen them because when I asked him about it he said he remembered seeing my Ducati key with the Honda keys but when I went in to get them they couldn't find them. more

Horrible Service, not bad food, but Not Worth It. 4/13/2010

We went there for lunch and the hostess wanted to seat us at a cramped table in the back when there were empty tables in the nice middle section. We asked to be seated at one of these tables and she kept making faces and discussed it with other staff while we were left standing. Finally, after we asked her again what the problem was in seating us at a free unreserved table, she shrugged and sighed and ungraciously seated us there. It was a few minutes before someone came by to take our order for drinks. It took our server even longer to get us glasses of water. They don't have the traditional dim sum carts, you have to order off the menu. They recommend ordering 3-4 plates per person. We were a party of 3 and ordered about 7 things to start. Steamed dumplings dominate their menu, so we ordered about 5 of those. Half an hour later, we had only been served a plate of 3 little fried shrimp and a plate of 3 chicken puffs. Other tables around us had got all their orders of steamed dumplings and we hadn't even got one small plate. When we finally caught the attention of our server, she tried to rush our orders out. When she eventually brought out our order, it was obvious it had been rushed (even after waiting for more than 30 minutes!!!) Some of the dumplings just hadn't cooked all the way through and stuck to the sheet below. It was unappetizing and we left hungry. It also took forever to get the standard dipping sauces. Why they can't leave some on the table like other asian restaurants is beyond me. They were very stingy with their sauces too and we had to ask for more. The entire experience was beyond ridiculous. Although some of the dishes had good flavors, the abysmal service makes Ping Pong unworthy of your time and money. Pros: decent flavors Cons: No dim sum carts, Terrible service, backed up kitchen more

Modern Twist on Dim Sum Restaurant 3/4/2010

Ping Pong Dim Sum is definitely a must try in the Chinatown neighborhood. Having been the new kid on the block for only a few months their name is definitely spreading around town very quickly. If you are looking for fresh, modern, exotic drinks you cannot go wrong with any of the cocktails on their menu. However, don't spend too much time at the bar, because you won't want to miss out on the savory and sweet food items as well. Their pork puffs and crispy prawn balls are simply delectable. I am already looking forward to my next visit so I can sample some more of their menu choices. Pros: Creative Drinks and Savory Food Cons: $$ more

RIP-OFF, FAKE, and HORRIBLE. 2/28/2010

To call this ""DIM SUM"" is like calling a Toyota a Ferrari. The owner and executive chef needs to reconsider the flavor palette( If you are reading this, please go to a REAL DIM SUM PLACE and reinvent your menu). The ordering menu process is ridiculous. They could have been amazing with the westernization...but missed it by a long shot. Should've call it Ping Bong Failed DIM SUM ISH (no carts). I like their tea and drink selection (not the greatest). However, where is the Chrysanthemum tea?? Where are the CARTS? ADVICE: GO SOMEWHERE ELSE Pros: A bathroom to throw up after Cons: The Food, The Service, The Decor, The Name ""PING PONG"" more

Hostess terrible, food OK 2/23/2010

The annoyed/bored hostess who ignored us (we were the only ones waiting!), forgot to give us menus, and then rolled her eyes when we asked for them was almost enough to turn me off to Ping Pong. The food is good - my faves are the pork buns and the asparagus. Other commenters have it right, most of the food does run a bit bland. Recommendation: Hire new hostess, spice up the food! more

Poor service will leave a bad taste in your mouth 1/27/2010

Bad service extended from the hostess to the bar to the table. The hostess literally scoffed at us when we asked if it would be possible to get a table for 8 people (even though the restaurant was completely empty), rather than politely asking us to wait while she checked. At the table we had to ask multiple times for water, and never managed to get enough glasses for everyone who wanted it. The cocktails were creative, but be forewarned happy hour pricing applies only at the bar. The Lychee and Rosewater martini was too sweet for my taste. Of the 4 items I ordered only 2: the vegetable puffs and the char sui bun were worth ordering again. more

Not perfect, but often good 1/18/2010

I've been to Ping Pong three or four times now, and I've already got an established list of favorites: the shrimp and citrus salad, the chicken and black pepper spring rolls, the lemon chicken, the pork (or the vegetable) puffs. It's best to try it first with a crowd that likes to share, to find out what you most enjoy. That's how I learned that the other spring rolls, the cilantro dumplings, and the prawn balls would never be my favorites. (Tom is right on about those prawn balls.) It gets too expensive for an everyday place, but it's a nice--and very different--option near my office. more

Great group dining experience 1/12/2010

I totally disagree with Tom...took 9 out of town guests attending a local conference to Ping Pong. Drinks were great and the wide variety of food we ordered was delicious. Atmosphere/ambience was contemporary, inviting and comfortable. Definitely will go back. Check it out! more

Finally, London's cool dim sum arrives 1/12/2010

Sorry to disagree with Tom, but I love Ping Pong. I've been going to their restaurants in London for years when visiting friends and was elated at the news of their opening. My one visit to the DC branch did not disappoint. Excellent cocktails with creative mixes, and the dim sum was wonderful -- especially the steamed rice packets. Also really like the round tables for 8. Great for groups. We went days after opening, so the service was hit or miss -- I'll assume that's been ironed out. We will definitely be back. more

Quintessential Dim Sum Finally Arrives in DC 1/12/2010

After ages of looking for a dim sum spot in DC that serves more than mealy, doughy pork-only dumplings or fried vegetable dumplings, I'm excited that Ping Pong has arrived. There's a sizable variety of seafood dumplings for those of us who avoid swine, and all the dumplings are encased in a dough thin enough to highlight the fillings, not the casing. I avoided the Thai and Korean dishes that Tom picked, and went for classic dim sum dishes, all of which were delightful. I also had the asparagus, which was delightfully crispy on the outside and crunchy on the inside. As a veteran of English boarding school fare, I can assure readers that Ping Pong serves nothing like the bland, greasy food I grew up eating. Try the Kumquat mojito - delish! more
