very disappointing 1/13/2008

This is the first time I've rated a restaurant. The good reviews were what led me to try this restaurant....and I was very disappointed. The crab cakes were very dry and tasteless with the consistency of sawdust. The fried green tomatoes were also very dry. Both appetizers came with the same orange sauce-not tasty. We ordered two specials which did not have prices listed and were significantly more expensive than most things on the menu. I had the basa (fish) which was served in a very unappetizing manner. The taste and consistency were off. Both the fish and the elk (which my husband ordered) were served on a huge mound of squash...orange again. It was a strange accompaniment for fish. The service was spotty and there was a party of about 20 children (young) in the back. Overall, a bad choice. I don't understand the good reviews I've read, Cons: food more

Wine Tastings on Thursdays Are a Must 11/15/2007

A couple of weeks ago my friends and I were passing by on our way to a bar when we saw a sign for wine tastings on Thursdays. We were intrigued so we went inside. The bar was full but the manager was kind enough to come over and seat us at a table. The wines were amazing and the hors d'oeuvres were perfectly paired! We had so much fun that we stayed all night and I have been back three times since! Each time I go the food is consistently good and the staff is so welcoming. Pros: atmosphere, people, pretty much everything Cons: i'm addicted... more

Awesome chocolate pancakes! 11/13/2007

We stumbled upon this spot when we were looking for a place to have brunch. It is very cute/quaint and would make a good date spot. The menu was not bad for brunch/lunch... after I saw the chocolate chip pancakes, I knew what would be going into my tummy that very second. The pancakes were huge and were very rich due to the milk chocolate.. what other would you want them anyway? Besides the space being just a bit tight, that's all I can say about this great lunch spot! Pros: Great chocolate-chip pancakes, cute atmosphere, reasonable price Cons: Not much contrast in the menu, space a bit tight (well, it is NY) more

16.99 Goes Far 11/1/2007

As much as I don't want to devulge my brunch pick, I've picked up plenty of cues from Citysearch so have decided to share. The cocktail brunch is a great bargin at 16.99. Cocktails sometimes have a little bit of a bark and bite to them....guess it depends on who is mixing that day but, the breakfast is delicious. If you're an eggs benedict fan, you've got to try it here. more

Charming, undiscovered neighborhood gem 9/6/2007

My girlfriend and I ate here Labor Day weekend. We sat outside and enjoyed the people-watching at the excellent West Village location. I had the artichoke heart stuffed chicken breast. The food was very reasonably priced, and was across the board delicious. Pros: Location, food, prices, wine list more

Great food, wonderful location, friendly service 9/6/2007

My boyfriend and I went to Philip Marie for dinner on Sunday night. I had the crab cakes and the lobster ravioli. He had the parsley salad and chicken stuffed with artichoke. The crab cakes were incredibly moist and came with a delicious chunky tomato salsa. My lobster ravioli was very good as well, especially the tomato cream sauce. I had a bit of my boyfriend's chicken and plan to order it the next time we go. Pros: Friendly waitress, outdoor seating, great W. Village location Cons: Long wait for our bill more

Great Brunch 8/3/2007

I went there with some friends from out of town and had an amazing brunch. The food was well seasoned but not over the top and the place was relaxed. If lunch and dinner are like brunch I will be back for more. more

Nice staff and even better food. 4/17/2007

Wow! My date and I went to Philip Marie on saturday night for a birthday celebration. The server came over soon after we were sat for our drink order. Not but a couple of minutes later the drinks were at our table. rest This was a prelude of the rest of the night. The server was so nice and easy going. The food was reasonably priced (for the village) and tasted amazing. They had a pretty good wine and drink selection as well. But what really made our night was how polite the staff was for us. What a great birthday dinner at a tried and true west village neighborhood spot. Good food, good prices, nice staff, without the stuffiness. Pros: service, food, atmosphere Cons: little loud at times more

It's worth it to do the private table at least once 11/19/2006

It was my fiance's b-day and I wanted to go all out. I knew he wanted to take me here so I decided to surprise him. Their wine room was booked for the evening but the manager decided to allow us to have the tasting room. It was GORGEOUS and very romantic. 5 courses, 5 wines. You have your own kitchen and create the menu. Pros: Romantic, excellent service Cons: Misleading about prices more

Great Food! Great Service! 11/2/2006

From the moment I walked in the door I felt right at home. The warm and sincere reception that I recieved from the hostess was maintained by the staff during my entire visit. I opted to sit at the bar since I was by myself and ended up having a great time with the attentive bartender and staff. Everyone was knowledgable and gave thier recommendations for both food and wine. Everything I had was excellant. The food was delicious, well proportioned and served timely. I ended up staying much later than I had planned. I would highly recommend Philip Marie. It was so refreshing to have dinner in such a elegant but casual atmosphere where both the food and service were top notch but the prices were extremely reasonably. Pros: ambience, service, food more

Never Again 11/1/2006

After hearing some friends rave about the great food and moderate prices, my husband and I could not resist. Sadly we were so extremely disappointed. The restaurant was not all it was cracked up to be in fact I would venture to say that it was nothing short of a glorified diner. The silver wear was not clean, and there was an overpowering stench coming from an undetermined place. The food was defiantly unremarkable. I would NOT recommend eating at this establishment in the future, and I am shocked to hear that it has been open for quite a few years who let that one slip?! Diners be ware. Pros: thumbs down Cons: we will never recomend this place EVER more

Philip Marie 10/28/2006

Amazing atmosphere and featuring incredible tastes and attention to detail. I always have great service and fine cusine. In addition to the fabulous menu, there are always innovative specials making it so hard to decide what to select. Pros: Food, atmosphere, service more

Jazz brunch, very new york 10/25/2006

I dont know what that person was talking about. Maybe she or he was having a bad day. I LOVE the brunch, its great food, affordable and i think the jazz band was fantastic. Where else can you get sweet potato pancakes?!?!?! Its a bit crowded, but welcome to NYC BRUNCH!!!!! I say go there and find out for yourself. My wife and I simply love it!! Pros: affordable and cozy Cons: a little crowded more

Why why WHY is this place recommended for brunch?! Or for anything? 10/24/2006

I specifically made a reservation here for brunch because Citysearch recommended it as one of the 10 best (!?) brunch spots. I will never trust a Citysearch recommendation again, because this place offered an utterly mediocre brunch. Not even mediocre, but just plain BAD. The quality of food was identical to what I would get at my local diner, and the presentation was just as unlovely. The service was poor. My blueberry pancakes tasted like baking powder, my friend's scrambled eggs looked as if they were just scraped off a cafeteria grill and slid onto her plate, the waitress forgot our orange juice and maple syrup and had to be reminded to go get them. I can't believe I actually went out of my way to go to brunch here, and I was actually embarrassed that I had offered to treat my friend to brunch and THIS was what I treated her to. I am convinced that this restaurant has enlisted friends of the owners to concoct positive reviews for Citysearch in order to bring in business---which wouldn't even be such a bad thing if the food and service lived up in any way to the ""hype."" Don't be fooled by the jazz band either--although I enjoyed the music, the restaurant is rather too small for a loud jazz band, and it hardly makes up for the utterly lackluster food and service. Pros: The Maitre D', the jazz band Cons: The Food, the Service, the tight space more

A great spot for a date 9/9/2006

What an adorable restaurant. For those of you who don't enjoy the cozy ambience of a 200 seat dining room, Philip Marie offers an intimate setting which, in my humble opinion, serves as the perfect spot for a date. The food and wine were superb, with service to match. If you are looking for a romantic, cozy restaurant with great food and stellar service, you have to give this place a serious look. more

smelly sidewalk, sweet servers 8/30/2006

I was a bit suckered by the fabulous reviews...thinking this was a well kept secret. Living in Ct and traveling to the city work and fun.....always want to try something new. To spite my less than glowing review (food quite nice if a little boring, very stinky sidewalk aroma, wobbly table, bad champagne...nothing really remarkable) I understand WHY new yorkers would love this place. It is low key, food is homestylish & it is affordable. I admit, I was looking for a little more excitement...but the kind hostess & waiter sent us down the street to EO, and the evening was finished with the scene and energy we crave in NY. I give it a 7. more

Incredible food at incredible price 8/29/2006

My friend and I went here after she ran the half marathon last weekend and we were starving. The food was served quickly and it was DELICIOUS!! The brunch menu was fantastic, and the mimosa (sat.) and bloody mary (sun.) brunch specials are an incredible bargain. I can't believe the prices are so reasonable for such fantastic food. The jazz music was the perfect touch for relaxing and you can rarely find such a charming and spacious area in the city - for once I didn't feel like I was slammed up against another person next to me. The manager was very helpful and came to check on our meals, and they have great weekly specials. Looking forward to my next visit! Pros: great price, delicious food Cons: waitress was flaky but nice more

one of our favorite restaurants in the city 8/17/2006

My husband and I foudn Philip Marie in the fall of 1999. For lunch we shared a sandwich and salad, with an amazing hazelnut chocolate cake (don't think they serve this anymore). Perfect. We returned for dinner a few weeks later and we continue to eat there as often as possible. The private room for 2 was our anniversary present to ourselves after the birth of our son. AMAZING!!! The service and food and wine pairings were amazing. Brunch is also fabulous. Kids are easily accomodated too. Pros: the changing specials menu (my husband loves the game entrees) more
