Best

I've never tried Persian food but heard great things so we decided to try it and I'm glad we did. Pros: Great food, selection, service and atmosphere

Worst

I'm half Persian, and my grandmother was a fabulous cook. The menu didn't impress me as overly authentic. When I asked the waiter if they had chelo (melt-in-your-mouth steamed, bu...

wonderful tasty food 7/2/2008

I love this restaurant and especially its appetizers ? ALL OF THEM. If you go make sure you order the appetizer sampler, and ask for the Baba simply delicious. My only preservation is that I noticed that the quality and the quantity of the food are going gradually down. I hope they bring it back to what it used to be. Pros: delicious food, appetizers, rice Cons: quality and quantity are changing, using cheaper ingredients perhaps. more

The worst Kabab 12/27/2007

I am realy sad to write this review on a Persian restaurant, since I have respect to all my countrymen who I know are struggling in the U.S. to deliver the best service possible. We tried Kabab Koobideh, and two different kinds of Kabab Barg, but all three of those where uncooked and dry. My wife believed that she could still taste the raw meat in her Koobideh. Pros: Doogh Cons: everything more

Taste like HorseShit? 12/27/2007

It was my first time in the New York area and my family and i decided to dig in to some mouthwatering persian cuisine. Due to the lack of any recommendations we decided to eat at persepolis. Although the dough (yogurt drink) was great, everything else was terrible. The kabob, including their Filet Mignon was horrible. I would not recommend this for anyone who is familiar with the persian cuisine. Our final bill came out to be about 80 bucks.... a very harsh consequence after eating this disgusting food. I am still recovering from the noncooked, unmarinated kabob. Its in every burp, every gas i pass, every breath. I cannot wait till i recover from this terrible decision. Stay away. Make your own persian food, do not go here! Pros: Yogurt Drink, Friendly Service Cons: Everything ELSE! more

Great food and mojitos! 11/17/2007

We got there early enough on a Friday night (7ish) to score seating for two w/o a reservation. However, it started quickly filling up after that until the restaurant was full, so I would say you should make a reservation just in case. Pros: Great chicken stew and pomegrante mojito Cons: Not that warm inside more

Fine Persian Food 7/2/2007

Persepolis is a good local Persian restaurant and I enjoy eating there. The food tastes fine and the service is always friendly and welcoming. The cornish hen tastes really good with the cherry rice. I also recommend the barley soup. The decor is a lot sleaker since they changed locations. But in the end, it is nothing more than a solid neighborhood Persian restaurant. If you are around I recommend checking it out, but it doesn't merit a huge schlep. Pros: Good Persian Food, Friendly Service, Reasonable Prices, OK Decor Cons: Nothing Out of the Ordinary more

Make sure you get your change! 4/16/2007

I'm half Persian, and my grandmother was a fabulous cook. The menu didn't impress me as overly authentic. When I asked the waiter if they had chelo (melt-in-your-mouth steamed, buttery rice) he didn't know what I was talking about. Persians are known for their hospitality, but the vibe I got was watchful and superior. On top of that, the waiter was patently reluctant to bring our change (did he think we'd forget and he'd get a $20 tip?). If you're looking for great Persian cuisine and a welcoming, authentic experience, go elsewhere. more

Absolutely delicious! Will definitely be back 1/21/2007

Most outstanding Persian cuisine 10/15/2006

I am a hardcore fan of Persian cuisine. I was raised on it. I have tried every major Persian restaurant in LA and NY. Persepolis is by far the most consistently excellent Persian restaurant I have found. It is perfection. The food is high quality, generously portioned, authentic, healthily prepared. The service is impeccable. The best doogh I have ever tasted. Delicious barg, koobideh, joojeh kabob, shirazi salad. It's rare to actually crave a specific restaurant's food, but their food will do that to you. more

Would have to find a good excuse not to go back 10/8/2006

I try not to go to the same place twice in NYC - but I would really have to struggle not to go back there right away. Pros: everything Cons: slightly cramped, but that's standard in NYC more

One of my FAVORITE places to eat in NYC! 10/27/2005

I eat out a lot! I come to Persepolis at least once a month and everytime I come, the food, service, ambience, drinks...everything is absolutely amazing. The owner and maitre 'd are extremely gracious and I love the fact that they remember what I drink! The servers take such excellent care of my parties and never stick their noses in at inappropriate moments. I love that they are so well-mannered. The food...honestly the kubideh is some of the best meat I've ever had the pleasure of putting in my mouth. And the sour cherry rice? Brilliant. I can honestly say that the weight I've put on has been solely due to eating at this beautiful restaurant. It really is one of my favorite places to eat in this whole city! Pros: Excellent food, Reasonably priced, Excellent service Cons: N/A more

Dinner Last Night 10/13/2005

Went their for dinner last night with my girlfriend. We got a nice bottle of Pinot Blanc $35. I would suggest ordering their appetizer sampler (for 2 or 4)Gives you two types of their exotic flavor rich salads (almost like relishes)and items like taboli, humus etc.. etc. The appetizers were all so rich in flavor. I was alittle disappointed in the entrees. My girlfriend got the saffron chicken kabob. Some of the pieces were dry. I had this aged beef kabob. It just wasn't as flavorful as I would imagine. Don't go here expecting a rich sauce. Its kabobs and rice here. They offer four different types of rice. We both got Dill rice. it was fine. They did give us some free baklava at the end of our meal. So that was nice of them. Service was excellent thoughout the night Pros: Appetizers, Price, Service Cons: alittle bland more

fabulous 8/24/2005

As soon as the food comes, there is a 10 minute silence at each table. I've never seen this at any other restaurant. Everything is delicious, the rice is drier than I'm used to but perfectly flavored. The lamb is incredibly prepared. And the desserts, especially the rose ice cream, are out of this world. The only failing was the persian tea, that I'm used to being sweetened with honey. The service is also great, they stayed open until my friend and I finished our meal, and, on another visit, took our tourist friends' bags into coat check. during the meal. Pros: delicious food, attentive service, not too crowded Cons: tea isn't great more

Authentic Kebobs 8/15/2005

Being from Persian descent this restaurants has one of the best kebobs I have ever eten. Unfortunately, the rice served is not the best example of Basmati rice. more

The real deal 1/5/2005

Ate a lot of Persian food growing up and this place nailed a lot of the staples. Service was extremely friendly and knowledgable, the bussers, runner, everyone eager to please but not obtrusively so. I would also stress the importance of trying their desserts (always a weak spot of Iranian cuisine I've encountered), they're imaginative and delicious. The prices are fair for the quality of the ingredients and the generous portions. Pros: rich flavors, drink list, service more

goooood! 7/3/2003

I have to say that i'm italian and (of course) always skeptical about foreign food, especially when they combine sour cherries and rice. But a good soul is always ready for good food and that's how they make me feel, a good soul. Make sure you try the frozen vodka and eggplant appetizer. You're sure to start in the right direction for a fabulous meal that will make you feel like a sultan. more

Try Harder 5/6/2003

The only reason I settle for it from time to time is there isn't a great Persian restaurant anywhere in the city. The food is tired and seems to be recovering from a hangover. Decent service, okay space, but in a city with so little competition, I think Persepolis has resigned to dishing out minimal effort. Pros: filling, warm Cons: low value, not authentic more

Not ""All That"" 1/2/2003

While I have to agree, the Sour Cherry Rice was utterly delicious, everything else was just ""ok."" In fact, the plates were basically loaded with rice, and very little meat or vegetables. I can make rice at home and eat just that for an 1/8 of the price... Service was also so-so - took an hour for the waiter to refill our water after we asked at least 5 times! The ambience was blah - the tables might as well have been communal. If you've never had Persian food, it's an experience. If you can live without it - do. Pros: Good Rice, Interesting menu Cons: Pricey, Slow Service, So-So Food more

nice rice! 12/22/2002

I love this place. Food is always yummy, and the sour cherry rice makes my mouth water just thinking about it! Reasonably priced too. Really a find. Pros: food, price, service Cons: tight tables more

Great Persian Food in New York City! 9/25/2002

Located in the 74th-75th Streets restaurant row, this Persian restaurant is a good place the try out the exotic Middle Eastern cooking. Menu is full of marinated meats to exotic rice. The food is simple and very tasty. You can't go wrong with this place. I believe the owner used to be goal keeper for a soccer team in Iran. He has his team picture up on the wall. One of the best Middle Eastern restaurants in the city. Pros: Tasty Food, Good Service more

Best Kept Secret 8/16/2002

This restaurant makes some of the best middle eastern food I've tasted. Everything is great but if you're a first-timer you must try the sour cherry rice. I am not a meat eater but I can't resist their chopped meat kebabs. Wonderful service, not too long a wait for tables, price is right - in a word, go! Pros: Great Food more
