Pender's Antiques-Refinishing

I have filed three complaints with the Better Business Bureau against Pender Antiques: 1. Sales Presentation did not disclose complete pricing information - Pender Antiques did not provide a complete estimate, and the additional estimate/invoice was almost 71% increase of the original estimate. 2. Improper Collection Practices - Pender Antiques threatened to “remove half of [my] windows if complete payment is not made” and yelled at me for asking about a payment plan. Bullying the customer. The bill was given to me the day before this incident, and Pender Antiques was asked 3 times for an estimate on the additional work. 3. Contract Issue - Business had incomplete estimates as invoices with no terms and conditions. Verbal verifications were nebulous. There is no question as to the quality of the work that was done or the skills of Pender’s employees. They did a very good job of matching the existing stain and the new windows blend in nicely. The issue is with the business practices, threats and inability to at the very least ballpark an estimate. If I had received this information even after the first day of staining I would have been able to better prepare for the final amount. Despite the threats, I have made complete payment since the work overall was not in question, and I could not afford any legal support in this matter. I am posting this to alert any new customer of Pender Antiques to expect this negative behavior if the estimate is not complete and any question is raised about payment. Do not trust Pender Antiques, and if anything seems outside of the initial estimate, stop work until the questions or issues are resolved in writing. more

David is very down to earth and does a professional job on everything. He is the only one that we take our antiques to when they are in need of professional restoration. Outstanding service! I took a piece of furniture in for repair. It was finished when promised and for the price that was estimated. Had one small issue. David addressed it personally and resolved it immediately. I could not be happier with the work that he did or the service he and his staff provided. David Pender is world class when it comes to refinishing antiques! David repaired an 1800's era table for me that had a broken leg. When he was finished you couldn't tell the leg had ever been broken! Thanks for a Great Job! I 'd highly recommend Pender's for all your refinishing and restoration needs! more

My antiques have never looked better! Seeing my chairs after David Pender worked his magic was incredible! My antique dining room chairs had been in a smoke filled environment for decades so you can imagine how disgusting they were even after attempting to clean them myself, and the caning was falling apart as well, so David Pender was able to make them shine again! The skillful caning work is not only a joy to look at, but they are sure to last many more years despite the daily use they receive. Well worth the cost! more

Deep scratches on an armoire that David Pender, the owner, claimed to have fixed looked as if a two-year old put playdoh on it, and a new armoire backing was applied with the electronic cords screwed down. His assistant, who admitted the work looked really bad, had come to my house twice to attempt to fix the poorly-done repairs after the furniture was delivered and it STILL is not complete. After numerous phone calls and discussions with an office assistant over a two week period about the poorly done and unfinished work, David finally called. I was yelled at, called a liar and eventually hung up on during two different conversations. Unless you are prepared to receive child-like craftsmanship and disrespectful treatment from the owner, I do not recommend Pender's Antiques, not even for my worst enemy. David Pender is wonderful to work with. He has fixed antique chairs that I thought were unfixable. He restored a bookcase that seemed destined for the dump and it is absolutely beautiful. He is fair with his pricing and is available to pick up and deliver items if you need that service. I recommend him and his shop to anyone who has antiques and needs them to be fixed, refinished or reupholstered. They do really outstanding work!! Pros: Easy to work with, prices as quoted and lots of experience with antiques Cons: They do quality work but it takes time, so be patient. more
