U want healthy food? 5/19/2009

The food here is great! It is the closest to authentic malaysian hawker food you will find in LA. I lived in penang for many years of my life and after moving to california was on a search for authentic malaysian food. Yes its not a 5 star restaurant...but the prices are great and the service is great. And if you want healthy non oily curry then make it your self! If your main concern is healthy food then go eat a carrot. more

Interesting Malaysian find 2/25/2009

We went there with a colleague who is Malaysian. My husband and I are super spicy junkies..in fact the spicier the better is our motto! I thought they could do a bit more in the customer service dept. OUr friend's wife had to get up to grab her own plate, the waitress was nowhere to be found. Pros: Ample parking Cons: Closes at 9pm on a Sat. nite more

Unhealthy (oily) food 4/13/2008

I drove about 130 miles (in both directions) to go eat some Malaysian food. We were a regular at the Kaula Lampur Malaysian restaurant in Pasadena which served GREAT Malaysian food in a rather healthier manner. Unfortunately the restaurant has shut down (what a bummer!!!). Penang serves VERY oily food at a cheap price. Eventhough the food is prepared in a unhealthy manner, it isn't tasty enough. Pros: Nothing Cons: Unhealthy food, below avg service, poor ambience more

This place is awesome! 1/20/2007

My Malaysian friend was introduced me to this place over 2 years ago . I keep coming back for more! Every entries is bursting with flavor. I've taken almost every entries I know here at some point in time and almost all of them find it necessary to come back. The food is always fresh & flavorful. You cannot be disappointed here. This place is awesome! more

Is this the same Penang as in NYC/DC/Boston? 12/6/2006

I've actually never been to this one, but I wanted to know if this is the same ""chain"" as the ones that I've been to in NYC and/or Washington, DC? I've frequented these spots when I lived out East, and they were very ""chic"" restaurants; more ambience than flavor. The food wasn't bad, however at the DC restaurant (for instance) there is a Malaysian restaurant literally a few doors down from Penang, and the food at that restaurant (Malaysian Kopitiam) is stellar compared to Penang's. Just wondering if it's the same chain, and if so -- I find it a little weird that they have one in West Covina, but not in/around LA or West Hollywood (or even in Santa Monica or Venice). more

Still the best Malaysian restaurant in LA 9/14/2006

I eat at Penang since they open. I read the other review but for me it same taste as when I eat three years ago at penang. Their menu offers more variety than before. Now they open one in Las Vegas and it as good as one in west covina. I still think penang is the place to try for the best Malaysian food in Los Angeles area. more

Worst Service Ever 9/9/2006

The service here is so bad! One of the servers (a rather big guy) took our order and gave us something totally different. We told him that it is the wrong order but he blamed it on us. When I say ""blamed it on us,"" what he did was point a finger at me and said, ""YOU ordered this."" What kind of a service is that? more

Poor quality Malaysian food 8/27/2006

I've eaten in dozens of Malaysian restaurants and stalls in the U.S. and in Malaysia, and Penang BY FAR has the worst food of them all. Perhaps they've cut costs since the glowing reviews from 2003 and 2005. Cons: food, service more

Authentic food, hot and sweaty restaurant, BAD for groups 7/16/2006

We went to a dinner party here. They served it buffet style. It looks like the servers weren't prepared for this type of serving. We were all cramped in the back. My friend hosting the party looked really stressed about it. She tried to ask the owner for more space to sit people, but he said NO. He said he had a business to run so he needed as much space as possible. The worst part is that the rest of the restaurant never filled up. There was never a wait for the other customers. I know they paid for a lot money for the food and service but it looks like the owner was just greedy. It was hot and humid, maybe they wanted you to feel like you were in Malaysia. Everyone was fanning themselves with the paper. You could see sweat on people's faces before the food was served. We waited over an hour for the food. It was good food though, my favorites were the coconut chicken and kang kung with garlic. All the dishes were really authetic malaysian food. The pandan ayam, penang char kway teow, hainese chicken, penang jumbo shrimp were some other really great dishes. The food was really great, but some of the food ran out quickly while others were overflowing. I would think the food should always be replenished at a buffett. I guess I would probably eat there again but NEVER have a dinner party there. Pros: authentic food Cons: moderate service, bad for group events more

Real Malaysian foods that really spice you up!!!! 11/8/2005

It's spicy the way a real Malaysian food should be!!! Let them cook the right way, which is spicy!!! That's how South-East asian foods are SPICY!!! Lot of real chillis stuffs that burn out your tongue!!!! The decoration is very trendy, lot of high-tech lighting mix with traditional art work!!! Service is very attentive. The only drawback is the location. It's hidden in a small Hong Kong super-market complex in West Covina. Most people may not notice it. Pros: Spicy foods, Decoration. Cons: Location. more

It's Finally Here! 5/18/2003

Finally, a good Malaysian place in the LA area! This was my favorite restaurant back in Boston, and I was so excited that they opened one here. My friends and I ventured 45 miles across town to try it out, and it certainly did not disappoint! The food here is not as spicy as they were in the East Coast counterparts, but still very flavorful. Must try the Roti Canai and Beef Rendang! Pros: wide selection, authentic, just plain good more

as good as it gets! 2/10/2003

no kidding. this place rocks. they have authentic roti chanai and mee goreng. i didn't get the satay, but it's on my list for next time. good ais kachang, too! service was great, oh! and they had the new butter-fried prawns that i had in KL last fall. amazing. :oP my new fav malaysian restaurant! parking was alright at 6pm on a friday, but i'd consider reservations for peak hours. Pros: great food, authentic, good service more
