try it but you might not like it - or the experience 9/22/2011

I knew not to expect much and that's what i got. I went in for highlights or color and a cut.. the bigest thing that i needed was a cut. I requested a phase II because i read reviews that it was worth the money. I ended up getting a phase I without my knowledge.. because when i requested the same person for my next apt and requested the phase ii person they said that he was actually a phase I but he apparently steps in for phase II if someone doesn't show up.. whatever.. so- we started before 1pm and he talked so much about how hair is his thing and can do color with his eyes closed, he rated his skills with highlights and color #1 then weaves then cuts .. so i tried to be optimistic. I was thankful that the highlights came out okay and that my hair was not damaged. I was not so happy that he ran out of time we started at 1pm ended almost at 5pm- he said i could come back for the cut ( i went in on Saturday with an appointment of course). Maybe he would of been quicker if he had not been talking to his friend next door the entire time. Even three people asked if he needed help since it was almost 4:30pm and he had not finished my right side of the highlights. His friend and my hairstylist both bragged about how great of a blow out he gave-- but i wouldn't know until next time. So, i decided to go back since i did get some compliments. So i requested the same person to see if he actually would be done before they closed (the apt was at 9am) and to see if his blow out was sooo fantastic as he and his friend said it was. First i went back for a touch up- i wanted to keep my highlights but it was growing out already-so it should have been less time.. he did not do all of the highlights roots, he used some other color but put in some new highlights i guess to make it blend- he probably wasn't sure what color he had used before and tried to match it. He also gave this huge presentation in trying to sell me their products that which i wasn't interested in and told him that more than once- but still bugged me about it alot- when it was time to leave-. So now I have been looking for a new place to go to while having my roots REALLY grown out.. so that sucks. I ran into this lady that asked me what i had done in the bathroom and i told what i came in for a highlight touch up and she basically said i should complain- my thought what for.. if the teacher didn't ask what did you come in for and do you like the end product.. than why? the teacher did ask do you like it - i said yes- of course i liked the color already, but that was not why i was there.. i was there for a touch up... oh and the blow out- it was descent... though much better than the other students.. i went in another time to do the hair conditioning treatment because it was cheap- the girl they gave me seemed to be scared to touch me-- and well i could have done a better job myself- mind you i almost never do blowouts myself- But you just have to try it yourself. For me- i'm still looking for a hairstylist... so I guess i'll just keep looking - i'm two steps away from doing my own hair... because basically if Paul mitchel's is the cream of the crop students, no wonder there are so many horrible hair dressers out there.. that's why i wanted to try it as well because i've been getting the whatever results for over a $100-200..i have short but alot of hair. so this i guess you could try it -- i did... hopefully you're experience is better, but like i say it's better to have you're own experience -- after all they are students! we all were (i'm an adult) at one point and so i thought might as well... more

Paul Mitchell in Costa Mesa (Hyland Ave) 3/18/2011

It is understandable that anyone would be hesitant or nervous to get their haircut by someone at a school rather than in a salon. But I can say with assurance that my experience at this school was better than most experiences at hair salons. The modern and upscale salon environment made my visit very fun and exciting. At times, I felt as if I were in an expensive salon even. For those who have never been to Paul Mitchell, let me explain the phases of students as I've come to understand them. Phase one students are general students, who have taken classes and been prepared to cut hair, they just don't have as much experience (hours of cutting hair) as the next phase. It will cost you $12 plus tip for this cut. Phase two are the honor roll students who have more experience. For example, the phase two student cutting my hair had already cut hair for over 1,000 hours. I believe phase two are more involved in the workings of the school, such as the design team, but don't take my word as fact. It will cost you $17 plus tip for this cut. It might be beneficial for you to know that as a school, they offer more than haircuts. If you would like a cheap place to get your your make up done, a cheap massage, your hair done (esp for prom), or anything else really beauty wise, Paul Mitchell may be just what you are looking for. It's a clean and upbeat environment, and even though the students are still learning, they are not learning alone (they have guidance). One thing I appreciated about my visit was that the student who was cutting my hair actually asked questions about how i would like it cut. She wanted details so that she would do it right. Even at professional salons, I've never been asked exactly what I want, so I was impressed. As a side note, and as mentioned in previous reviews, this is still a school, and there is still a chance that something could go wrong, so don't go in expecting things to be 100% perfect. I hope this has helped in your decision making! more

Was not a great day at Paul Mitchell the school. 3/30/2010

Yeah,\r \r You're right. I think many would agree. Its sad to say but the prestige that derives from this company is largely self perpetuating by clever marketing, and a highly intelegent and egotistical corperate schema.\r \r Behind all the dental flawse, and self congradulation, what you have is an unethical, hyper agressive, reckless, and dangerous group that have little idea about anything that they are doing.\r \r It is evident in student testimony, it is eveident in the fact that they have had hazardous waste inside their hair care products. This biological hazard waste is not put into their pruducts at the store level but according to court documents, origionates at the manufacture sites.\r \r It is most evident by the fact that the education they offer really is obsurd, substandard, and lacks many of the key fundamentals a cosmetologist needs to practice upon graduation.\r \r Behind all the superficail lip gloss, and lights camera action, you have a misguided, self congradualatory, moraly bankrupt, self defeating, self canabalizing company that really has an amazing concept but totaly defeats its own efforts at the ground level. Thier heads are totaly in the clouds. Ah yes, they use and abuse heir power and money to sabotoge other good people in the industry, all the while their is a loose grip over general company afairs to the point of dangerous recklessness.\r \r The scariest thing is that their is a sadistic air in their treatment and dealings with their own student clientell.\r Its as if to say, ""You signed your contract and now we have you."" Also what can start out as a $25,000.00 investment can often blosom into a $100,000.00 incursion. And they can and do break all their own rules to make a profit. Its criminal.\r \r You are absolutely correct in your assessment my dear. Pros: ? Cons: They have their heads screwed on backwards. more

United States Tax Court 1997:\r \r JPMS had no useful inventory controls. By April 21, 1989, the warehouse was in disarray, and there was a several-months' supply of products stacked up in JPMS' parking? lot. In fact, JPMS tracked its sales by manuallyrecording them on a blackboard. None of the JPMS staff knew how to use computers. \r \r As of April 21, 1989, JPMS had 21 employees who worked in a 90,000-square-foot warehouse space in Santa Clarita, California, owned by Mr. DeJoria and leased by JPMS. As of April 21, 1989, the warehouse space was not in compliance with the local fire code and had no environmental controls for drainage of waste orrunoff? water in the event of fire or disposal of poor-quality product. Some materials used to make hair careproducts are categorized as hazardous waste. \r \r Not good people. Pros: ? Cons: The truth about Paul Mithcells Hazordous Waste Hair Products more

Disapointment with Paul Mitchell The School Coasta Mesa 11/14/2009

If you find youself being bullied, if you protest mal treatment at all, and the management doesn't seem all that concerned by your protests about being bullied, its a safe bet you'll never hold any signifigant roll in the company even if you do perservere and actualy graduate. \r \r There is nothing more pathetic than watching a 45 year old woman in JPMS' Employ with bleach blond hair, in a corset, knee high ass tight mini skirt, and knee high leather boots ganging up with six to eight other students ages 18, 19, 20, and 21 against a single student who has made a life choice not to be a party to the gang bully hipocrate mentality at PMS. Pros: InterNational Milliondollar Money Grabing Hoard Aglometation Cons: Dishonesty in bueisness dealings with students and clients. more

The Truth About Paul Mitchell the School 12/25/2008

Yeah, I had a friend that went to school at the school in California. She said the school was political and the teachers engaged regularly in group harasment of some of the ""out"" students. She said the teachers and faculty were unprofessional, eletist and snoby and it reflected in the work and attitudes of the students. She completed the program and is in the process of paying back the $25,000. in loads incured while in attendance. She said she feels fortunate, some of the students have to restart the program if their attendance is not nearly perfect. Oh, she has also seen other less popular students ejected from the program with out reasonable cause because they did't bow down to the demanding, rude, tyranical management the lords over the establishment at Paul Mitchell the School. If the object, the are told to read the fine print. They can't even litigate. They are directed to mediation with the company. And when you sign the contract you better grin and bear it becase you are required the pay the $25,000.00 by law even if you don't finish the training or get a licence to practice cosmetology. This is very sad and true of the school, Stacy. more

long wait, good cut 11/3/2006

I would've been happier if they didnt have me wait for over 30 min beyond my appointment time for my appointment to start.\r I got a great cut by alex.. but he's graduating in january, so I'll probably never see him again. \r and for 15 bucks for a Level 2 student to do your hair.... I didn't see anyone who was walking out unhappy. Pros: cheap, great work, good location Cons: you're not paying for all the niceties of a salon. more
