Paul Brown Salon

I recently moved to Honolulu and had a bad experience on this Island with my hair.The other day I walked by the Paul Brown Salon in Ward Center hoping someone could fix it. I am very picky with my blond hair and a friendly receptionist highly recommended a stylist name Ines. One week later I was finally sitting on her chair and I have to say, it was worth the wait. I was relieved to see that Ines has a blond hair color herself and felt comfortable right away. She was very professional, attentive and she knew what she is doing. She corrected my orange highlights and gave me nice blond highlights. She suggested to add lowlights for contrast, gave me an awesome shorter haircut and taught me how to style it. Throughout my hair session I learned Ines is from Germany and also been trained there. She is one of the Color Technicians in the Salon and had additional Training at Sassoon in London. Her work speaks for it. She has a pleasant personality and is easy to talk to. I feel in good hands now and no longer have to look for a new stylist. more

When I used to go to the Ward salon the staff was friendly, but it was like walking into a circus.\r Don't ever ask for Paul Brown, unless you are willing to pay a lot of money to let him do what he wants with your hair. more

The problem with these types of chain salons is you never know what you are getting. Sometimes, you get a wonderful result, sometimes you don't. It's a gamble.\r \r To make a very long story short, I made an appointment to see my usual stylist, who I had always liked very much. Upon arriving at the salon, I was told that my regular stylist was no longer with the company, but that another senior stylist would be doing my hair.\r \r The senior stylist did my highlights, which turned out well, but she left and an assistant was left to blowdry/style my hair. He proceeded to burn my scalp multiple times. It was excruciating. And when I was done my hair looked like I was in a hair metal band from the 1980's.\r \r The fee for the highlights and style was $100. I told the woman at the desk that I was satisfied with the highlights, but I got burnt, that I didn't like my style, and that I felt that I should not have to pay the whole $100. She explained that this was not possible so I paid and left.\r \r After making several atempts to resolve the situation through staff, someone very high up in the company called me. When I told him what happened and that I wanted my money, or at least part of it back, he said, ""No."" He explained that if I was really injured I should have medical bills to prove it. He also said perhaps I was being emotional because I was going through a divorce and had been recently diagnosed with a tumor. This was true. I disclosed these facts to the staff in an effort to explain why I was so disappointed in my treatment. I went to the salon to make myself feel better, and I ended up feeling worse. I didn't think these disclosures would be used to make light of my attempts to be treated with courtesy.\r \r To their credit, they did send me one complimentary bottle of product, and the salon said I could come in for a complimentary blowdry/style. I'm a local girl but just moved back home from California where I had my first brazilian waxing done. I was a bit nervous to try someone new but now have no doubt that I have found the right person here on the island. Laura is very personable and instantly made me feel comfortable yet she still maintained her professionalism. She was quick but meticulous and knew just what to say to make the process flow. I love the finished product - thanks Laura!\r I would've given the salon 5 stars but this is the only salon that did not give me a courtesy call to confirm my appt. I had to call the salon the day of to verify and when I called, no one picked up the entire day! When I finally reached someone, the girl said, 'Oh, we have varying schedules...' What?! I expected more in terms of professionalim from the salon itself but glad that didn't deter me from the outstanding service I received from Laura. more

One of the best kept secret at Paul Bown I think is their makeup department. I have been going to Greg every month for eyebrow waxing for almost two years now. I guess I am hooked. Greg is very friendly and quick. I never had to wait for more than 10 minutes even without appointments. Greg's work is flawless. I always received good compliments from my friends after Greg did my eyebrows. Greg does makeup too. One of my coworks used Greg for her wedding and she and her bridemaids all looked classy and elegant. Next time when I have some big functions to attend, I plan to make an appointment with Greg to do my makeup. Overall I like the bustling atmosphere at Paul Brown and thoroughly enjoyed Greg's services. Pros: Fast service, friendly staff, convenient location Cons: Crowded parking, Can be busy more

My experience was not good. After I was done at Paul Brown I went to Chop and corrected my Hair. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

I have a classic bob haircut. I won't let anyone except Dave Corpuz cut my hair. I have had my hair cut by a lot of stylists in Honolulu.. I lived in San Francisco 13 years and had my hair cut by great stylists there. Now only Dave cuts my hair. I go to Dave religiously every 6 weeks or so. I appreciate the fact that Dave starts early and it is possible to get my hair cut at 8 AM on a Saturday. Dave doesn't like to run behind, so arrive on time and no one will have to wait. more

Being a guy, the spa experience is a new thing to me. However, after my first facial experience with Laura Gordon, I have become a committed monthly client. Being someone that is hard to get a gift for, I highly recommend the gift of Laura Gordon. The spa was the last thing I thought that I would enjoy?I was wrong. \r One of the first things that I noticed was Laura?s ability to connect with me and make me feel comfortable about the process. Because of my career, I am very familiar with the body and its overall functions?nevertheless, I learned even more about skin! Laura?s approach focuses on education as she does her treatments. Moreover, she is pro-active about healthy skincare and recommends solutions that reflect healthy lifestyle behaviors. From a style standpoint, Laura is gentle and efficient when clearing my pores?afterward, my skin felt like a baby?s bum. I have to say, I was very relaxed after the treatment?I felt drunk! But damn, I looked good! Upon leaving, Laura recommended nutritional changes and a treatment to address some of my skin redness and the acne on my back. With my Celtic background eyebrow waxing was worse than the dentist until I went to Greg at Paul Brown. Not only does it always look great when he's done, but it is the most comfortable. His technique is quick and painless, unlike other place I have tried. Who knew there was such artistry involved in waxing.\r And the photo I had taken after he did my full makeup is the picture I have been using professionally for almost 5 years now. I don't really wear makeup often, but trust Greg to ""dress me up"" when I need it for a special event. Pros: easy free parking at Ward Ctr in the middle of the day. Paul Brown is really busy and for good reasons. Their styling makes you look your best. The best deal at Paul Brown to me is their eyebrow waxing. It's very affordable, which makes it easier for me to visit regularly whenever I need to look and feel better. I usuaully use Greg. He is very friendly and attentive, and very professional. And the wait was usually less than 10 minutes. Now I got several of my girl friends and coworkers hooked as well. We all swear by Greg at Paul Brown for our little affordable luxury. more

I have been getting my brows done at Paul Brown in Ward for about 5 years now. Usually, I see one of the guys in the make up area, but recently walked in and couldn't get an appointment. I saw Laura Gordon, an Esthetician that works upstairs in the spa. What a different experience! Not only was it the most relaxing (yes, relaxing) 30 minutes I spent all week, she did an amazing job. Never has anyone downstairs spent the time she did making sure my brows were EVEN and CLEAN. She even went over where I was allowed to touch them up at home and how to apply powder to make them look polished every time. Then she consulted with me on my skin and simple things I can do to improve it! I highly recommend her if you have brow issues or just need a change of pace from wax and go in 10 minutes you usually get. An extra benefit: no redness! She's amazing! Pros: Perfect brows with no redness or pain! Cons: I don't see any now that I've found Laura! more

I was so scared to try a bikini wax, but everyone is always talking about it, so I had to give in. I figured if you're going to do it, do it right, and went for the Brazilian! All I have to say is you MUST see Laura at Paul Brown. She is hands down the best. She talked me through the whole process and told me not to be afraid and that it wasn't a big deal at all. I was laughing the whole time thanks to her ""great job"" and ""AWESOME"" and ""perfect, you're going to love it!"" comments. Not only is she super gentle, fast, and thourough, she' s full of so much information about skin care and so friendly! I convinced my friend to try her who always goes to Heaven on Earth and she swears she's the best on island too. Seriously, go see Laura, you'll love her! First of all I had to wait 20 minutes as well for the haircut. Then I specifically ask the stylist, Vince, to not cut off too much. I have really long hair and I simply wanted a trim. A TRIM. He cut off a small piece to see if it was ok and it was about an inch. He cut the hair in less than 20 minutes and when he was done four inches was removed. I don't have eyes behind me head so I couldn't really see how much he was cutting in the back. It took me years to grow out my hair to the length that I had it (2 inches below the bra line) and now it is 2 inches above the bra line. I also have really flat hair (its asian hair). I specifically said that I like a lot of body. When he was done there were layers cut too high that it sits limp regardless of how much hair products i put in it and how i blowdry it. If you want to get your hair cut by the way the stylists wants it then get your hair cut there. They don't seem to listen. more

If you can believe it I actually look forward to having hair ripped from my face when I go to get my brown arches done by Greg Howell. He is such a great guy and so sweet that I don't mind the experience at all. :-) He always sends me out of there looking fabulous. Anyone would be lucky to go to him for their brows and makeup. :-) more

The Brow Master, Greg Howell is THE best brow and makeup person in town! He's aring, professional and very knowledgable when it comes to facial waxing, brow shaping and makeup. He's given me several ""make overs"" that were easy for me to do myself, including my makeup for my recent wedding.\r I love how he's able to utilize what you already use and are comfortable with and takes you to that next level. He recently did a quickie makeover for my 66 year old mother and who came out feeling like a new woman. In fact, she kept wanting to take Greg home in her suitcase!\r Not only is he a fantastic brow and makeup guy, he's also charming, funny and witty. Greg Howell at Paul Brown in Ward Center, is one of the best stylists I have ever used. I am a professional actor in NY and LA and have access to just about anyone I could choose. I choose Greg , and even make special trips to Honolulu, just to have him work with me. He does my hair and makeup for all the events i go to and perform in. I always look special and have a different look each time. He is quick and professional, fun and supportive. THE best brow person anywhere! I adore him! I wish he could travek with me!!! Greg Howell is the best in the salon at eyebrow waxing and shaping. He is also a fantastic makeup artist. He is fast and friendly. I always walked out feeling like a million bucks after seeing him. He is always on time with my appointments. And you can usually walk in without an appointment too. more

I'm a veteran with facials and I have to say that Laura at Paul Brown is a best kept secret! I saw her for a wonderfuly customized facial where she educated me on skin care while completely relaxing me. I love the products that they use and have had great results at home. Laura also did my brows and they came out perfect! While downstairs is a little crazy and there are people everywhere, you'll be quickly whisked upstairs to the serene spa area. You won't be disappointed! Pros: Great facial, relaxing and therapeutic Cons: Downstairs is busy, staff at front desk can be rude more
