Booked this through my partners recommendation, really nice hotel. Friendly staff. Room is clean. The baths are a bonus for the USA - deep roll top tubs. The location is good although the adult theatre next door could be off putting for some. Parking is in the garage across the street at a reduced cost from the normal garage prices. If hiring a car through Alamo the office is right across the street. It is 5 minutes walk to Union Square- downhill although the walk up can be a struggle. The restaurant in the basement serves really good quality french food at a good price and is worth a visit. more

The hotel is in a great location next to Union Square. We stayed for three nights and did not have a car ($40 cab from the airport). We were able to walk, take the bus, cable car, etc. to all points in the city. The rooms were clean and the breakfast was enjoyable. We had two choices for breakfast - French toast or eggs and toast. The French toast was delicious and was served a lot faster than the eggs. more

I stay at Hotel Cornell every trip to SF. It is cozy, wonderfully European, so convenient and the restaurant, well, I have had fantastic meals there. If you're looking for floor to ceiling marble bathrooms etc., this is not the place for you and you'll need a much bigger wallet. But if you are looking for a charming, comfortable, affordable and fantastically located hotel in SF, don't miss Hotel Cornell. more

I loved my stay at the Cornell Hotel de France. The staff was very nice. It was homey and beautiful with all the art on the walls: both hand painted and framed. The morning breakfast was my favorite - with the friendliest servers!!!. Fantastic and safe location. - Loved being blocks away from San Francisco landmarks. I really enjoyed my stay and will definitely be back. more

My wife and I recently stayed at this 6/1/2012

My wife and I recently stayed at this hotel for four nights. We had a room on the top floor (6th floor) on the Amedeo Modigliani themed floor. The room was spacious, especially by San Francisco standards. The bed exceeded our expectations and we always slept comfortably. We had visited about 14 years ago when we were dating and I thought that $85 was a steep price back then. But, it is well worth the $140 plus per night rate. We enjoyed our breakfast immensely. The ambiance was genteel, without the stuffiness. And, the food, especially the french toast, was superb. The service was also extraordinary for a hotel in this ""class.""I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be close to Union Square without any of the major drawbacks. more

beautiful hotel 5/7/2012

Stayed at Hotel Cornell for a long get-away weekend in San Francisco. This small hotel was constructed in 1910, the property has always been a hotel. Rooms are clean and tastefully/comfortably furnished, Common areas are likewise clean, attractive and functional. The included American breakfast (French toast or eggs and bacon) served in the basement dining room (again very clean and comfortable) makes a wonderful start to the day. Didnt try the restaurant for dinner, however did learn it is popular with locals for an authentic French meal. Most walls in the common areas are decorated with either murals or artwork. Found that to really add charm and uniqueness to the decor. Now understand that this hotel is not a Marriott, Hilton, Westin, etc etc. Some might find the traffic noise intrusive and the actual size of the room too cramped. If you are expecting a business-class hotel like the cookie-cutter chains then you might want to pass. If you are looking for a cozy, romantic, unique experience in San Francisco then you have to check this place out. With only 50 rooms the staff takes the time to get to know you and personalize your experience. That was truly wonderful! Parking is at a garage across the street - $20 a night (great deal for SF) with unlimited in/out and priority on account of being a hotel guest. The value received at Hotel Cornell is as good as I have experienced anywhere in the world. more

Confortable 4/27/2012

The hotel provides a great location to get around SF and once you know the Muni system etc it's easy. The facilities are very good and rooms comfortable, although the smaller rooms can be little cosy. We would have liked tea or coffee in the room or a central point at which to go for it. Instead our enquiry was politely dealt with by a referral to the kitchen staff to see if they would co-operate. We had a fallback plan!Breakfast was a treat again. The server in the morning is so bright and cheerful that your day must start off well. Food is great and there is sufficient for a good start to your day. Listen carefully as the accent is a bit strong but then our accent is probably as difficult! There are some good restaurant options close by if you don't want the 4 course option in Jeanne D'Arc restaurant. more

Perfect Spot 4/18/2012

The location of the hotel was perfect; near the cable car & bus lines. The included breakfast was generous & the waitress was efficient & cheerful & the French music playing in the background was soothing. The old French elevator was fun to use. We felt the cost of our stay was very reasonable especially considering the location in San Francisco. We booked a medium sized room & would not have enjoyed a smaller room. All of the staff members were friendly & very helpful. It helped in the enjoyment of our visit that they were experiencing record breaking warm weather & we could be comfortable without sweaters or jackets. more

The best! 4/16/2012

This was our first trip to San Francisco and we had no idea where to stay. I found this hotel listed in Frommers, and read the reviews before making reservations. After spending four nights there, I cannot understand the negative comments. The rooms are smallish, as expected in a European style older hotel, but they were quaint and very clean. Both rooms we had (we stayed three nights, and then another before returning home) had large claw foot tubs with shower enclosure. The towels were luxurious and there were actually real glasses instead of plastic! The hotel is ideally located near Union Square and steps from the Powell cable car lines, and the area abounds with eateries. The hotel itself has a very nice french restaurant and serves breakfast included in the fare. The entire staff was delightful and very helpful with questions about the area. We would not hesitate to return, or suggest the hotel to our friends. more
