Great izakaya style food and drinks - Poor Service 7/14/2008

Went there on Sunday night with 6 others. Great little izakaya style restaurants serving sushi, kushiyaki, and other. We went there for the kushiyaki and drinks (the restaurant being an izakaya). The food was decent, however the service was subpar. Our waitress had a great attitude, but just could not remember our order (not sure why since she did write it down). We had to remind her plenty of times regarding our food and drink orders. I think it was only that particular waitress. I think the owner(s) should reconsider it's operations. I would recommend Yakitori Koshiji in Wellers Court (Little Tokyo) over this.\r Pros: If you live in Rowland Heights/Hacienda the location is great, if you are closer to little tokyo, go there. more

Ojiya (chino hills) 7/30/2007

The original Ojiya - a small restaurant with delicious food.\r I should know. I started going that when it was first opened as Honda-ya with Taka-san's special mini-sushi, which then changed to another sushi restaurant, and then finally changed to Ojiya. Plus, I go there so often that I don't even have to order...the servers know exactly what I want. Their cajun albacore nigiri with garlic chips is to die for. Dishes to try: agedashi tofu (fried soft tofu in soup), seared peppered salmon, hot inaniwa udon, broiled fish (mackerel or yellowtail cheek) seasonal specials, and the butterfly roll (it's not on the menu, but if you like salmon and tuna wrapped in salmon skin covered with tempura, then you must try it.) This place accommodates for customers who like their food cooked with cheap 2 to 3 item bentos that comes with salmon/chicken/beef teriyaki, salad, california rolls/sushi, rice, and/or popcorn chicken. Oh and their tea is excellent. It doesn't have that numbing aftertaste like a lot of restaurants. \r \r The service is always excellent. (The male servers tend to forget the simple things like refill on water, request for extra dishes, etc. but the female servers are excellent.) If you order to-go, they carefuly double wrap the soup/sauces so that it won't spill and they even carry your to-go out to your car for you. The restaurant is clean and the sushi is always fresh. Also the price is just right. I can feed 6 people 'til they're content without breaking the bank. There are a lot of locals (including the lady with the cowboy hat and me =)) who go there regularly and they can usually be seen seated at the sushi bar. Hence, the place is always crowded. Pros: delicious fresh sushi and excellent servers Cons: it's getting a bit crowded nowadays and they're not open on mondays T.T more

Izakaya on the Eastside! 6/30/2007

Ojiya is a real Japanese izakaya. It's probably not the best izakaya I've been to, but finding one in Hacienda Heights -- and a pretty good one at that is a gem. I decided to check it out last night for dinner. They're located in a large strip mall so there's plenty of parking. The menu is pretty extensive including all the standard small dishes, but also sushi & noodles as well. We stuck strictly with the small dishes so I can't tell you what their sushi or noodles are like. I really liked their baked black cod, chicken liver, and the braised pork belly. But, there's a really really huge selection of other things for those of you who are less adventurous. Our server just kept them coming, and not a single dish disappointed. That along with a few beers, some sake, more shochu , and some good friends, and you're ready for a good time. Pros: Tasty Eats. Quality dishes. Easy Parking. Authentic Japanese. Cons: Service was a little slow, but I suspect because they had just opened. It looked like they were hiring more
