Best

Nippon Tei was wonderful! I love sushi and have been trying restaurants around the city to find the best place to go. Well, so far it is Nippon Tei. Wow! I was amazed at the q...

Worst

The fusion dishes are big. Every dish comes from a lot of oil, they're very greasy. I had stomaches every time I left this restaurant. In terms of the sushi, the fish doesn't stic...

Good Sushi, Good Service, Nice Atmosphere 4/13/2007

I have visited this location for sushi numerous times and had a wonderful experience on each occasion. Prompt, courteous service and some of the better sushi I've experienced in St. Louis. I have recommended this restaurant to several friends and family and all have agreed that it was a wonderful choice. I am not a ""rookie"" or an ""insider"" and will note that ""whartonmba's"" reviews of all restaurants have been nothing short of hostile and insulting to people that do enjoy their food-reading some of the responses and having knowledge of the industry-maybe it is not the venue but the patron?! Ignorant negative attitudes breed less attentive service my friends. I'm not arguing that there are other top rating sushi establishments in STL but this one rates my top 5....maybe I'm just a less miserable person.... Quaint, relaxing atmosphere with creative and unique offerings-I'd recommend anyone try it and make their own determination. People are always quick to complain and hesitant to compliment in the restaurant industry-for a change of pace, my compliments to Nippon Tei!! more

Slow order, suspicious food 3/16/2007

I went there last week to celebrate my little boy's birthday (our first visit), my family went home having a whole night of diarrheaa. I suspect it's the warm raw sushi... BTW, the order took more than half an hour though there're just few customers... Don't try the salty miso soup and salad... they will ruin your night... Pros: Ambience Cons: Sushi, Food, Service, Value more

Great Local Place, or a desination Sushi Spot 2/26/2007

Nippon Tei is one of my favorite restaurants in St. Louis, as I am a weekly regular. The sushi is excellent, the rolls are creative, and the staff could not be more friendly. Even though I am a regular, they make everyone feel just as welcome. The non-sushi items are as amazing as you find at any restaurant; the fusion menu is unique and full of test, while the Ichiban Steak is second to none, especially for a spicy pallete. Yes, the restaurant can be crowded, putting extra pressure on any sushi staff, but be patient, as the wait is well worth it and the ambience & atmosphere makes for a wonderful evening. Great for a romantic night or a family dinning experience, Nippon Tei is a must try on anyone's list. Pros: Ambience, Staff, Unique Menu more

High Quality 2/23/2007

I enjoy coming to Nippon Tei where the food, the atomsphere, and service is superb! I am not a rookie sushi eater, I have lived in California and in Georgia where the sushi is to die for! For a long time I was searching for a sushi restaurant in St. Louis that had that taste that I was missing. Nippon Tei has it. My husband and I recommend friends and family and they all are very satisfied that we introduced them to Nippon Tei. It's the restaurant with friendly service and makes you feel welcome. That's why my husband proposed to me there with the help with one of the staff! Pros: service and food more

BAD FOOD AND HORRIBLE SERVICE 2/14/2007

BAD FOOD AND HORRIBLE SERVICE (Obviously those positive ones are from their insiders...)\r \r The food is really bad comparing to other local Japanese restaurants. The miso soup was SO SALTY that we could impossibly finish it. The sushi was ok. The beef of the sukiyaki was as thick as a steak.... The place looked nice but the food really sucked.... Only rookie eaters would think it's good...\r \r Not to forget mentioning the bad service of this place, the petite asian server (a thai man), who was indeed the manager, was rude and slow to respond (forgot my coke and never refilled). On my wife's birthday, we ordered many dishes, and the asian server gave us a dish of sushi roll we didn't order, we didn't realize the presence of that extra dish, he later SECRETLY charged us for it as he said we already ate it, and we had to pay for it. He didn't admit the fact that he sent us the wrong dish. He even said it's our mistake for not teling him we got the extra dish. In fact, we would have paid for it if he told us the truth but he didn't. We never reward liars.\r \r More ridicously, he added a 18% tips to our inflated bill, unlike other tables' bills. First, he was not quite willing to take the extra dish off from our bill until we told him we might not go back to the restaurant. Then, he lied again by saying every table had the tips calculated, again, which was a lie (we didn't take a peek at the neighbor table's bill). \r \r Finally, he took the tips out from the bill after we wasted 15 minutes arguing with him. Later, we paid the regular bill, headed out, and got into my car at the parking lot, he waved his hands, ran at us, and tried to throw some pennies at my car. He was even rude enough to swear at us. For a few bucks, this restaurant has forever lost two customers and their friends' businesses. How stupid was he?\r \r Time to go to other Japanese restaurants instead. Pros: Place Cons: Bad food, bad service, slow orders more

Inconsistant 4/15/2006

Nippon Tei is one of the best looking places for sushi in St. Louis, but the sushi inconsistant. Some items have been very good to excellent. The rice is sometimes slightly strongly flavored and sometimes weak (probably poor mixing), and the neta (topping on the nigiri) sometimes too thin/small. Once I had the only truely bad piece of fish I've had in ten years in St. Louis. Service is inconsistant too -- often slow and unreactive -- for example, the server barely acknowledged it when I told him about the bad fish. It's generally OK if you're in the area, but there are better places not too far away. Pros: Occasionally great, Cool atmosphere, Parking Cons: Inconsistant food, Poor service more

A Favorite Place 7/9/2003

Nippon Tei is a favorite place for sushi. The atmosphere is clean and relaxing; the sushi is very good; the raspberry iced tea is the best in the nation. Pros: decor, spotless restrooms, raspberry iced tea Cons: hard to find more

Quaint and Good 11/1/2002

Nippon Tei is a great little place to go for a nice, but realistically priced meal. I have only tried the sushi which I thought I was good for St. Louis. I have had sushi in California and Seattle. You can't get better sushi than you can on the coast. Overall, I would say Nippon Tei is a very good place for sushi in St. Louis. I had been looking for a good place here and I think this is pretty close. The atmosphere is small and lightly light. It has a romantic touch. more
