I've been to Nicholas restaurant half a dozen times and came to realize over the last few visits that the service stinks. Some of their food is good but my dessert was a pile of ...

Excellent! 1/6/2003

I am of middle eastern origin, and I eat out 3 times a week. I love this place. It is vegan/vegeterian friendly, and have a good ambience. The picture that is showing at citysearch right now is old, they redecorated the place and it looks great! The food is very good. The service is friendly too. Their vegeterian meze was so good, and plentiful, I had leftovers for two days. The chicken kebab was really good, and their rice is the best I had in a Portland restaurant. However, the foul modamas was not very good. Strongly recommended! To Citysearch: Why is this rest. not listed in the restaurants section? Pros: Great Food more

'LAS IS MORE 12/31/2002

I LIKE A PLACE WITH GOOD MUSIC, VEGAN OPTIONS, LAMB, FUNKY AMBIENCE, TASTY FOOD AND A REASONABLE RATE. THIS PLACE HAS IT. IT ALSO HAS SAUCY SERVICE. IT FEELS ETHNIC. BUT APPROACHABLE. Pros: deliscious, funky, vegan and meaties, cheap, good music Cons: no cards, no reservations more

tasty food 12/27/2002

I ate lunch at Nicholas'. I was very happy with the food. The lamb and rice was very good. more

Bring Cash 9/29/2002

This place is bustling, even at 1pm. If you go with someone else, order the super ultra combo meal thingy, its $7 that you can split and have leftovers. Lots of veggie dishes. Good for veggies, bad for carnivores. Bring CASH. They do not accept cards. more

Don't miss this one 9/6/2002

Lots of super-tasty food that you can afford to eat regularly. Also great takeout when youre on the go- 10 times better than fast-food at practically the same price. Their bread is wonderful and baked fresh minutes before landing on your table. The baba ghanoush is terrific. Be adventurous and try the authentic Lebanese items such as the delicious Manakish, a pizza made of bread with olive oil and herbs. One outstanding thing about Nicholas' is it's one of the few places meat-eaters and vegans can eat together without anybody having to sacrifice. There are all kinds of things on the menu that are just naturally vegan and vegetarian. Watch out though, this place is really popular. Expect to wait a while on the big nights like Friday and Saturday. Most weekday nights are still busy but you won't have to wait for a table. Pros: Great Value, Delicious Food, Vegan Choices Cons: Very busy sometimes more

Best hummus in town 9/3/2002

Order the veggie mezza, one will be enough for two hungry people. It's the best $7.50 you can spend! However, don't expect prompt service. more

Super-Waiter! 8/31/2002

The food was great and our waiter was amazing. He was waiting on the whole restaurant and the people sitting outside. I don't like having to wait in line for a table though. Pros: service, yum Cons: wait more

Draws a crowd for good reason 8/30/2002

Get here early, and prepare for a 30-minute wait during peak weekend times. The staff, though kind, don't have a clear ""host station"" to direct people where to sign in, where to wait, etc. The waiting area is non-existent. That being said, if you don't mind the wait during peak times (it's probably better on weekdays), the food is wonderful. I couldn't tell you what to order, because it's all good. Large portions-- tomorrow's lunch is made. The veggie mezze for one really feeds two to four people for an app. Pros: amazing food, large portions, cheap prices Cons: long waits, crowded space, closes at 9 more

cheap Lebanese food 8/20/2002

The food at Nicholas' isn't the best ever, but it is very good and definitely worth the money. It is far better than your other options when you're on a small budget. If you just get gyros and drink water, two people can scrape by on about fifteen dollars, or less if you're willing to share something. Pros: cheap Cons: crowded more

great small diner 8/14/2002

I loved the food and the place is really nice. The service was great. Everyone that worked there was very nice to us, and very personable more

Small but Great 8/14/2002

This is the best lebanese food I have ever tasted! I was definitely skeptical at first, but ever since it is one of my favorite restaurants! Fresh, flavorful, friendly, and CHEAP! Excellent Hummus and Tzatziki. Great for a date, just order the mezza platter and it will come with a slew of exciting new dishes to explore. Take your friends with you its a hole in the wall, but fun! Pros: Fresh, Tasty, Cheap Cons: Variabiltiy daily more

An excellent meal with solid, prompt, and quick serivce. Although the outside appearance isn't fantastic, the interior is very unique and welcoming. more

Not what it Ganooj to be 8/1/2002

I'm lowering Nicholas' rating ONLY because I remember how much better it used to be. Don't get me wrong, you're still getting a screaming deal on some of the best food in town served by some of the nicest restauranteurs. But as word spread on this unobtrusive oasis, the quality and portions have suffered. Gyros are the standard and well above board, but to get the true deal go for a mezza -- 2 people should get 1 meat and 1 vegetarian and share! And if I give it an 8 now, think of what you missed if you're just now finding it. Pros: price, quality, unpretensious Cons: seating more

Cry a ""fowl"" 7/22/2002

I love this place...the fowl (fool) Mudamas is the best I have ever tasted. I need this receipe!! Quaint, cozy, this is the perfect rainy season restaurant--comfort food at it's finest. And for these sunny, hot months, quick light appetizers are the only way to go for lunch & dinner. Pros: vegetarian selection, price, location Cons: limited seating more

Yumm! 7/19/2002

One of the best Lebanese restaurants I've been to yet. Awesome tabouli! Perfect hummus! The only thing that disappointed me was they didn't have true Lebanese baklava... it was the Greek version. But it won't keep me from going back! Pros: Inexpensive, Great Menu, Great Service Cons: Poor Parking more

hey, what's the big deal? 7/15/2002

Last night my husband, myself and 2 other friends tried Nicholas after hearing great things. The prices were very affordable, and the food was ok, but there were 2 very disapointing aspects of our dinner. The first was that they were out of hummus...excuse me, I know that it is homemade, but this is a middle eastern restaurant... The second, was the service. We had an ok waiter, but when we asked a different waitress for something she was unbelievably rude. Just because this is a ""cheap eats"" place, it shouldn't be bad service as well. We may go back to try it again, but this time, only as take out. Pros: cheap, decent food Cons: packed, horrid service more

Yum! 6/1/2002

My husband and I both love this little place. It's not much on ambiance but every menu item we have tried has been fantastic! Plus the price is great. Good food at a great price is a combination that keeps us comming back. more

Fantastic mezza platter 5/15/2002

Nicholas offers great deals on some of the best Middle Eastern food in town. The mezza platter is delicious--and a bargain. Servers are friendly and quick. The space is a little cramped, though, and it can be difficult to move around. Takeout is a good option. more
