We had a wonderful experience recently using Neil Kelly to remodel our downstairs, including the kitchen. Our designer, Joel Fraley, really listened and understood what we wanted. He handled the arrangements for all aspects of the project and this is exactly what we wanted. When the work started Project Manager, Paul Louis did a fantastic job and stuck to the schedule. The work was done on time and the house was cleaned up each night. We really appreciate all the time and effort Joel put into the design and we love the results. It was wonderful to have someone dealing with all the issues and it made the remodeling a pleasant experience. I would definitely use Neil Kelly again and recommend them to anyone. more

My wife and I recently downsized from an older home with lots of charm in NE Portland to a newer home in SW Portland with more creature comforts but less charm. We knew we would eventually want to make the place our own by remodeling the first floor and installing a new kitchen. After several months of searching for the right designer, my wife attended a Neil Kelly seminar and came home raving about the presenter, Joel Fraley. So we invited him over, walked him through the house and began hashing out ideas. He had some great suggestions, like replacing our kitchen island with a peninsula to open up working space. No detail was too big or too small. We talked everything from counter tops and cabinets to light fixtures to hardwood floors. So we hired him and never looked back. After settling on the design, Joel introduced us to Paul Louis, our Project Manager. We had a meeting where they explained the logistics of demolition and construction. We went over the contract in detail so there were no surprises. And Paul drafted a ten-week project schedule so we would know what to expect and when. This was a pretty big job involving all the trades: plumbing, mechanical, electrical, tile, paint and carpentry. Every day we had someone show up at the house ready to go to work. I was amazed at how well they were able to stick to the schedule, even after my wife decided three weeks into the project that she wanted the powder room remodeled as well. The tradesmen and women were always polite and fun to talk to. They did a great job cleaning up after themselves. Ten weeks to the day, the job was finished. Living through a remodel wasn't particularly pleasant, but in the end it was more than worth it. Our first floor has been done to our taste and we finally have our gourmet kitchen. We could not be more pleased, and I highly recommend Neil Kelly in general and Joel Fraley and Paul Louis in particular if you're considering a home remodel. more

Had a recent wonderful experience with Neil Kelly on our kitchen remodel. We?d had prior experience with NK (built-in media center/bookcase that was the main selling point for that house 15 years ago) and beyond browsing at warehouse stores never really looked at another option. As expected, everything went smoothly. Joel Fraley provided outstanding design advice/plans incorporating our suggestions and a request to make the project as green as possible. He also scaled the project to our budget without sacrificing the features we most wanted. Paul Louis was there for us every step of the way managing the project. All the subcontractors were exceptional and considerate. Projects were completed on time and as specified. Both Joel and Paul were available by phone/email throughout. more

Recently we had our kitchen remodeled by Neil Kelly Design and Remodeling. Our designer, Joel Fraley did a great job. He listened to what we wanted and what we did not like about our old kitchen, and then designed a wonderful new kitchen for us. It turned out great. We wanted a design that would be in keeping with the character of our house, which is an old farmhouse, but would also be a classic design that would not look dated in a few years. We are really pleased with the results. Of course, no kitchen remodel is cheap, but Joel worked to keep the cost within our budget and there were no hidden surprises. The kitchen is beautiful, from the cabinets to the wall color, we are very happy. It was a very good experience overall. We would definitely recommend Joel and our project manager, Paul Louis to our friends and family. Neil Kelly does great work, we had 2 bathrooms remodeled a couple years ago and they turned out wonderful as well. We had a one year and a two year follow up to make sure that there were no problems and it is impressive that a company cares with that kind of follow up. We will have that with our kitchen as well. We have had 3 wonderful experiences over the years using Neil Kelly Co for major renovations of an old house and wouldn't hestitate to do so again or to recommend them without qualification. They do a thorough, creative and thoughtful job in the design phase, provide a detailed plan for exactly what work will be done when, anticipate most issues so that there are few change orders, and they do this almost to the day on their projected time frame. While it may seem that they are slightly more expensive than many competitors, it is worth it bcause of the quality of the work, reliability, few change orders to add expense and their overall good relationships with their subs. They make it all happen with only the necessary disruption to the homeowner. Therese DuBravac and Tony Butchart were a perfect team. more

I would caution people to be aware of what you are getting for your money. Neil Kelly takes a design fee and with this fee they create the design/plans and price the labor and materials for your work. The final price is supposed to be within your budget range and the range is stated on the design contract. This doesn't always happen, I know from personal experience. My final quoted price ended up being a lot more than my budget amount, and no amount of re-pricing could bring it in line. They kept cutting out things I wanted done to try and get the price down until the scope of the work was about half of what I initially wanted. Needless to say, no remodel for me, but I was out thousands of dollars for the design. I wish I would have declined to pay the fee up front or made sure it was refundable if they did not deliver within my budget. They are explicit this fee is non-refundable, so my bad in assuming they could deliver within my financial constraints. However, it seems to me they should have had the expertise to know that my budget was not enough to do the job. more

We had a very positive experience with Neil Kelly on a recent remodeling project covering our kitchen, family room, and part of our living room. When Joel Fraley visited our home the first few times, to begin the design process, he very quickly understood the direction we wanted, design style, and what works best with the existing style of the house. We were also very clear about our budget limitations and time frame, which he was sensitive to. The design process went smoothly, and we ended up very happy with the result. We had an excellent project manager, Paul Louis. He kept everything moving very close to schedule. The construction team was very professional and considerate, as well as very experienced - the quality of the work was very high. Throughout the project attention was paid to the details. The project completed on time and on budget, with a result we are very happy with. Neil Kelly was not the 'cheapest' option in our bid process, but I do think they are the best value for the money. I would recommend them if high quality and a hassle-free project are important. more

We selected Neil Kelly to design and build a new kitchen in our Pearl District condo. We liked their team approach and their capability to handle and coordinate all aspects of our project, including working with our condo association board to obtain the required approval and obtaining all city permits. The building manager of our condo management company stated that our permit application, which was compiled by the Neil Kelly designer and project manager, was the most complete and detailed he had ever seen. We received approval in one meeting. In addition, the fact that Neil Kelly selected and approved all the sub-contractors for their competence and reliability was a key factor in our decision to hire the company. We thoroughly enjoyed working with our designer, Janel Campbell, and are thrilled with the design how well it is integrated seamlessly into our existing home. Janel greatly facilitated the decision process every step of the way from the cabinet selection, to granite and tile selection and paint colors, to small details such as drawer inserts and hardware. In addition, she was very sensitive to our design aesthetics and budget. The entire team was a pleasure to work with and to have in our home on a daily basis during construction. All in all, it was a very positive experience. more

It was past time to update our Condo kitchen and two bathrooms. Since we had used Neil Kelly before to do a total remodel of our 1930's kitchen several years ago we could only think of going back to Neil Kelly. They had a difficult challenge and the outcome was wonderful. I had also recommended Neil Kelly to my mother to do total remodel of her kitchen and bathroom and she was as pleased as we were. Besides we have heard stories about project not being completed in a timely manor and other problems with other companies. We knew what to expect with Neil Kelly due to past experience and it was all good. Again we are very pleased with the recent project. We worked with Designer David Ewing and Project Manager Tony Butchart. Both are quite knowledgeable and have very professional skills. We had a certain look we wanted to achieve and David took the time and made the effort to make sure the end result was what we wanted. Tony Buchart made sure to keep us updated and was on the site daily. The Tradespeople that work with Neil Kelly were polite, fast, quiet, trustworthy and they always cleaned up as they work. We recently finished a first-floor remodel using Neil Kelly--living and dining room and two bedrooms, one of which we converted into a library/office. The work was beautiful. They completely transformed one bedroom with built-in bookshelves and a built-in desk, and did significant work elsewhere and it all looks great. We bought a condo in the Pearl that had Neil Kelly cabinets. When we wanted to add a kitchen island and built-in bookcase we thought it would be best to have them do it since they were already familiar with the site and materials. We had the great good fortune of working with Therese DuBravac and, because of her design ability and follow through (with every little detail), we will most definitely hire Neil Kelly again. Nothing was overlooked, from our overall concept to dust protection. While they aren't the least expensive they are, without a doubt, worth every penny. We were heard, respected and catered to as if we were a multi-million dollar client and when you're just getting a kitchen island, such treatment makes a big impression. We had our den fireplace refaced, a cupboard installed between kitchen and den, remodeled powder bathroom and replaced a dry bar with custom cabinet. Neil Kelly's team of Janel Campbell, Dan Moore and Mike Kliewer were complete professionals from beginning to end. The design process was painless, enjoyable and flexible; the project was managed so we had someone working every day and we knew exactly what to expect; the work was done flawlessly with the mess cleaned up every day. We cannot say enough about Neil Kelly and our expert designer, Joel Fraley, who designed the historic remodel of our attic space in our 1910 Craftsman bungalow. We had an unfinished attic that we wanted to convert to a Master bedroom and possibly add a new bathroom, and needed a new furnace and water heater, but didn't know where to begin. When we first met Joel, we felt we were in good hands. We felt a sense of trust, respect, and the feeling that we weren't being pushed to do or pay for anything extra. Joel took the time to listen to our ideas, answer our questions, and provide us with ideas that we hadn't considered throughout the design process that were perfect for our old home. The new space is energy efficient and feels like it was always a bedroom space, while the bathroom is modern, but has the historic details of our home. We always felt like our ideas and suggestions for the remodel were taken into consideration. The designing and remodeling project could have been so stressful, but Joel and the Neil Kelly team made it flow smoothly by being available to us during the months of work: answering questions, limiting disruptions, and handling contractors. Minor mishaps (that happen during any remodel) were handled quickly and efficiently, and Joel was persistent in making sure they were solved. I have known Neil Kelly Remodelers and Martha Kerr for many years and have seen her design many, many jobs to rave reviews. Neil Kelly has a following of repeat customers because of the attention they pay to every detail and the care they deliver to their customers. And as a custom recycled glass products manufacturer I can say Neil Kelly is progressive in bringing new green products to home design and remodeling. Way to go Martha! I cannot say enough good things about Neil Kelly and the angel who helped design my kitchen, Robin Fisher. We ripped out a very large kitchen and started from scratch. We even moved a wall. Robin listened to what I liked about my old kitchen and what I hated about it. She asked many questions about how we cooked, our entertaining style, how we wanted our new kitchen to function, and what we wanted it to look like. Her initial design was very close to perfect. We spent the next few months refining details, looking at appliances, counter top materials/colors, etc. Robin was with us every step of the way. Everything she suggested was right on. And she knows how to properly light a kitchen! Robin and Neil Kelly made this stressful process so much easier than it could have been. They were always there for us, answering questions, minimizing the disruption to our lives, handling the contractors, and making sure things got done on time. I could not be happier with my new kitchen and the way the job got done. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't go to anyone else. Pros: These people know what they are doing.
