Great Food 8/12/2008

When we first arrived, 15 minutes earlier than our reservation; the hostess seemed to ignore us and seated several people ahead of us. I thought she was very rude. I got the pork chop which was wonderful and my boyfriend had the chicken and we were both very happy with our selections. The noise level was too loud for a small restaurant and I didn't think the wait staff seemed very friendly. Our waitress didn't speak up over the loud background, so we never heard a word she said to us (when she decided to come to our table). The wine was over priced but very good and the salad and dessert were great as well! Although service is something extremely important with any restaurant, the food was wonderful and I enjoyed watching staff go to their gardens to pick fresh vegetables. With a more polite and attentive staff, I would have given this restaurant a perfect score but it is worth the visit! Pros: Menu changes frequently with great specials and food presentations Cons: tables very close together more

Unfortunately, the horrible service overshadowed the otherwise good food. 4/22/2008

Good Choice In Napa But There Are Better Choices Overall 9/4/2007

I live within minutes of Napa. For the last twenty years I've been dining at various Napa restaurants. Some very TOURIST oriented and some geared towards locals. Mustard's Grill on Hwy 29 in the Napa Valley (not downtown Napa) is a very good choice worth 3 or 4 stars. It's very crowded. Always. Not because of the food (although very good) but overall its level of food quality, service and its atmosphere. Expect a above-average noise level. That's one of its perks in that it is energy loaded. I still think lunch is best at Mustard's (over dinner). I like the fact that the owner (she has two other Napa restaurants... 'Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen' and 'Go Fish') has created a menu that meets almost all budgets without goughing you as some Napa restaurants can do. Sandwiches are approx; $12 and lunch entrees come in at about $19. What is in error with the restaurants menus is that a simple bottle of local wine has a 200-300% markup. That's not fair to locals or tourists and many other Napa restaurants at least provide what I'd call a entry-level wine at least. Someone in another review here said that the restaurant had a snob appeal to it and while we are blessed and very proud of not only Napa but the pure beauty of Northern California overall, I'd rate the snob appeal of Mustard's Grill as non-existant. A $10 bottle of Napa or Sonoma wine can be as elegant as a $100 bottle of Napa/Sonoma wine. Just down Highway 29 in Napa Valley you'll also find many other good choices very similar to Mustard's Grill including Rutherford's Grill (excellent and casual), Hurley's (simple and good), BRIX, next to Mustard's Grill and a bit more upscale and pricey and Bouchon's (French and worth every expensive dime you'll spend). You can't be successful in the very competitive Napa market without quality overall. Mustards's Grill meets all the requirements of being very successful. Pros: Location, Quality, Price Cons: Severe wine price markups more

Reservations buy nothing 11/7/2006

After asking for a confirmation callback 48 hrs befor arrival you would think it was for a reason. Upon arrival the hostess did not bother to check when told and proceeded to sit us at a less desirable table where I would dine with a pillar next to me. When I asked to move she sat us at another table in even less desirable section. There was a nice table for two which I asked about but was ignored. Most first class restaurants would have seated us here having made and confirmed reservations. Food and other service was very good and reasonable but the hostess was rude, unresponsive and unfriendly which reflected poorly on the restaurant. Pros: Good food with attractive presentation, easy parking, reasonable price Cons: Poor service, value of reservations more

Great food but...... 8/2/2006

My husband and I live in Colorado so when we went to Napa we wanted a great dining experience, we sort of got it at Mustards. We had made a reservation and was promptly seated which was nice considering it was packed on a Saturday evening. However once seated it started to go downhill from there. The service is BAD,BAD BAD, there I said it. The server was rude and acted like we were annoying her by requesting water with our drinks and God Forbid, she looked at us like we had landed from Mars when we requested a beer and a cocktail instead of wine. Now I realize in Napa you are in the heart of wine country, but we had been wine tasting all afternoon and just wanted something other than wine at that point. The cocktail I ordered was sent back twice because it wasn't right and this wasn't some complicated drink. The food was wonderful and so is the setting, but the management really needs to train the waitstaff to be more friendly. Pros: Lovely food, great atmosphere, loved the garden!!! Cons: Unfriendly, rude waitstaff more

What Sevice? 5/30/2006

Had similar experience as others. Was told our group of 8 would be sat at two four tops together. Waited 90 minutes and another group that came after us was sat at one of the four tops that we waited for. The other half of our group was sat across the room. The other group said they would switch but the manager refused. Just the usual Napa Snobbery. The place was packed, so why give anyone good service? Anyone can manage a Restaurant when it's empty! Went to Sonoma and had dinner at at "Willi's". They were crowded but we still got good service. What a concept!! Pros: Good Food Cons: Service(Management) more

Decent Food, HORRIBLE SERVICE 5/15/2006

Ate at Mustard's for the second time. Both times the service was VERY bad The first time, the hostess skipped over us for a table, we waited for an hour, and refused to admit it she'd made a mistake. This time she (same girl) set our table for two (party of four) and then when I corrected her, she snootily informed me that the reservation was only made for 2. I saw the screen correctly said 4. What happened to the customer always being right? And we were seated late, even though we had a reservation. The staff is arrogant, and unnattentive. The waiter served our food and did not come back to check on us. We had to ask other waitstaff for water, coffee, etc. Food is good, but I will not go again. It would be in their interest to hire some more staff. Pros: decent food, decent food Cons: staff is awful!, very noisy more

Lives Up To Hype 4/23/2006

It is easy to knock on places with legacies like Mustards, but the bottomline is they still put out excellent food with excellent service in a fun atmosphere. Nothing beats their Niman Ranch cheeseburger with dijon. Other stand outs include hand cut pork chops, pan seared duck breast and nut crusted grilled halibut. Mustards' wine and beer list is one of the best in the valley. Enjoy one of the excellent beer or wine choices while you wait for a table Pros: cheeseburger, wine and beer list, service Cons: wait more

User review by martinihater 1/28/2006

50$ for a TGI Fridays joint... Ordered the BBQ Ribs and they were dry, charred and tasted awful. I ordered a bottle of beer and my waitress kindly poured it for me and then walked away as it spilled over. I was seated in the corner near the door and felt as though I was being avoided by my waitress who was much more focused on the older party of six who had ordered a bottle of wine. I could only force down one rib. The sly bus boy, who was surely taught to quickly clear insultingly uneaten food away, did his job perfectly. This place was awful, skip this one. Pros: Good Parking Cons: Service, Food, Price more

Blah, blah, blah... 11/13/2005

My husband and I refer to Mustards as the TGI Fridays of Napa Valley. It's just average. Average food, average service, average drinks... After eating at some of the other places in Yountville, Mustards was a let down. Don't waste you time if you are in Napa Valley for a short time. Pros: Easy Reservations Cons: It's so boring more

great food w/spectacular services 3/23/2005

i recently visited napa valley for vacation,we went to all the different winery's it was spectacular. something my wife has never experienced being she never left the island of guam. we were taken to mustards grill for lunch, my cousin who lives in farfield mustards is her favorite rest. i really enjoyed the service and food, the next time i visit california i'll be back at mustard you can bet on that. Pros: food excellent, portions great, service advice deligh Cons: seating little tight more

Mustards Grill? Yes!!! 7/25/2004

The greatness of all great restaurants is shown in the details. If the chefs paid enough attention to the minor things, like side dishes, the main ingredient would never be sub-par. The pickled red cabbage that came with the pork chop was home made (not the canned stuff), and was the most delicious I had ever eaten. The simple dish of lemon and garlic chicken was unbelievably excellent. It looked like deep fry but it wasn't. The juices flowed right out when it's cut. Mustards Grill is a typical American restaurant, but some of their dishes, like fried calamari and seared ahi tuna, are more or less fusion, and they were also excellent. Pros: Great in all areas more

An excellent experience! 6/20/2003

Mustard's Grill was our first meal on our vacation to the Napa Valley. It came highly recommended by the hotel concierge. It was by far the best meal we had in all of the Napa Valley and San Francisco. We ate at many nice restaurants, but the food here was by far the best. All four of us had the Vietnamese Lettuce Wraps and the Mongolian Pork Chop. This is the best place I've eaten in quite some time. The crowds there proved it. Pros: Excellent Food, Small Place, Nice Interior Cons: Can be crowded more

A Napa Valley Favorite 5/15/2002

It's no wonder this restaurant's cookbook just won a James Beard Award...Mustards is home to soulfully prepared, full-bodied and earthy food. The preparations are very straightforward and show off the best in local produce. Wines, as one might expect, are a strong point. And don't miss the legendary cheesecake when dessert rolls around. Pros: wine selection more

  • Named after the mustard flowers that bloom in Napa's vineyards every spring, this bustling, window-lined roadside restaurant is where hoardes of hungry vacationers come for all-American grilled goodness. International inspirations for Chef Cindy Pawlcyn, previous winner of the James Beard Award for Best Americana Cookbook, are instantly recognized on the appetizer menu of small plates: sweet corn tamales, Vietnamese lettuce wraps and calamari with curried slaw. Likewise, main courses run the gamut--from the "famous" Mongolian pork chop (over 4 million sold, thank you very much) to the Sonoma rabbit with Mexican chocolate-chili sauce--yet still taste like down-home cooking. For something sweet, look no further than the ever-popular lemon-lime tart, a towering slice of pie with the biggest meringue (made with brown sugar, not white) you've ever seen. Really. It's that big.
