Run don't walk away from here. I have been going there for years with both our dog and cats and the service and care has down way down hill. They are extremely over-priced and expect to wait a lot, before, during and after the appt. They seem to make-up whatever suits them ie: we are the only ones who can fill the prescription, this is the only option for treatment and "by law, you can't have your pet's remains, you have to pay us to depose of the body." \r \r Don't let them take your pet to the back alone for tests. The assistants are well meaning but pointed out the wrongs lumps to test, two out of three times.\r \r They extracted our dog's tooth and broke off 2 of the 3 roots and said nothing when we returned for repeated swelling/infection in our dog's face. They just keep prescribing antibiotic over and over. We did go elsewhere and the 1st thing the new vet said was let's check for a broken root! He had to have extensive surgery to correct this as the pieces of tooth had migrated through the bone.\r \r We used to board our dog with them and in the last year our pet came back in worse shape than when we left him - skin infections, no medication consumed for days - they charged $4.00 a pill to toss the pill in with his dry food twice a day and were surprised to find the pills in his cage days later. \r \r The front desk staff seems to always be new and not yet trained. But you have to argue with the manager when they charge you for something the staff told you was ""no-charge."" They often forget to include everything when you leave. So you have to come back and get the rest of the medications.\r \r Check what they tell you and where they refer you or you'll pay through the nose and it could jeopardize you pet. It's a struggle to get your records sent to other doctors. The attitude toward clients is not good, expect to be put on-hold/hung up on most of the time.\r \r more

I am going to keep this short but Muir Oaks provides some of the most repulsive service I have ever seen in my days as an animal lover. My family has two cats and two dogs. All are old or aging and require vet care on a regular basis. \r \r We started going to Muir Oaks in October of 2007 and stopped going there in January of 2009 because we were treated like crap by staff over a $50 charge for bringing our dog back in for a re-check. I have never been charged for a re-check on services received previously but leave it to the extortionists at Muir Oaks to charge me for the re-check without mentioning there was a charge. I brought my dog in and left without paying because I did not think there was a charge. It was only when I returned for another visit that I learned I had a overdue balance that was accruing interest. I never returned again unfortunately my husband had to recently return because we needed a vet on the weekend and Muir Oaks was the only place that was open and avail more

I had a family emergency and took my dog and cat to Muir Oaks Hospital. \r \r Upon returning to pick them up - approximately one week later - I was informed that my cat "lucky" had gotten sick and had the runs. The girl explained they cleaned her the best they could. They brought Lucky out in her carrier and sat her on the counter.\r \r The cost for both the dog and cat was $300. which I thought was a bit steep. I paid the bill and went home. \r \r Upon taking Lucky out of her carrier I noticed large "nickel sized" pieces of dried feces all over her tail and rear legs. I was LIVID! I immediately called to speak with someone regarding sending a pet home in that condition. \r \r The young girl said she was the one in charge at the monment. She would not have a doctor return my call until Monday. This was Sunday. I then started taking my cat, and then we rescued a chuhuahua and paid $750 to have her spayed at this place (probably at least 25% higher than any other local vet) But again, it's just money and the pets are worth it. Well after $4225 (yes I reconciled it) I had a problem with my dog bear on Sunday the 13th and I immediately remembered that Muir oaks is open, so I call in a panic since my dog is coughing up blood! The lady who answers the phone trying to shake me from the first word out of her mouth "There's 2 calls ahead of you... are you sure you would like to wait!!" Almost with an angry "I dont want to be here" tone. So I wait about 2 minutes and she returns and I let her know I need to get my dog in and explai more

I have used Muir Oaks for over 3 years until just recently. I always heard that it was more expensive than all the other local vets, but I never really knew how much.\r \r FIRST COMPLAINT: I brought my 16 year old mini-poodle (I inherited) in for a dislocated hip and got the very uncomfortable insinuation that since the vet (Herder) couldn't understand how the poodle dislocated her hip, that I somehow had to have kicked the dog! I was completely offended, but more in shock as this woman knew me not at all--and still made her thinly veiled insinuation. \r \r She didn't know me, because I had already been through 3 vets in the past 12 months--apparently Muir Oaks cannot hold onto their vets, so there is no chance that you will be able to form a bond with your pet's caregiver, nor will that vet get to know your pet...unacceptable.\r \r Then, a procedure to put my dog's leg back into the correct position was estimated at $600 including anesthesia...OK I guess that's what it costs. Recently I took my sick cat to this hospital to find out what is wrong with him(i.e. he kept falling over and running into things). The doctors there were very helpful and tried their best to figure out what was wrong with him. Even though they tried really hard to diagnose him, he ended up going to a Specialist instead. The doctors there seemed really concerned about my cat and talked to me and asked relevant questions.\r \r In addition, I did have some initial difficulties with one of the vet techs there. She was acting unprofessional (i.e. raising her voice at one of my other cats when she took her in the back room), and the doctors took care of that situation right away. They even called me to discuss how to better my future appointments. more

I have taken my cats to Muir Oaks since 2002. Dr. Herder has been very thorough with my diabetic cat's meds and tests. I have always been treated fairly and politely. There have been a couple of occasions where we had to wait longer than usual, which was due to an animal emergency.\r All you have to do is speak up and tell them what your financial situation is and have only tests that are truly needed. There was a turn over in staff when they moved into the new building, but I think it's stable now and staff are more comfortable with the procedures. I had to take one of my cats in for a seizure and she was quickly brought in and evaluated and treated. I feel they do the best for the animals. When another one of my pets passed away, they sent me a condolence card and made a donation to the UC Davis Animal Companion Program in memory of my pet. I thought that was very thoughtful. We have been bringing our puppy here for his shots, and the Dr. was very knowledable about puppies and the wait time is not very long. We just boarded our puppy here as well, would recommend this vet if you are looking for quality over pricing for a vet, for your animals. Pros: Good service, can bring for vet, boarding, grooming or emergency servcies Cons: Some of the vet techs lack some luster, but thats just personal preference more

I was recently referred by a friend since my last Vet was horrible I decided to give Muir Oaks a chance.The facility is beautiful and very clean;receptionists were very polite; rooming nurse was very sweet and had a lot of medical and nutrition advice.Dr.Utt was my Vet and she was amazing!...I will definetly bring my pets in for more services in the future. more

i was referred to this vet by someone who has also changed their views on how they work.1. i brought my cat in who has suffered from an eye injury since birth. i was told there was absolutely nothing wrong with her. she is now seeing another vet who does have her on eye treatment to stop her eye bleeding.2. i brought my dog in for shots and an exam and was charged for a fecal exam that never happened. we had also turned down this exam. it took two phone calls and an argument with the office manager to take this of my bill.3.i had a renewal prescription filled out for our dog. the doctor called and said it was done and ready to be picked up at the front desk. We stopped by after calling to confirm i was coming, and they then told me there was no such prescription. We were made to wait an hour until someone could get this sorted out. during this hour of waiting, one person walked out with her dog and said she could not believe she was made to wait 2 hours when she had an appointment. i e more

My family has been taking various pets over the years to Muir Oaks. I was with them at their old location with my parents, and I am with them now at their new location with my husband, puppy and cat. When my husband and I got our puppy last year, we discovered the hard way that our puppy is very sensitive to injections and reacts to most of them. We were calling the clinic all the way up till 9pm at night with concerns about how puppy was reacting. Being first time, nervous parents, the clinic staff was great. They have also been wonderful in working with us to find alternative solutions to injections since he reacts to them so strongly.\r \r I'm sorry that other people have had problems with the clinic. But as a long time customer, I have always been happy with the staff and doctors! more

Find another vet unless money is no object. We went there based on reviews from this and other sites when we were new to the area, and they were very close. Everytime my wife goes in, they try and sell her services and extra's not at all relatedto her current visit, or the animals they are currently looking at. She has left everytime felt like been acosted, and had to pay for it! The care is good, but quality care and the same meds can be found much cheaper elsewhere. We will not be taking any of our pets back there. more

I have been going to Muir Oaks for about 1 1/2 yrs. We recently\r lost a cat in Sept to heart failure and Muir Oaks did everything\r they could to help him. I brought him to nursing care since he would not eat and they hand fed him and fell in love.\r Every night I picked him up and they just raved about him.\r \r Dr. Herder is my vet. She can be cool at first but you \r just have to get to know her. She is a very nice lady and a good vet.\r When we had our sick cat there she worked with other vets to brainstorm on ideas for making Mao better. She called all the time.\r We had to put him down due to to much pain (heart condition was \r well advanced when i first brought him in). Dr. Herder sent a nice\r condolence card to my home afterwards. I since have 3 cats and 1 dog going to Muir. Muir is a good clinic.\r I know all the front staff. Some of the girls working up front\r do it for a summer job. Every job has turnover. \r \r The new doctor Dr C is great too. I have no negs to say about Muir. Good more

We have two dogs we've brought in to this clinic on several occasions for regular issues and emergencies both. The helpful attitude of the staff and doctors both have always been outstanding. I was sorry to read the review of Ms. N, in fact troubled, but I have never had anything close to the experience that she did with this vet. more

I've been searching for the perfect place to take my recently rescued pit/lab mix, and I've found it in Muir Oaks. The receptionists were helpful and I was called in almost immediately. I saw Dr. Nelsen, who was great. She was so down to earth and explained everything so I understood. I've never had such a positive experience with any doctor, human or animal alike! The assistants were lovely, too, and seemed very well informed. I did spend more than I had intended, but I know my Sophie got the best care possible. more

I have had nothing but positive experiences at Muir Oaks so far. I have been a client for about 1 year and in that time all three of my pets have been seen. I have seen most of the doctors there, but Dr Nilsen is my current doctor. \r \r I have never had a problem with the prices. I feel that if you want the best, state-of-the-art, AAHA ACCREDITED hospital to work with your pets, you have to pay a little more than if you went to a run down, dirty, smelly clinic with old school doctors and old school practices. There are so many advances in animal medicine just like in human medicine and the doctors have to run tests in order to be able to diagnose and treat the animals. I feel that when I take my pets here, they get the same care that I would get going to my own doctor. \r \r As for the person with the "docile persian" cat, if the cat bit the doctor, why were you surprised he bit the groomer.
