My Favorite!!! The Best Restaurant in Sacramento!! 11/10/2010

Moxie is my absolute favorite place to go for a nice dinner. i've been a customer since they opened up here in town in the mid-late 90's and have made it a special place to go for my birthday, a family celebration or a romantic dinner with my husband. The food is consistently excellent, the portions are more than generous, the presentation is always lovely, the variety and selection is wonderful. Through my work, I have the opportunity to dine at the best (and not so best) restaurants in town, and I think that Moxie is by far the most enjoyable place to dine. The overall experience is always wonderful. The owners, Adam and Bill, are one of a kind (as a team of owners) and will bring a unique experience to your meal...the environment is quaint, unassuming and relaxed. I have never been disappointed after leaving Moxie and always want to go back for more. I have only one complaint about this establishment....that they're not open for lunch! Maybe someday they will be again...I hope they do!!! more

want to add to above review! 3/7/2009

First time was this last news years eve. It was fabulous! 2nd time on my birthday in Jan. it was fabulous!! 3rd time just this last weekend I took out of town people it was fabulous!!! It is our new favorite place. excellent food and amount of food for the money. great atmosphere. the whole experience is more like entertainment then ""just going out for dinner"". The out of town people that I took absolutely loved it said it was the highlight of their trip to Sac. They've eaten all over the country and out of the country and said it was one of their best experiences! Some good friends of ours took their whole family there last night and couldn't say enough about it. My friend said the lamb was the very best she's ever had. I don't know whats going on with the couple of bad reviews I read below, when there are only a couple bad reviews among the great reviews, I have to think it's something wrong with reviewers!!!! more

IF You ONLY Have One Night In Sacramento Dine Here!!! 8/28/2008

This was among the five best dining experiences I have had in 40 years of world travel. If you are near then you owe it to yourself to go and enjoy the evening. I have NEVER posted a review before and probably won't again. THIS WAS SPECIAL. If you like lamb you must have the tenderloin if on the special list. Pros: Quality ingredients Knowledable Friendly Staff more

Repeated great experiences 7/13/2008

I have ben to Moxie 4 times, and they have been among the top dining experiences of my life. My husband still favors Biba, but I think Moxie has great food, great character and atmosphere. We usually eat on the early side (5:30-6:30), so have never had a too-busy, overcrowded experience. One time they let us come in and have a glass of wine at 5pm because we had a show to go to, and they didn't open until 5:30. It was a wonderful touch. The photos on the walls add to the experience for anyone into photography. Pros: People, atmosphere, easy parking more

Great Food and alot of fun. 3/14/2008

I brought my wife here after looking online for something different than the typical place. The Moxie was a pleasant find that hides in a different but safe part of town and is behind a little red door (I think it was red). more

Funky atmosphere, service and food. 3/11/2008

Moxie is dark and dingy, it smells funny inside with bad ventilation and the music was tacky and too loud. The food was alright. For all this place is hyped up to be, it isn't very good. I went with 4 other friends that share the same sentiments. For a much nicer experience check out Biba, Aoili Bodega, or The Waterboy. Remeber, this is the opinion of 5 people and we are comparing Moxie with the likes of the above mentioned restaurants and excellent dining opportunities in Berkeley, Oakland and San Francisco. I do have high food standards. My point is not to bash Moxie, but for me the truth is it's not good. That's that, take my word or don't, it's just my opinion! Happy eating! Pros: charismatic waiters that remember huge daily specials lists Cons: smells, arogant stuck-up cocky waiters, so so food, awful ambiance more

Utterly Reprehensible 3/1/2008

An absolutely terrible experience. We had a Friday night reservation for two at 7:30 pm (set up several days in advance) and were not seated until around 8:10. Meanwhile, several parties who came in after us, that that wait staff seemed to know by name, were seated well before us. Once seated it was another 15 minutes or so before anyone took interest in getting an order from us (though we had about 45-55 minutes to review the menu at that point). Pros: Food smelled good; if I hadn't walked out I could say more Cons: Rude service, worst I've experienced at a restaraunt in my life more

Moxie has, for many years, been our favorite Sacramento restaurant 12/31/2007

Our family has been going to Moxie for many years, since it opened. It is everything a restaurant should be: great and diverse food, superb service and wonderful, ""bistro"" atmosphere. Adam and Bill, the owners, have become friends over the years. From the moment you walk in, you're made to feel you're a special guest. One of the highlights is hearing the servers' verbal recitation of the numerous ""specials."" (Specials is really a misnomer, since the written menu is short and sweet; while what's listed there is all very good, the number of specials--appetizers and main courses alike--available on any given evening dwarfs the menu listings, and should be the focus of your attention.) While we normally go with family and friends, I've also done several business lunches and dinners at Moxie over the years. Invariably, my work colleagues are hooked, and often wind up as steady customers themselves. In short, it's all VERY good! more

Great Customer Service 12/20/2007

We dined at Moxie for a business holiday dinner and it was fabulous. The 2 men that run the place are awsome and informed! It couldn't have been more pleasant. The menu is just the beginning. There are so many specials and if what you want isn't included, they will make what you want! The wine was great and the atmosphere cozy. Even though the restaurant was filled with people, we felt that we had privacy and intimacy at our table and were able to converse easily. The prices were entirely reasonable for what you recieve! What a great experience, will be back, that is for sure! Pros: There are no cons to this place! more

Absolutely beautiful 10/24/2007

Greeted and seated by someone who knows what service is all about.I was visiting a friend in Sacramento and Moxie was refered by one of her friends so we gave it a shot. The ambiance is set perfectlty for taking out in my case a special lady. The wine we ordered unlike anyhthng I've tried before.I ordered the Filet Mignon from our waiters mental menu that was nothing short of impressive,he read through it forward and backwards adding a flare of style unmatched by any restaraunt I've ever been to.I recomend this place to any and everyone.Beautiful setting, perfectly hidden in the neighborhood,A truly unique dining experience and between my company, the service and the food...worth every pennie I spent. Pros: The cozy bar, lenghty wine list, dimly lit, entertaining and talented employees Cons: Not a thing more

MOST UNEXPECTED SURPRISE!! 10/17/2007

My husband and I recently went to Moxie for an anniversary dinner in Sept. We were very happy with our experience. The service was AMAZING and the food even better! Not many fine dining restrauants do you actually get a real plate of food!! We started off with the stuffed mushrooms that were out of this world and went on to have Sea Bass and Lamb that did not dissapoint! The atomosphere was just what we wanted and not to loud or bright. I would reccomend this place to anyone that is looking for a nice romantic off the beaten path place!!! Thanks to Moxie for such a memorable night!!! Pros: Quite, service and the food was amazing! Cons: Not in a ""trendy area"" more

Best restaurant I've been to - ever! 6/11/2007

For a very special occasion, I was escorted for the first time to Moxie's for my birthday. I had the Sea Bass, one of my very favorites and one the many specials they had that evening. My partner had the Veal and I must say both meals were devine. They describe every detail of the preparation and if you would rather have something another way or on the side, they are very flexible and want you to have everything to your taste. Listening to the menu is almost as good as actually eatnig all the food, it all sounds so interesting and delicious! The wine list is extensive and terrific, the service first rate. The owners were there near the door, meeting and greeting and very congenial, ensuring everyone felt welcomed. I have often dreamed of having an intimate, romantic and friendly place to go like this for special occasions, and now I have a favorite. It won't be long until we return. Pros: Romantic, Intimate, Ecletic menu, Decor Cons: Parking can be difficult at times, small, dimly lit restroom more

One of Sacramento's best 3/30/2007

I have had bad luck dinning in Sacramento but this little hole in the wall is a gem! The service on Friday and Saturday leaves much to be desired; however, it is easily forgivable as the food is wonderful, atmosphere is great, and the wine is plentiful! Just be sure to make your reservations in advance. Pros: Good food and ambiance Cons: Service is sparce on the weekends more

not typical...relax & enjoy the ride! 1/3/2007

Many friends of mine describe Moxie as their absolute favorite restaurant for special occassions. My wife & I went for an anniversary dinner. Ironically, the menu was surpisingly plain - until the server (owner?) started to describe the specials - appetizers specials, entree specials, dessert specials...etc. The real menu here is described by the server and gives you a run down of just about every cut of meat & fish you might want, plus a number of sauces & sides that you can essentially mix & match. The food was very well prepared, the ambiance quiet & comfortable and the overall experience will bring us back. Pros: put the menu down, enjoy one of the many nightly specials more

Great food, attentive service 10/26/2006

My husband took me here for my birthday on October 7 (a Saturday). Even though we had reservations, we still had about a 20 minute wait for a table. However, the owner saw us seated at the bar and served us each a glass of wine while we waited. The food was delicious, but what stood out most was the attentive staff. They were very prompt with everthing but never intrusive. Also, they had so many specials we had to ask them to repeat the list several times. Pros: food, service, ambiance Cons: long wait even with reservations, cramped tables more

great food with attitude 10/2/2006

going again tonight...enjoy the ambiance. Years ago I was sparring with one of the owners( big moustache) and questioned the cheese cake supposedly made by his mother. So with an attitude he returned with the phone, dialed his Ma and handed me the phone! Yeah, Ma makes the cheese cake. The food has always been great and hey, if your not happy, open your mouth and speak! I own a business and always want the customer to let me know if somethings not up to snuff. I really enjoy the loin of lamb and the seafood pasta. more

All around good time 8/19/2006

I'm originally from the East Coast, and pretty new to the area. I was pleased to find a place that looks like it has been around for three-generations (it is actually 11 years), but still takes a modern approach to food. Pros: Extensive specials, great service Cons: A little small...call if you have a group larger than four more

true disappointment 4/4/2006

Our experience started out so well, but just ended in disappointment. The appettizer and salad excited us, but afterwards it went all down hill. The good service didn't make up for the poor meal. The beef short ribs were excellent - tender and delicate with a strong garlic-honey favor (maybe too much sugar). The ceasar salad was delicious with a wonderful olive oil. Everything seemed set for a great meal, but then we had the fish - salmon and chilean sea bass. Although the fishes were very well cooked and presented, the quality of the fish were poor! The salmon was dry and too fishy, the sea bass was dry with a vacuum-packed frozen fish taste. To quench the awful fishy taste in our mouths, we tried the the chocolate mousse cake only to have it taste like it just came out of deep-freeze. Truly disappointing. Pros: service Cons: value, bad fish more

The best restaurant in Sacramento!! 3/10/2006

This place has the best of everything - great food, unparalleled service, and the best ambiance around. It's fabulous for date dinners and special occasions as it's VERY romantic. The service is unbelievably friendly and acommodating. I don't know why anyone would rate this restaurant anything but the best - unless they are only into trendy places. PLEASE check this place out if you like best-kept-secret kind of places. The owners take great pride in making everyone feel like a part of the family. I will go here for all of my special occasions! A MUST!!! Pros: ambiance, food, service more

Never Again 2/23/2006

Very disapointing experience for me and my girlfriend. We waited one hour for the appetizers to arrive. Our water barely got refilled. When th entree finally arrived, most of the food was cold and the traditional veal scaloppini was anything but traditional. For a place that prides itself on having so many specials you would expect them to be over the top and beyond. more
