Wonderful location in Moss Beach, practically right on the ocean. The view is fantastic. The place has a lot of ambriance owing to the fact it was built in the early part of the 2...

So we went there on a recommendation saying the view was nice, good food, etc. The view was nice, and the brunch menu was tasty. But I would never go back mainly because it was ...

Paranormally a big disappointment... 6/4/2008

After watching the television broadcast of Ghost Hunters this evening, it was disappointing to see that the distillery is rigged with devices to attract visitors that would enjoy paranormal events, they not knowing that these devices were put there, ""knowingly"" by your establishment...a device in the women's bathroom that sets off a ""woman's laughter"", a ""glowing face"" behind the restroom mirror, chandelier's moving due to a device also bringing that about...I enjoy watching that team of hardworking paranormal investigators, proving or disproving paranormal events on locations they travel to...did you think they were there for a little ""fun house"" investigation???, and why wasn't it initially brought to their attention that these items were rigged ???...did you not think that they would further investigate and find out your farce ???...these are intelligent individuals, that DO their job very well...I had lived in California for over 47 years, and due to your deceptiveness, I will never visit your distillery/restaurant, nor recommend it to others to visit...I wouldn't put it past the establishment to rigging up a white sheet by the cliff's edge at night, shine a blue beacon/light upon it, and there you have it, it's your famous ""Blue Lady""...the management/owner of Moss Point Distillery/Restaurant definitely has egg upon their face this evening, and well deserving of it... more

Ghost is Bogus 6/4/2008

I have not eaten here but reviews that I've read have not been good. Most state that food is nothing special and is over priced. There are several reviews that are very good which I assume were written by someone that is attached to the restaurant due to the attempts to glorify the ""so-called"" ghost by calling out the TAPS team to investigate and hopefully validate their claims. Anyone that watched the Ghost Hunter show that aired on June 04, 2008 got to see that these claims are false and that the restaurant has been rigged to appear haunted in an attempt to attract people to come and eat there. I have no choice but to think that the food can not stand on it's ownf and that they are having to resort to gimmicks which I personally find to be insulting. The executive chef should be embarrassed by his attempt to decieve and for this I will never visit this estabishment. This was a nice try to get some free advertising that back fired in a major way. more

Talk about a turnaround! 3/17/2007

My wife and I have been coming to the Moss Beach Distillery for years (we got engaged on the beach just north of the distillery) and have always loved the view, the ghost story, the rockin' cocktails, and snuggling up under the wool blankets on the patio. The romantic granduer of the coastline view at sunset is truly remarkable on a beautiful day. Plus, the history and the slightly old-fashioned charm have always held our interest -- the place used to be a speakeasy and rum-smuggling drop-off in the 20's! After a couple of disappointing visits (food overpriced and lackluster service) last year we stopped coming with any regularity. Pros: killer view, excellent fresh food, history, ghost story Cons: can be very busy, reservations on weekend night critical more

Really disappointing 9/16/2006

This used to be one of out favorite restaurants and now they have succeeded in over-pricing themselves. I was not sure if it was because we went on a Monday afternoon, but the dining room was closed and we had to order at the bar. No big deal since we were going outside to enjoy the view and cuddle up in the blankets. However, over $30 for a couple bowls of clam chowder and one order of fries? Give me a break. Their food isn't that great and the view isn't worth the price. If it wasn't a special week for us, I would have walked out. This will be our last time. Pros: The view Cons: Everything else, highly over-priced, poor service more

What a shame... 9/9/2006

This was once one of my favorite jaunts to visit to unwind from the city stress. I've sat outide even during rain to enjoy the once edible food and drinks. On my last visit my experience was so terrible that I am never going back to this place again. I ordered ""The fish Platter"" which I expected to have an array of delcious assortments of seafood to enjoy but what arrived was a greasy over cooked and undefinable mess. I ate two bites and then tossed it. What was even worse was their calamari. It tasted like the cooks forgot to change the oil in weeks and was in a puddle of oil. Disgusting. What was the most infuriating was that we bought those two poor exuses for food and a couple of pints of beer and our bill was $71.00??? We shelled out over seventy bucks for garbage on picnic flatware and an arrogant bartender to boot. We decided to fill out a comment card and give it to the manager in hopes they would reconcile our problem with even our phone numbers and email addresses included and they did nada. I even contacted their website's events manager to get satisfaction and it just seems like they just don't give a damn. What a shame to ruin such a cool place. It is now IMHO just a lousy tourist trap with over priced and inedible food and attitude. Wow.... Pros: Great view..that's it.. Cons: You name it, they've failed more

Tourist Trap Wastes Great Setting 8/9/2006

It's hard to believe now, but for years, this was one of the greatest locals places anywhere--great food, great view, relaxed atmosphere. I used to go there 2-3 times a week! I had my wedding reception there, as did a number of my friends. It felt that comfortable. About ten years ago, the current greedhead owner bought the place and pretty clearly had an agenda to turn the place into a tourist haven. He succeeded--shamelessly promoting the ghost, raising prices, assembly-lining the food, hiring arrogant, pretty boy bartenders, and rushing diners to ""turn over ""the tables faster, and utterly robbing the place of its character. The ocean view is still there, but the view ain't worth it. This is now the worst restaurant on the coast. Don't go. Don't ever go. I live four blocks away and haven't been there in 10 years. Pros: view Cons: food, service, management more

We were asked to leave! 2/21/2006

How excited I was to take two of my friends from out of town here the eve of 02/18/06. First I had to reserve the table with a credit card and we were warned not to be late. We arrived on time, the food was average and very expensive and 10 min after I paid the bill we were asked to vacate our table so the next people could get in!! Never have I paid over $150 for a meal and been asked to leave before finishing my coffee! Please don't patronize a place that only cares about getting the next table seated. Pros: View before dark Cons: Rude service, Overpriced! more

Good Place to Stop and Eat 1/10/2006

I've been to the Moss Beach Distillery several times, and the experiences has been fantastic. The coquile de mar and cider brined pork are my favorites. The patio is an awsome place to get a Margarita and watch the sunset. The atmosphere is fun and a lot less stuffy then what you typically get in the City. Overall, it is always a great time. Pros: Patio, View, Food Cons: out of the way, loud, bar crowded more

Perfect Date Place 1/10/2006

I took my girlfriend to the restaurant and we both loved it. We both loved the food, and are planning a trip back to the coast soon just to go to this restaurant. Not only is the food amazing the views are even better. I have recommended this restaurant to serveral of my friends. Pros: Wonderful food, good service, great views Cons: n/a, n/a, n/a more

Fabulous Restaurant 1/9/2006

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the bay area. The food is fabulous as well as the service and the views are great. What more could you want in a restaurant. My friends and I always have a good time when we visit the restaurant, whether it is for lunch or dinner. Pros: Food, Views, Service Cons: none, none, none more

Your paying for a view and nothing else!!! 1/4/2006

The view drives the prices. When was the last time you say a meatloaf on a menu for $29.00? Or how about this, a restaurant where most menu items run around $30.00 on average and water is served only by request. There is also a $25.00 minimum dining charge per person excluding alcohol. The restaurant is frequented by tourists who will probably never return thus the lack of service or quality of food. However, if you want a fabulous view and have little concern for service or quality of food this is the spot for you. I recently read the restaurant is going up for sale in January 2006. Lets hope the new owner takes note of the many negative reviews and makes some positive changes. Pros: Location Cons: Overpriced, Quality of food, Quality of service more

Offensive 11/6/2005

What an unbelievable waste of money. First of all, most of the entrees cost upwards of $30, which in the bay area should get you a great gourmet meal. Instead, I nearly found myself laughing when they brought the food out. I swear the corn on the side of the tough, slimey prime rib was from a can. My date's ""halibut"" was a sad, rectangular slab of grey that tasted like it had been doused in sugar in order to disguise the fact that it clearly had been frozen and thawed. Like other reviewers noted, these people aren't relying on repeat customers-- though our service, I must admit, was alright. All in all, everyone in my group walked out feeling like we had just been conned. more

A Great Find 4/26/2005

We stumbled onto the Distillery by complete accident on a business trip to the area. I was extremely pleased with both the food and the service. There is no way to describe the view. The food price was slightly elevated but I felt it was absolutely on par with any other restaurant on the coast and the food can actually hold up to the price. I was so impressed with the whole experience that I have already promised my wife I would take her there for wine and dinner on their patio. Pros: View, Service, Patio more

It was like eating at Denny's 4/12/2005

This restaurant is the biggest TOURIST TRAP! They know they don't rely on repeat business, so they treat their customers like cattle. The busboy tried to clear my plate while I was still eating (literally had the fork in my mouth), our waitress set the bill down in the middle of dessert. We were sat at 4:30 p.m., so there wasn't a desperate need for a table, regardless, we were rushed out of there. The food is mediocre and extremely over priced. The filet mignon was $40.00. The tuna appetizer was of poor grade. The wine list is limited and the markup is outrageous. We could have eaten at the Ritz Carlton for the same price, with better service, and atmosphere. The interior is very shabby too. I understand that it is suppose to be part of its charm, but it really is just grundgy. Cons: Bad Service, Over priced, Shabby conditions more

Recommended 4/7/2005

Just had to throw in my opinion. I love this restaurant and couldn't understand why it would have an overall rating of 8.4 with such poor written reviews. It is a very special place and worth going out of the way for. The view doesn't get any better that this and the service is wonderful. It is one of the most romantic restaurants I've ever been to. Pros: view, food, ghost Cons: pricey more

Very Disappointing 1/27/2003

The menu selection was poor and most of the entrees and appetizers were overpriced (even for the bay area). I got sick about fifteen minutes after eating the salmon. Luckily no one else in my party ate the salmon and had to make repeated visits to the restroom like I did. On the upside, the view is great and we had very good service. Unfortunately I would only recommend this restaurant as a place to go for drinks. Pros: View, Service Cons: Food Quality, Expensive, Menu Selection more

Never again.. ever 5/22/2002

Worst service ever!! I will never go back. We didn't even eat our food because we were so upset at the way we were treated by the bartender and then the girl that claims she was a manager. We ended up down the road and had Tres Amigos Taqueria for 15.45 with a few beers included. The manager of the Distillery charged us over 6 bucks and we didn't even get through the first drink before we walked out. Wouldn't of walked out but the manager was so rude we felt uncomfortable if we would have stayed. They were also asking over 35 bucks for a filet. Also, they offered us a table in the side room because we had kids and they don't even have a waitress on the side. Full menu but the bartender I guess is too lazy to walk around and served the extremely overpriced dinner. Pros: view Cons: bad service, poor management more
