Great food, but service was hit and miss 9/15/2005

We liek to eat at 6pm so we have the full attention of the staff. had the $125 ""Carte Blanche"" tasting menu were the Chef Citrin chooses your courses. started with the incredible Poached egg w/caviar,lemon fraiche, great little trio of lobster, nice sonoma foie gras and terrine combo. However, for the price it would have been nice for both of us to have gotten different dishes. In retropsect, we would have been happier ordering off the standard tasting menu. Also, as it got busier the service declined quite a bit. Several times our courses were delivered by busboys who gave us terrible explanations of the dishes which I could barely understand. It was also my 40th B-day and my girlfreind had called ahead then day before and requested a special dessert which I never got. Overall, not the ""four star"" treatment I expected. Pros: Great food Cons: average desert, bad service more

Best Restaurant In LA 8/18/2005

This is by far hands down the best restaurant in LA. The food is incredible. I have been here ten times and never had a bad dish. the best waiter at the restaurant is David. he is the best waiter I have ever seen. He is so excited about the food and helpful. The Sommelier is incredible. He is friendly informative, and knowledgeable. he makes the whole experience. This chef should be mentioned with the best chefs in the world. If you have any question as to whether or not to go here end them now. I can't imagine reviews where people did not like this place. Pros: everything Cons: decor more

Pricey, but ... 7/10/2005

Josiah, the chef, is an amazing talent. His food is terrific. Never miss the truffle menu when it's in season. It's sublime! Pros: Best food Cons: Decor ... eh more

Incomparable Service, Typical High End French 6/27/2005

If you eat at Melisse, I would recommend David be your waiter. He is one of the best, most knowledgeable, and most accommodating waiters I have experienced. He worked hard to individualize our experience. We all had the prix fixe menu (87) and parts of it were astounding (the truffle crusted lamb, sweet corn ravioli) and parts were bland (halibut, tuna tartare). The optional cheese tray was truly a joy. Although the wine list gave us a lot to be excited about in many price ranges, I was a little underwhelmed by the entire experience. For the price, I should have walked out planning my next visit there for a special occasion, and I cannot say that I will return. Pros: service, wine list, ambiance Cons: price, some food more

French, Done Beautifully 8/17/2004

I went here for my anniversary after Spago had lost my reservation. What a fortuitous accident. When we walked in, they had our table set with two tiny, delicate gold boxes - inside, homemade truffles - and a card from the restaurant. The staff was impeccable, intuitive and completely on their game (especially David - he really personalized the evening for us). The food was amazing, but you really have to enjoy rich french foods and a three hour dinner. The foie gras was my favorite. We ordered the tasting menu, which is the way to go. Everything put in front of you is explained in detail, and the chef comes out and personally greets his guests. It was a truly wonderful experience that I'll never forget. At the end of the night, they played our song...obviously a coincidence, but it was all just so perfect. Pros: excellent service, personal attention, amazing food & wine more

One of the LA's best dining experiences 5/24/2004

Everything I had was great from the scallops to the sweet potato ravioli to the pot-au-feu with black truffles, lobster, and foie gras. Chef Citrin's techniques really shine though. The service is impeccable. The decor also makes for the perfect special occasion place. Pros: Food, Service, Decor more

A Bit Disappointed 12/26/2003

I had been wanting to try this for a long time, and found an opportunity to do so last month. Had lunch with a friend and found the service impeccable, but the food a bit bland. We got a complimentary cold cucumber soup, which I liked, but the fish, although good, lacked taste. The dessert (sorbet) was so-so. The waiters were all very polite and efficient, though, and the place was very elegant. It was full of mostly older people, ladies who lunch, and even celebrities (Billy Joel was there that time). Maybe the dinner menu is better. Pros: Beautiful interiors, Excellent Service, Easy Parking Cons: Bland Food more

too expensive; not worth it 3/8/2003

poor lighting (the waiter used his flashlight to help me with the menu); could barely see the food; seating was fine; not crowded...went here on a saturday night; the wait staff was extremely helpful and courteous. the food was not that great, good, but not outstanding. i've tried JiRaffe, which is owned by a close friend of the owner of Melisse. That place is much better. You can actually see the food, nicer decor (get the upstairs room); service is so-so; my waitress didn't know how to pour wine correctly...spilled some in my sparkling water. Melisse is not a New French restaurant...the menu was very traditional and so was the taste...maybe that's why i didn't like it too much Pros: spacious, service Cons: lighting, food, price more

I cant believe how bad this place is! 2/15/2003

I have never written a review on this site, because I have never had an dining experience that inclined me too....until now. And I eat out every night. I heard through several people that this was the ultimate romantic restuarant in LA. So I took my girlfriend there for Valentines day. What a HUGE mistake. Firstly, it took over a half an hour before someone even acknowledged we were there and another half hour before our wine was brought to the table and we were to order. The food was not even that good. For a $350 dollar bill you would think you would have something redeeming to say. But that I cannot do. I will never ever go there again. I implore you not to waste your time. you get better service at Mcdonalds. Pros: ambience Cons: service, food, bill more

ALWAYS Get the Tasting Menu 12/11/2002

Yes it is Expensive. We know that going in. And are full leaving. We order the tasting menu and are very immpressed. The Maine Scallops and Wild Sea Bass were done to perfection and the vegetables that complimented them were floating in a light sauce that only enhanced the experience. And the CHEESE! Oh the Cheese. If you are a foodie and want an extravagant evening with good food you should go. Pros: Great tasting, Good Service Cons: Expensive more

My favorite - for now 12/10/2002

Gorgeous food. This is just a step below Charlie Trotter and the French Laundry. A little more atttention to detail and they would blow everyone away. Pros: really, really, good more

One of LA's best restaurants 11/18/2002

Absolutely wonderful. Melisse is civilized, classy but low-key, and all about the food. This is not a ""scene"" restaurant. You come here and let your wallet be emptied because the food is some of the best in southern California. If you truly appreciate fine dining, noveau French-style, you must try Melisse. Order the carte blanche, where the chef decides the entire meal for you and even the wait staff doesn't know what it will be. (It sounds gimmicky but it's not). Last night, we had the $200/person truffle menu, and it was superb and worth every penny. Pros: Sublime food, Classy, Quiet Cons: Expensive, Expensive, Expensive more

Not Worth The Money 9/27/2002

The service was so-so. The food was good. The prices were astoundingly high. The portions were the smallest I've ever seen. Avoid the appetizers and soups which are particularly overpriced for what you get. We had a risotto dish which was served on a flat plate, and the risotto arranged in a line about two inches long. Your wallet will be empty when you leave, but then so will your stomach. I felt like an idiot for eating here. It's rip-off city. Pros: taste of the food Cons: quantity of food, service, ultraexpensive more

delicious 9/19/2002

Melisse is our favorite restaurant in LA. Impeccable food and service. Expensive, but worth the money for that special occassion. It is downright awesome Pros: great food, impeccable service, good parking Cons: expensive more

food fantasy 8/31/2002

Top notch. World class fine dining experience. Josiah has brought a whole new level of dining to Los Angeles. All the little extra touches are memorable as is the impeccable, sharp service from the pleasant staff. I couldn't think of one area that needed improvement. Can't wait to come back for the chefs carte blanch menu. Pros: service, lighting, wine list Cons: location more
