Japanese goods 4/1/2011

My wife and I spent a summer in Japan several years ago to visit friends who had moved there and when I come to Mitsuwa, it reminds me of the grocery stores in Japan. We were introduced to a lot of Japanese dishes and now when it's Japanese food night, we come here to get our food supplies. I really like the quality of rice you can find here, compared to the white rice you find at the local grocery chains. Yes, prices for most of the items you're going to buy are going to be kind of expensive but I think it's worth it. The store is clean and we're always finding new things to try when we cruise down each aisle. I wish there were more english translations though, as sometimes, we skip over things since we don't know what they are, lol. more

Great Japanese Groceries 4/16/2006

In this Japanese grocery store, you can find many fresh and rare fish that Japanese people love. They also sell a lot of fresh sushi in a box with variety to choose for. If you come late in the afternoon, you sometime can stiil be able to get their sushi, but in a discounted 50% off original price. more

Craving authentic Japanese food 4/2/2006

You can pick up all your ingredients at Mitsuwa Marketplace in Arlington Heights. The selection is wonderful, albeit a bit pricy. Whether you're looking for drinks, kitchen appliances, fresh vegetables, fish, packaged foods, ramen, candy. . . you can find it here. There's also a bakery that serves fresh bread and ice cream, which is extremely good. A food court is available, too, if you want to pick up food to eat right then and there. The sushi selection at Mitsuwa is also extremely good with a lot to choose from. more

For Authentic Japanese Food 3/19/2006

When you go to Mitsuwa, you'll be able to buy authentic Japanese food. It's often the very same stuff that you would find in grocery stores in Japan. As such, the prices are a little bit higher than I'd usually be comfortable paying, but going there once in a while isn't too bad. The selection is wonderful and it's just a fun place to shop. I've never really bought anything from any of the other little shops that are in the same building, but enjoy browsing around. If you're a manga enthusiast, you'll probably like the bookstore, but make sure you can read Japanese because that's about all you'll find in there! more

Great selection of Japanese Grocery 3/16/2006

I love the grocery store and also the bakery inside. I am not too crazy about their food court, although they sell good sushi. The grocery is full of fresh fish, usually we do not find that many variety of fish in other grocery. Their veggie are also fresh and clean, I usually find the cleanest spinach in this store. more

I think I'm turning Japanese 10/29/2005

Mitsuwa, the former Yaohan, is a wonderful store that can take care of all of your Japanese needs. The food is authentic. There is a variety of toys, games, and books from Japan, as well as a food market, Asahiya bookplace—a great book store, too bad most of the items are in Japanese—a cell phone booth, several “eateries”, so to speak, and much more. They hold a special Japanese festival every year, where you can learn a lot about the culture. more

Japanese Grocer and Food Court 8/23/2005

Mitsuwa is the largest Japanese grocery store in Chicago, if not the Midwest. Not only does the store carry numerous Japanese items, there are also selections from other Asian countries (i.e. China, Korea, Thailand...). There are also small stores within the complex, ranging from a wine/beer shop, ceramic dish ware, travel agency, bookstore, toy store, cosmetics, and bakeries. There is also a food court that is very busy especially during the weekends. Most of the restaurants are Japanese but there is also a Chinese and Korean restaurant as well. There is also a large prepackaged sushi selection that one can take home or eat in the food court. There is not much of a dessert selection, though in the past there have been ice cream, crepes, and shakes that have been sold. All in all, it is a good place to go if one wants to experience Japanese food/culture in a broad manner. more
