I enjoy the food and the sauces they have. I also like the presentation of the food. I think Sushi is over priced but Mikuni's is in line with the competition when it comes to price and what they offer. more

If You Like Raw Oysters, Try The 12 o'clock! 4/30/2009

My first experience at Mikuni's was at this location - what a blast! It was the most lively sushi restaurant I've ever been to...and it was here that I discovered the tasty Marilyn Monroll! Yes, it was a long wait...but it was a Saturday night. Yes, it was pretty expensive...but it was worth it. Mikuni is great for most people's idea of Japanese food and they'll be wowed by the variety of specialty rolls...but if you're looking for an authentic, high-quality ""traditional"" sushi experience, don't come here. You'll be disappointed. Pros: 12 o'clock (decorated raw oysters), Marilyn Monroll Cons: It's not an authentic ""traditional"" sushi experience. more

Sacramento's Best Restaurant! Avoid reading 1-timer reviews! 1/8/2009

I went to Mikuni's with a date, who really wasn't into sushi. That right there gave me insight to the range of food offered at Mikuni. The rolls list was expansive, and yes, as some people have said, many of them have tempura, cream cheese, or something deep fried. But there's an entire list of traditional dishes, raw rolls, and an large nigiri list to choose from for the sushi-lover at heart. And for my date? They not only had the non-raw rolls, but also a full cooked food menu including teriyakis, soups, and more. \r The service seemed slow, but any idiot can see with a place like that it will be. The place was packed. I will tell you now, if you're looking for a quick sushi, go to some crappy place like Tokyo Fro's. If you want to complain about wait times, service, and waiters who aren't there to read the emotions off your face, go somewhere else. \r I have been there 6 times now, for dates, parties, and casual dinners, and all times have been excellent. When something came out wrong, it was returned timely. The nigiri was cut to size, and not too big. the rice was small, and not overpowering. \r I ordered a Pepperfin: thin cut slices of white tuna in a light ponzu and sesame oil sauce with thin sliced jalapenos. At first glance, I thought, ""the fish is drowning in the sauce, this will be bad"". The sesame oil proved me wrong. Ponzu sauce, being mostly water-based, added just a hint as it fell to the place. The oil, which did not saturate, collaborated with the already butter-like quality of the white tuna. It was amazing.\r \r Take who you want here, but do it with style: bring dates here Sunday-Wednesday nights: friends for lunch any day of the week, and co-workers and partiers Thursday-Sunday nights. \r \r Kampai! Pros: Too many to list! Thumbs up! Cons: Parking is downtown- wait times can be long more

Totally did not meet my expectations 10/30/2008

I had heard so many good things about this place and was totally disappointed. First, we were told we would only have to wait 10 minutes for our party of 4 for a table. It took 35 for us to be seated. Our table was small and we were crowded by the other tables. It was so loud we had to shout at each other to be heard. We got the potstickers and they tasted like they were from a frozen foods section at a grocery store. I ordered a bento combo with chicken, salmon, and tempura. My meat was so overcooked it wasn't edible. I stuck my chopstick in my salmon and I could lift it up and it wouldn't flake. My tempura was cold. My friend ordered sushi and her seaweed was stale. Another friend ordered sashimi and he said it tasted good, but it was a really small portion. The only member of our party that was happy ordered udon. I would not recommend eating here - does not live up to the hype. Our waitress was nice, though. Pros: waitress was attentive and friendly Cons: everything else more

Mikuni Japanese 10/23/2008

Was in SMF for theTina Turner concert so I searched citysearch for a highly ranked sushi restaurant to compliment the experience. Friendly, fast, reasonable, comfortable, high quality! Want sushi? In SMF? This is a must do experience, thanks Mikuni!!! I'll be back! Pros: everything more

Good food, fun place 10/8/2008

I went for a quick lunch on a Thursday afternoon last week. I had been when in town 2 years ago, and remembered having fun at the sushi bar. This time, however, it was beetween lunch and dinner, and I sat at a table. The fondly remembered expansive list of original rolls seemed now mundane. Everything was either with deep fried shrimp, spicy tuna, or cream cheese...none of which I like. I got two rolls that were good, but not spectacular. The atmosphere was charming to fun. The service was tolerable, but the waitress seemed in a hurry to get me out. I would go here again for a quick roll, or with a large party for the fun, but not to impress anyone or for quality sushi. Pros: Expansive list, multiple locations, fun atmosphere Cons: Average sushi more

great sushi and nice place 8/30/2008

I prefer the Mikuni's in downtown and off hazel over the one in Elk Grove b/c the sushi made at the Elk Grove one can be kind of sloppy (meaning it falls apart when you pick it up, which shouldn't happen). However, you can expect the fish at any of these locations to be fresh 100% of the time. I like their rolls, very inventive. I prefer not to come here when I am looking for a low key place with more traditional sushi. Don't get me wrong I love their rolls here, but they're menu is geared toward ones with all the mayo and tempura. Still, love this place and they have come a long ways from almost going out of business to becoming the trendiest japanese restaurant is Sac. Pros: always fresh, always the best service Cons: long a** wait more

Disappointment 8/28/2008

I ordered take-out today and was very disappointed with the quality of food I received. I ordered 2 Hamachi Kama and other items. Usually the fish is a good size, pretty consistent every time I order it. So I bring my food all the way back home (an hour away) open the box and find my fish half the size it usually is and burnt. One of them was a little better but the other one was tiny. I was embarrassed in front of my friends because I have been telling them about the place. Is this how it usually is with take-out? Because customers cannot see inside the box, the kitchen serves whatever? \r \r I have also dined in numerous times because of it's location and ambience, however the service isn't that great nor is the food. It's decent, but not something to wait in line for or ""got to have"" kind of deal. more

Mediocre at best 5/27/2008

Only in Sacramento would people think this is a great sushi restaurant. It is good, but if it were in SF or Seattle it would be really mediocre. The service is good and the ambiance tries hard to be hip, so it gets points there. But the fish is so-so. Pros: good service, if you like industrial the decor is nice Cons: hard to park, food is mediocre more

Love Mikuni's 10/18/2007

Great Sushi & Atmosphere, this is one of our favorite locations. With restaurants in Roseville & now in Elk Grove there is always a convenient one to go to. We really like the Sushi Bar service, fast & fresh. Ask them about their torched rolls! Pros: Fresh Creative Sushi more

Best SUSHI anywhere 7/25/2007

I've now been eating at Mikuni for over 6 years and have never had bad meal or experiance, The food is amazing and the service is just as great. I have been to sushi resturant from CA-Fl and never found one that could compare. You must eat there. more

Avoid like the Beubonic Plague ... 5/22/2007

This place is all trend and no substance. Here are better places to go for Sushi - Miguros, Zen Toros, Safeway, Nishiki, Hard Rock Cafe, Outback Steakhouse, McDonald's (the McFish sandwich is better than most sushi at Mikunis). I went to the downtown location. The wait was 3 hours, the service was slower than molasses in the Arctic in January, the drinks had merely a sprinkling of alcohol, not nearly enough to numb my tastebuds to the taste of the sushi, the crowd was loud and quasi-/pseudo-pretentious, the food was morbidly expensive, the ambiance was fatally flawed and the wasabi had no kick. If you have to go here for a business lunch because people at your office don't know any better, order rice and edamame. Even though the rice was overcooked and the edamame was too, at least you won't be spending much money or risking exposure to Chickenella or Giardia or Streptococci or Enterococci or Enterobacteriaciae or Ebola. Pros: Eye candy everywhere Cons: Too numerous to list more

Most innovating and best tasting sushi I've had. 5/6/2007

We sat at the the sushi bar and did not experience the bad customer service some have been complaining about. It WAS pretty busy and crowded, but I still saw effort being made to tend to us AND the people around us. \r \r But on with the sushi. \r oh my, it was so delicious! The chef whipped us up his own thing off the menu -- mm my mouth waters just thinking about it. It was all so fresh and bursting with flavors. The only name we got for one roll was ""a slice of heaven"" - it was surely close. A part I particularly enjoyed was when he torched our rolls - it gave the sauces a very distinct and tasty smokey flavor. \r \r We live a few hours away but I will go there and back just for the food - it's that yummy. more

Horrible Sushi 3/30/2007

I love, love, love sushi! Unfortunately, I couldn't find any on my plate. This must be the worst experiences I have had at a sushi restaurant. We had to wait nearly 30 mins to be seated - and we HAD a reservation! The ambiance in the bar was fairly good so it did not worry us much that we were waiting so long; however, the service did not inprove once seated. The dinning room was freezing cold and the server did not seem to be at all concerned when I brought this to his attention. It is amazing I had a chance to bring anything to his attention as he was more interested in the girls at the next table. The server brought out the wrong order, TWICE! Additionally, he did not describe any of the menu items even when asked. Eventually, we ended up leaving without ever eating but that wasnt even easy as the server could not manage to run my credit card properly. Pros: The bar, although packed, isn't a bad place for a pre-dinner cocktail Cons: Food and service more

The best sushi in town, great ambiance and people watching and tasty cocktails! 11/19/2006

Sushi is typically an every once in a while event until you visit Mikuni's! Chic environment, great and fresh tastes and rolls such as the 'spicy johnny', 'puff daddy'...always good. Service and environment are very good. An energetic and tasty night out...you'll love it!\r Pros: Great drinks, envt, food and service! Cons: Can be busy so get on the list and get yourself a cocktail! more

Great place to get your sushi on 10/19/2006

I really like this resturant. It's actually one of the best sushi spots in Sacramento. The sashimi is good as well. It can be very crowded during the weekend or during events. But what good resturant isn't? Take this into consideration: If it isn't crowded during peak hours, then you probably wouldn't want to dine there anyway. Pros: Great food, friendly staff Cons: Long wait during peaktime more

Good Sushi in Sacramento 10/14/2006

I live in San Francisco. I was in Sacramento visiting a friend for the weekend. We scoured the citysearch web site to find a good restaraunt in the midtown area and settled on Mikuni. \r \r Mikuni has good sushi, ok service, and ok tempura. We found Mikuni's atmosphere to be a little on noisy side; which is ok, if that's what you are looking for on Saturday night. However, my taste for a sushi restaraunt are more traditional than the boisterious collegiate atmosphere of Mikuni. The sushi chefs are fun, nice and willing to make you anything you like. The quality and freshness of the fish was pretty good, given that we are few miles away from the closest ocean. Overall recommendation, if you can deal with the noise, twenty-somethings, then you can have a good sushi meal in Sacramento.\r Pros: Friendly wait staff, good sushi/food, lively atmosphere Cons: Noisey, slightly over-priced, long wait to be seated at a table more
