My wife and I visited this small restaurant for Valentine's Day, and felt quite disappointed. The decor screams 1980's, and the floor needs a good mopping--and that was just the first impression. Now typically, I love holes-in-the-wall because frequently the food is fabulous and the character makes them worthy of plenty of repeat business. Unfortunately, this place had neither great food nor character. To clarify, though, the food was NOT BAD, but as many restaurant-goer's out there can attest, the experience of dinner-out is about much more than just taste...for Valentine's Day, they offered a limited menu (4 courses) for a fixed price of $45. What we got was quite possibly the worst service ever, and food that was just 'good.' Dessert was 'included' in the price, but after 2+ hours of sitting at our table and hunting down our waitress for the very last time, we opted to forego the final course, and simply pay our bill and leave. But wait, there's more! We were brought the wrong food items twice, my water glass was left empty for what seemed like an eternity, and we didn't get our wine order until our first course was delivered, almost an hour after we sat down. Are these trifling complaints, you may ask?? Perhaps...perhaps if our meal did not cost $100...or if our waitress actually tried to make eye contact with us and provide some semblance of service at one point during the evening--it almost seemed like she was avoiding us! Maybe our night would have been different if it was not Valentine's Day, and they weren't so 'busy'...hard to say, but I will likely never eat at this restaurant again--which is sad, because really, the food wasn't all that bad (hence, 2 stars instead of 1). Our server Lauren told us off which got in the way of what would have been an average meal with appetizer highlights. The raddichio baked in gorgonzolla cheese with walnut crust was exceptiional. AFTER we had tipped above 20% our server came over to tell us she hopes we come back but had overheard bits of our conversation she ""found the subject matter offensive"" We had been discussing LDS history (which can be an offensive subject matter indeed) and how it is to live in Utah. Please note we were the only people in the restaurant and kept our voices to a reasonable tone. If the owners/managers are LDS and do not want non-members dining there if they speak of historical fact that doesn't highlight the church's best moments then they should advertize as the best Mormon Italian in town. The pesto gnocci was just above average though the portion was small. Michelangelo i so bad that i am ashaimed to be from Italy. This is not italian food. To start, because they have no clue of what they are doing it takes 2 hours to get your food and this would be nothing if they had a good wine list. The wine is the cheapest that italy has to offer but it is so overpriced that if you don't know about wine you would think it was a good bootle. After more than 2 hours of waiting we left without eating dinner. No one to greet us upon arrival. Sat us down and said ""we're out of menus"". Finally was brought a menu but was told ""this menu doesn't have our specials, we'll bring those later"". Eventually waitress arrived and we asked about the specials. In the middle of her explaining the specials another guy shows up, interupts her and hands us the menus which had the specials. Appetizers (soup and a salad) took about 1 hour 15 minutes to arrive. 45 minutes after that we asked when the main meal would show up, waitress said 10 minutes. We waited the 10 minutes, then another 10 and then left having just eaten a salad and soup after 2+ hours! They comped the ""meal"". By the way, I sat in a seat that looked directly into the kitchen. The entire time we were there not a SINGLE PERSON WAS FED THE MAIN COURSE! People's candles on their tables were burning out, including ours and you know it's really bad when everyone in the place start talking to eachother wondering where the food is. This experience will be talked about whenever bad dining experiences come up in conversation for sure.... the candle burned out long before the food ever came.... We took a friend for his birthday. It was our first visit. The waitress warned us that entrees were made to order, so service would be slower. We chose three appetizers to share. They were all different and wonderful and easily enough for three to four to sample. Our friend's favorite was the melon wrapped in proscuitto. Each of us had a veal dish and we were all happy with our selections. Entree was served with a delicious potato and green beans, so we did not get to try their pasta. Maybe next time. Our friend had never tried tiramusu, so we ended on that note. Yes, service was a little slow, but if not in a hurry, it gives you time to digest between courses. While a little pricey, we will definitely go again to try other dishes. Pros: different Italian dining experience (if you are used to just pasta places) more

I have eaten lots of Italian food in my life, but this is by far the best. The spinach ravioli is my all-time favorite dish. If you are looking for doughy, cheese-laden ravioli, this is not the place to go. The ravioli shell is impossibly thin and so delicious. The butter sauce that it is served in makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The service was very good and the atmosphere strikes the right tone. I really loved eating there. I was really disappointed with Michelangelo's this time. Had been many times but this was the worst experience ever. Took forever for our waiter to take our orders and when she did she forgot to bring all the drink orders. The food was just okay- very, very salty. Our food took forever to get served and came out in phases making it necessary for people to start eating before everyone was served. It appears that the restaurant has gone downhill and perhaps has new management. By the way this was a birthday dinner and they even flubbed bringing out the cake. Michelangelo's has a new chef. This is good news, because the slow service was coming from the kitchen. As my prior review states, we are long time fans of the food, but now of the timing also. We were well- attended to in a friendly and professional manner. The wine pours were generous, and the waitress-recommended pairings perfect. To my well- versed palate, the best Italian in the city. old review: Order off the specials menu, all the raviolis are sublime, the pear raviolis are my all time favorite, Yes, it takes a little longer, don't try to eat here and then go to a show or movie, settle in and enjoy conversation while pacing yourself through Italian delicacies. we find the waiters and chef quite personable, take an extra minute to pause and enjoy yourself. Michelangelo Ristorante is the most fabulous, authentic Italian restauant in Salt Lake City. Run by an eccentric and temperamental chef and a native Italian waitstaff, each dish prepared is very simple in its tastey elegance. If you're looking for a place to kiss your rear, don't come here. But if you are willing to open your mind a little bit and enjoy REAL Italian food, then come and enjoy. Granted, the waitstaff could use some fine tuning (you spend ALOT of time waiting for someone to come notice you). However, anyone who says they hated their experience wasn't paying attention. If you're looking for fine Italian food with service to match, DO NOT go to Michelangelos. The service is just plain awful ! The food is mediocre at best. My mistake might have been taking a bottle of my favorite wine, although they still got their $10.00 corkage, which took 15 minutes to get corked. When the waiter finally came around, another 20 minutes, he could not recommend anything because he did not know what I may like. Go figure. I order the gnocchi and guess what... they were out of it. I setled on the fettuccine bolognese, which very well could have come from a can. Believe me, there are better choices in Salt Lake. Pros: There are none. Cons: Service, food, location. more

If you come in like an Ugly American, then that's the experience you'll have. After we spent a week in Italy last year and returned home to Salt Lake, we went straight here. I have been dining at this restuarant for several years. You never know what to expect on arrival. Good service or snubs. It depends on who you are with or how high on the priority list you are that night. Be sure to order the salad or you might get your food served to you cold. I don't recommend the salad. Gnocchi is my personal favorite, pesto or gargonzolla. The best is with the marinara sauce. Be sure to flash your ""bling"" , be on your best behavior, talk about your latest accomplishments, who you know and you'll be sure to get the VIP treatment...lol! NOT HERE. After reading some of the negative reviews, I was a bit nervous about taking out of town guests, but fortunately it was as good as I remembered. Okay, so at 6 pm the place smelled like it has just been cleaned with Pine-sol, and the service was not as smooth as Cucina Toscana - but the food was fabulous. The salmon appetizer was superb; the fettucini with Truffles was extraordinary, the wine was great. My guests loved it. We will be back. more

I typically go to a restaurant for service and to relax. But this place is an exception. I go to Michelangelo for the AMAZING, FABULOUS FOOD. This is a place worth investing time and money to appreciate. If you are impressed by expensive furniture, go somewhere else. If you are a penny pincher, go somewhere else (cheap, tasty chinese and mexican dives ABOUND in this town). But if you are an adventurous eater and can spend money on a food without regrets, this is one of the yummiest places in Salt Lake. I can't say it's a bargain, but it's fabulous. We were so disappointed having heard good things. A bad start when the bread came and the balsamic vinegar was in a dirty container which leaked. We were missing silverware which we had to take from the next table. Service was punctory at best. Food presentation was not good. Spaghetti Michelangelo is a large bowl of fresh pasta with some arugula. The ""parmesan"" cheese was a small slice on top kind of melted. Basically this was a bowl of noodles for 14.50. My companion had the ravioli which has a ""sauce"" that was congealed and watery at the same time. Yes, the pasta was very fresh and tasty, but it just couldn't make up for the blandness of the rest of the dishes. If this is ""real Italian"" I might prefer Olive Garden. more
