Best

I moved into an apartment building right around the corner from Metropolis in September of 07. I had never been there before, and waited about a month or two before checking it ou...

Worst

Two ratings for this place. Overated and just not good

it's just fun hanging out at Metropolis with great coffee in hand. more

The Real Chicago 5/15/2005

Recently, I was in line for my usual doppio espresso. As I waited, I heard 4 different languages being spoken in line. This is the real Chicago - an immigrant city, and Metropolis very much represents the diversity. I got my doppio (absolute best in the city), and found a seat. I looked around and realized that there were so many things going on around me. Wheeling and dealing, parenting, studying, arguing, playing, loving...the list goes on. This is truely an incredible place that everyone should check out. more

Metropolis Rocks! 5/13/2005

Craftsmanship. Artistry. Welcoming and warm. Vibrant. Energetic. Conscientious and unique. more

Not your average coffee shop. 5/12/2005

Young company and it is unknown to many Chicagoans. A great place for a cup of coffee. Nice and comfy setting with free Wi-Fi. Well trained and friendly staff. Free parking. Metropolis should be ahead of 99% of the coffee shops mentioned here on drinks. more

Outstanding Neighborhood Roasting House 5/12/2005

Art Lattes? Cyber cafe? Open Mic? These are all things you can find at Metropolis along with displays of local artists, hip tunes, and of course, your neighbors! Hanging out at Metropolis is becoming an addiction in Edgewater. God bless them! Pros: location, people, quality coffee Cons: sometimes too packed, can get noisy more

User review by abrowni 5/12/2005

Metropolis is the best coffee house in the city. The smell of fresh roasted coffee is wonderful. Great local art on the walls, weekly movies, poetry and music and writers groups gather. They are single handedly strengthening the arts community of the north side. Pros: Parking, Inexpensive, Great Coffee!! more

Metropolis Serves Up the Best 5/11/2005

If you are looking for the absolute best coffee in the Chicago area, this is the place to go. Whether you are stopping in for a cup or looking for top of the line, fresh roasted beans, you cannot do better. And for personal service in choosing the coffee to bring home, Tony will see to it you find your delight, and throws into the deal such knowledge and enthusiasm that will keep you coming back. Go for the coffee, stay for the events, like movie night, live music or poetry, etc. Friendly staff, cushy sofas, and art that doesn't insult your intelligence. Limted parking next to the building more

The Best Coffee in the city of Chicago 5/10/2005

This place is what a coffee roaster/house is supposed to be. They are absolute perfectionists! They roast to perfection. They brew to perfection. They serve to perfection. They even provide a valuable community connection. You know - the old meeting of the minds type of place. Now I know some people really like that Intellawhatsit. Yeah they are ok. But Metropolis is better in every regard AND they don't have that certain SNOBBERY that the other place exudes. What a diverse custormer base. BIG thumbs up Metropolis! Pros: Good parking, Diverse, Impeccable Cons: none, none, none more

Lots of natural light plus a bit of outdoor seating within view of the lake. The menu is limited but always fresh (and delish). Great bagels, croissants, pastries and a few sandwiches. The coffee is roasted inhouse but tea lovers take note... many varietals and premium blends are available. Draws a terrific crowd as well. Active community outreach keeps the walls graced with artwork and the cafe sponsors music, performance, or movie events (to name a few). Terrific bookstore next door. Pros: Parking more

Old World meets New 5/10/2005

An old world approach to inviting neighbors to the town square, take a moment to talk, enjoy their company but combined with the new world theme of good food, art, social movement, and the urban setting. Tony and Jeff are the ultimate in proprietors - genial and charming. more

I am a huge coffee snob. Honestly, I used to drive every morning to get my coffee because I never liked what was local. I am pleased, and so damn happy, that Metropolis opened up 3 blocks from me. It's the best service, coffee and friendliest environment. The crew always has a smile, and if you come in often, they will remember your java choice and name. Support your local Son and Pop shops. Plus, these guys roast their own beans. Get in your cars, or take the EL to Granville, and come visit us. Oh, and yes. I still sometimes drive. Sigh. Pros: parking, outdoor seating, great coffee more

The real thing 5/10/2005

In a world of Starbucks fake machine made coffee, Metropolis is the real thing. Real roasting and the fine art of baristas. Best of all - Tony and Jeff Dreyfuss are committed to developing a true community coffee house and have succeeded. more

Best coffee in Chicago 5/10/2005

Metropolis is it. Bar none. Fantastic service. Pillars in the Edgewater community. Coffee is artfully brewed, and damn tasty. If you haven't been to Metropolis, you don't drink coffee. more

the greatest coffee this side of the hemisphere 5/10/2005

Up and coming coffeehouse in North Chicago. Not only is the service great and the music is always amazing, but the coffee is the best I've had in a long time. Try the Green tea latte for a change, love at first sip. more

Nothing else comes close... 5/10/2005

Hands down the finest coffee in Chicago. As a native of Portland Oregon, I am used to awesome coffee, and after having scoured, trawled and dredged Chicago's coffee offerings, I can say that nothing else comes close to Metropolis' french press coffee preparation. Here you will learn why wars were fought over access to the coffee bean. The taste is not just pleasurable, it is sensual, and nowhere else in the Midwest will you discover the heavenly complexity of ""java."" The staff here is always open and friendly, the art provocative and sophisticated, the atmoshere great for intellectuaul, business or social encounters. And don't forget: when you take those first sips, after the coffee has cooled a bit, close your eyes and just notice the tastes unfolding across your palate ...amazing! more

Best Coffee in Chicago, Roasted in front of you! 5/10/2005

Finally a coffee house in Chicago with an artistic vibe, friendly regulars, COUCHES, and amazing coffee. Go more than once and you're bound to meet the regulars, an eclectic mix of Loyola kids, neighborhood scholars, and families. The biggest ""regulars"" of all are Tony and Jeff, the father son team that started this neighborhood staple. If you've been looking for a new place to call home, go meet Metropolis. Pros: beats intelligentsia, great patio, off the redline more

Finally a real coffeehouse! 10/20/2004

I've recently moved from Seattle to Chicago - so I don't know all the cool coffee houses in the city but METROPOLIS is DEFINITELY a winner! If you hanging out in the Edgewater hood you need to stop by. They roast their own beans, they have free internet, good teas, decent pastries, new art up frequently, sometimes live music and very sweet service. TWO THUMBS UP, no doubt. I've been a repeat customer many times. Only down side- they are not open that late. Pros: Good drinks, Great Service , Awesome Ambience Cons: , Not inexpensive more

Hot. 10/2/2004

Initially, I went to Metroplis to study. I admit that the atmosphere was better for socializing than studying, but I loved it. The coffee was quality, the food was good the atmosphere was amazing. Great art on the walls and a great seating setup. Hot. more
