Horrible Place 3/23/2009

Food has too much grease, and too much seasoning. When i went there last I almost fell because the stairs had a piece of rubber that i tripped on. Bar staff is extreamly slow, and so is the wait staff. Menus are always greasy and table have crumbs on them. Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: Bad Service. more

Great food Great Fun Great Place to take your UT students to when visiting 2/2/2009

We recently took a weekend to visit our daughter who is a UT student and we took her and 3 of her friends to Mesa Ranch South. Incredible food and service! We all ordered different entrees and shared bites so we could sample a variety of dishes and they were all fabulous. But the best part was the Filet of Mignon which I ordered - truly melt in your mouth, tender, well seasoned, beef. The Live Music was a plus and not over-powering which allowed us to visit with our daughter and her friends. I know my daughter will no longer object to our visits when she knows that a dinner at Mesa Ranch is thrown in with the deal :) Pros: Perfect ambience, Fabulous Food, Ample Parking and great Service more

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE 12/22/2008

After several years of patronage, one night in June, I left my cell phone at the restaurant. The help stole the phone - which was confirmed. When I was unable to retrieve my phone, I would have at least expected the manager to offer some gratuitous token. None was made and I have not been back since. In Impact this week, the names of the owners were mentioned. I was impressed with the owner's father being prior owner of the Barn. We used to visit there all the time, (yes, I am an Austenite). So, I called Ray and spoke to him and let him know that I no longer was a patron and why. He indicated he wished he had known about the situation earlier and failed to offer anything in order to have my patronage returned. I was floored. Yes, I left my phone. And, no I am not out for a free drink. Yet, a glass of wine on the house would have me back. Things happen in the service oriented business, you must make the customer happy if you want return business. It is sad that they will never see me or my friend circle again. Cons: Lack of customer service more

mesa south 10/20/2008

mesa ranch just moved into my neighborhood a couple months ago. at first i was a little sad to find out that one of my favorite asian restaurants had closed to make way for this new place, but since mesa ranch has opened, ive found myself frequenting the same building even more than before. my favorite thing ive had on the menu so far is the ancho pork tenderloin, its wrapped in bacon and comes with some slightly spicy mashed potatoes, really good. it does seem somewhat empty the times that ive been there, but i hope its just because its new and still getting a footing because its a nice addition to the area. more

Mesa Ranch South 10/17/2008

We went expected great food like we heard. We were there for an hour and a half because they lost our ticket (restaurant was empty.) They handled the situtaion very poorly still charging us. The service was horrible with drinks being empty the whole time. It seemed they hired kids who don't care about service and quality. After they packed our food to go...the food wasn't even good. Luby's has a better chicken fried steak!!! I would not recomend them to anyone, maybe the north restaurant, but NOT the south!!! more

South Austin Location ! 9/17/2008

Having been a long time fan of the north mesa ranch...i was overjoyed to discover they had opened a new location at the southwest corner of oltorf and I35. In addition to dinner music the south location has live music during happy hour as well which is from 4-7pm.They feature many appetizers at 1/2 price during this time and $1 off all drinks. In keeping with the south austin vibe, this location is a tad more casual than its northern counterpart. You can feel comfortable and never underdressed. There are a few additions to the south menu, including: fajita's , Nacho's, and the pablano macaroni sidedish...which is served in a cast iron skillet and way better than any other fried macaroni ive tried anywhere. After u fill ur belly with ranch food....definitely try the desserts ..none have let me down yet, and the bread pudding with candied pecans is especially tasty. Pros: plenty of parking space unlike many of the restaurants in the area(yall know how south congress is) Cons: this isnt a con really but make reservations for very large parties more

Great steaks at great prices! 7/14/2008

The quality of the steak at this place is as good as any place in Austin. The seasoning is perfect and the steaks cooked perfectly. For me, i always get the bone in ribeye, the wife always gets the fillet. What makes this place better than the other steak houses in austin are the side dishes. The corn in the husk is beautiful, the steak fries great, and the grilled asparagus the best i've ever had! Make RSVP for fri/sat nights. Pros: Great cut of steak, extremely well seasoned, great prices! Cons: Does get crowded, so RSVP for Fri and Sat nights. more

Great Margaritas 6/26/2008

My wife and I go to mesa ranch for covktails every week ,they are great. They take good care of you and have great drinks Pros: great drinks Cons: great drinks more

Mixed Bag: Wonderful music, poor service, good food 4/23/2008

We don't eat steaks out often because I enjoy grilling them over pecan at home. But Mesa has always had a nice steak at a fair price. Our last trip may be our last trip. We had a friend along so it wasn't too bad that we had time to talk, but 10 minutes before getting our drink order, and another 15 minutes before getting them served was not acceptable. I told our waiter they had the slowest bartender in town. We ordered wine before our meal, and had almost finished eating before it showed up. My steak was cold - cooked perfectly, and nice meat, but would have been much better served right after cooking. The server never checked so I could complain. I think I know why it wasn't crowded on a Friday night. I wish the staff cared. Pros: Easy listening Western singer, OK food Cons: Unacceptable service more

Will go back! 12/27/2007

okay, first of all....I'm taking the time to write this positive review because it seems that when people have a good experience, they tell their friends. When people have a bad experience, the tell everyone (via the web) When reading other restaurant reviews, I feel that people too often seem to focus on the service, which I agree is a part of the overall experience, but when I read reviews...I want to hear about the FOOD! Not about some waiter that is probably not there anymore months or a year later! We just ate at Mesa Ranch and had a very delicious dinner. We ordered the seasoned chips, salsa and queso. The salsa was homemade and fresh. A little mild for my taste and maybe too much cilantro, but still good and fresh. The queso was very good....no complaints. I ordered the grilled pablano pepper with grilled shrimp and corn salsa. YUMMY. Although a warning...it is VERYspicy. And I like a lot of spice. The shrimp on it was grilled with tail-on and it was very tasty. I will get it again. The cesar salad that came with our meal (choice of house or cesar) was perfect. The greens were crisp and fresh, the dressing was the right amount and the cornbread croutons were a nice surprise (I would have liked to have seen a little more in our salad though) We ordered the 8 oz tenderloin with a side of hollandaise and added 6 grilled shrimp. The steak was top quality and like butter in your mouth. I will say that we ordered it 'medium"" and it first came to us medium-rare. But those things don't bother me as long as the steak is yummy....and it was! Oh, on a side note, the bread and butter they brought out was great. Rolls and cactus shaped corn bread with flavored butter. I'm also a connoisseur of margaritas and they were tasty! I would suggest the frozen over the rocks though. We got there early and as we were leaving, the live music was starting, which apparently they have live music nightly. We will go back! Pros: Tender, quality steak more

Better than Sullivan's 6/16/2007

Mesa Ranch is now our favorite place for steaks. We don't have to hassle with valet parking downtown and the service and food are wonderful. Love the cactus cornbread, the dinner salads (esp the homemade dressings and croutons) and the quail appetizer, as well. The steaks are wonderfully seasoned and cooked to perfection. The homemade desserts are to die for. We have been to dinner twice and are taking our son (the steak critic) tonight. The singer/guitar players are better than those in a lot of Austin's well known honkeytonks. The wait and hostess staff have always been very friendly and attentive. Pros: 2 Thumbs Up! more

Excellent food and meat, good ambience 6/10/2007

The food here is excellent. Big portions of quality food. It's relatively expensive, but fairly priced for what you get. We got the elk sausage for appetizers which was soooo good. Just melts in your mouth. And we also got the fried cactus, not so special, I'd skip that one. I got the rack-of-lamb for dinner and it was delicious. Cooked just how I asked and lots of meat. The cocktails were also good. I am definitely planning to come back for my next special occasion. Pros: Food, Meat, Ambience Cons: Pricey more

I'll give a 2nd chance 5/26/2007

Stopped in for lunch and ordered the potroast. I guess I should have ordered a steak, everyone else seems to think the steak is great. The menu said with carrots ect but only specs of carrots were found mixed in with the meat. There was no gravy just the shredded meat, and it was almost watery. It came with mashed potatos and again no gravy, nothing on them at all not even butter. I used the leftover butter from the bread to top the taters. This plate of food was almost tastless, very disappointing. I'll try again but order something different. Pros: nice decor and good service Cons: almost tastless plate of potroast more

Best Steak I've Ever Had 2/18/2007

First off-Went to this Restaurant based solely off reviews from this websit. Tried to make a reservation at 7pm on a Saturday night. They were booked until after 8pm. Showed up a liitle early, didn't get seated until 8, but they had an awesome duet playing in the bar area, singing at just the right volume. The owner greeted us at the door, and after being seated, she insisted if there is anything wrong, tell her. The fried cactus is good, it's the batter that makes it worth it, you can't taste the cactus. Cornbread is delicious as well. I had the 12 oz stip with grilled vegetables, Medium well. I've eated at fancy steak places and not so fancy places. This is hands down the best steak I've ever had!!! Very small, but romantic place. I can't wait to go back to austin just to eat here!!! Pros: Great service, Great food Cons: Small restaurant, so very busy with a long wait. more

Great place for steak 12/4/2006

We decided to give this place a try based on all the great reviews. The food was terrific. We also recommend the fried cactus. The quail is also delicious. The hostess and waitress were very friendly. The hostess did warn us that the food is cooked with enough spice to provide flavor. I'm not big on spicy food and was a bit concerned. The food was seasoned perfectly with wonderful flavor. The only thing that could be improved was the Mexican martini. It was a bit too sweet for my taste. We look forward to visiting again. more

Great example of good southern food 9/12/2006

This is pretty close to Hudson's on the Bend without the long drive and the outrageous prices. The food was excellent, the wine list extensive and service superb. The menu was diverse so that meat eaters and vegetarians alike can enjoy. Can't wait to get back and try something new on the menu. Pros: Great location, wonderful live music Cons: would make reservations for a large group more

Great Place 7/1/2006

There's not much more I can say that hasn't been said by my fellow reviewers. This is a Great Place to Eat and sit back and enjoy the Ambiance. If your a Born and Raised Texan then you'll truly enjoy Mesa Ranch and if you not a Born and raised Texan the you are in for a Great Surprize. My Family and I will always make time for this Restaurant. Sundays they have Live Music. Thumbs Up Pros: Great Food for a Texan. Great Family Atmophere. more

User review by sparkallee 1/26/2006

When I took my boyfriend to Mesa Ranch for his birthday, we had a great meal that was complemented by an attentive-but-not-pushy waiter, and wonderful live music. The menu is original, and the portions are generous. We tried the beer battered cactus and were very pleased with the presentation and taste. Same goes for the fresh rolls and cornbread that come with the meal. My boyfriend thought the mesquite grilled rib eye was excellent, and my plate of grilled chicken and pasta was delicious even as leftovers (that's how big the entrees were). I'm so glad we experienced this restaurant because it's now one of my favorites! Pros: Food, Good parking, Waitstaff more

New Happy Hour Spot 1/22/2006
