It's a Rap 9/10/2003

Just because an 80's radio station is sponsoring a night at Mermaid, don't go expecting 80's music. You get 99% rap. So if you don't want the vulgarities and banging that go with that type of music, don't go here. If you like rap, going is a must. Waitstaff was always there when needed, all the staff had pleasant attitude. If you don't smoke, you will by the end of the night, because the place gets filled with the haze from cigarettes. It is packed, and hoppin'. I like the dress code, dress to impress. Pros: dress code, staff attitude, drink prices Cons: rap, smoke, cover charge more

The bartenders are worth the drive... 1/20/2003

So we all know what to expect from the Mermaid, but the bright ray of sunshine is the WONDERFUL bartenders in the nightclub. The dollar drinks mixed with the charming male bartenders is enough to make me come back for more. They just presented themselves very well and made everyone feel welcome. I recommend you check it out. The value is good and the people are fun to watch. Pros: inexpensive, polite, safe Cons: carding policy, coatcheck more

Editorial
  • The Scene
From the outside, the Mermaid seems as kitschy as they come, evoking an era when shag carpeting ruled, and rock music either thundered or mellowed. The towering mermaid sculpture atop the building, erected during that swinging bicentennial year of 1976, is worth the drive alone.

    The Draw
Family-friendly activities rule the day, while at night, adults who strike out on the lanes can head to the nightclub. DJs spin the classics for your dancing pleasure. For food, there's standard bowling-alley fare, and also a bar menu featuring burgers and the like. The crowd tends to be unpretentious folks from Fridley and environs.
