Favorite Mexican Restaurant 2/5/2012

Do not even take into consideration the negative reviews left about this restaurant. If you are a vegetarian, don't go to a Mexican restaurant, go to Ann Arbor. This is the best Mexican food around. I have been to Amigos, Mexican Gardens, Xochimilco's, and Taco Especial. They do not compare when it comes to good food. The Matador's food is full of taste and very modestly priced. It is as close to authentic as you can get in Metro Detroit. I love the atmosphere and the staff. They are very nice and you get your food in a timely manner. Their salsa is excellent and different than anyone else and I can't get enough of the numerous amounts of tortilla chips that you get. (They bring out more every time you finish a bowl.) The Botana is to die for as well as their Enchiladas. They even have some awesome American food. Their chicken tenders are the best I've ever had. They also have excellent burgers, fries, and cheesesticks. I love this place and will recommend it to anyone who likes good food. more

Just Terrible 6/27/2011

I'm only giving this place a one star rating because I can't give it no stars. I'm a lactose intollerant vegetarian. So, I ordered the bean burrito no cheese. Thinking that the bean burrito would have some whole beans mixed with refried beans and veggies or something. No, this was a lump of microwaved refried beans from a can wrapped in a tortilla. My mother agreed that her taco's were terrible as well. And that was with a half hour wait time. While we were there, there was a birthday. I couldn't believe that someone would want to spend such a wonderful day eating such horrible food. more

Don't be misled by the bad reviews! 7/25/2010

For all those claiming that this restaurant is the worst imitation or is terrible, I couldn't disagree more. In all reality, everyone claiming to look for 100% authentic Mexican cuisine should simply travel abroad in Mexico, as that is the only way you are going to find it. All ""authentic"" restaurants here in US are simply a blend of traditional family dishes and the American culture. Albeit they are authentic to the family who's restaurant you are eating in, doesn't mean that they are 100% legitimate dishes you would find in Mexico. As well, simply put, even if they are from Mexico doesn't mean they eat/make the same food as everyone else in the country. How would you like it if somebody came over to your home and said your mother's lasagna tasted like garbage and should be made more like my mom's? And for those who find it absurd to put parmesan cheese in the dishes, why must everyone conform to one type of food, wouldn't it get tedious eating the same tasting food every time? Come on people, get over it, variety of taste is good. Really, if you aren't fresh off the plane from Mexico, or any other ethnic country itself, stop complaining about the lack of authenticity ethnic restaurants have, you're definitely not the expert here. All in all, I was very satisfied with the couple of times I have gone to The Matador. The service was great, the atmosphere was very friendly and family-oriented, and although the bowls for tortilla chips might be small, you do get free refills. Some of their dishes have a few differing details that I haven't found in other Mexican restaurants, but I enjoy them just the same. If you're a gringo/a with an appetite for some Mexican cuisine like me, then you'll surely love this restaurant! Pros: Family-owned, friendly atmosphere, great food! more

The Best I Ever Ate 5/4/2010

I grew up in Dearborn Heights and my father brought tacos home once in awhile when he worked late which was my first experience with Mexican food of any kind. It was only a counter and I believe a couple tiny tables at the time. The owners closed for part of the year to return to Mexico every year. The tacos were my my first love of Mexican food and still to this day, when I visit my mother, who still lives at the old place, I still try to get my favorite tacos. It's been about 40 years now and I still love them like no other!! Service is great too by the way!! Not sure where the other comments came from. I've never ever had a problem there. Pros: Tacos, Tacos, and Tacos Cons: Don't know of any more

Worst Mexican food in town! 3/27/2009

The food is just awful. Those looking for anything resembling decent Mexican food will be very disappointed. They put parmesan cheese on the tacos, mozzarella cheese on the burritos, and a weird tasteless ""chili"" sauce on nearly everything else. The refried beans are canned. The chicken is tasteless. The salsa has the texture and appearance of tomato juice. It's completely liquid with no solid particles in it -- that's right, not so much as a tomato seed or bit of onion. The tortilla chips are served in a 4 ounce bowl. Pros: Free parking Cons: Everything else more

POOR SERVICE 5/1/2008

Went to Matador's for dinner last night with my family. The restaurant was not that busy. After patiently waiting a half hour for our nacho and two tacos, we noticed that three other customers that had came in after us were getting their food. I asked our waitress if our order had gotten lost and pointed out that other diners were being served before we were. Our waitress explained that our order will be out shortly. WELL IT NEVER CAME..... After seeing the third customer get their food before us, we got up and told our waitress that we were leaving. All she said was ""sorry""..... No, let me check on your order......No, let me see if I can speed things up back there..... No, is there anything I can do to get you to stay.......... Sorry Margaret and Ray, but that's just poor service........ more

I bought the 2008 entertainment book.....I love buy one get one free or 50% off......in the book was a coupon for the matador so I took my husband for his b-day. The food was great, and my husband is hard to please. The enchiladas were some of the best I've had. They also gave us a complimentary fried ice cream that was awesome....I am giong back even without a coupon so it has to be good!!!! Pros: Great Food more

Don't look for Tex-Mex 5/22/2004

Don't look for Tex-Mex, Taco Bell or Heaven forbid ChiChi's-they serve dishes that don't exist in any culture! Look for REAL Mexican food. Not hot-unless you're the type to eat a pure jalapeno with your meals! Not ""Spicey!!"". It's just plain, good homecooked Mexican food. After living in Texas and California-we did afterall get them from Mexico-I looked forward to going to Mi Casa in Southgate. Soon discovered why the food was no longer pure Mexican...Tito (Red) Garza sold his share. So, Downriver no longer has to travel into the city. We have our own ""Mexican Kitchen"" Pros: Food, Family owned (nice), PRICES! more

Nasty, Nasty, Nasty 5/19/2004

Matador is absolutely the WORST immitation mexican food i have ever had. I ordered tacos. Simple huh? I got some nasty shredded dried beef that resembled beef jerky in a tortilla with Parmasean Cheese! Not regular Cheese, but cheese used in Italian restaurants..it was horribly disgusting. Save yourself, Taco bell is more authentic! Cons: , Food, Food more
