Vertigo's Favorite Vet 3/14/2009

Westside Animal Hospital is easily the best facility in Santa Cruz. As the granddaughter of a Veterinarian and someone quite familiar with the inner workings of a Vet practice, I am incredibly picky about the care of my pets. I always have tons of questions and often ask for alternatives to the therapy initially suggested. The Techs, Vets and Admin team are endlessly patient and supportive of my inquiries and concerns. The care my pets receive is first rate. The treatments offered by Westside Animal Hospital are cutting-edge as well as home-remedy. The advice that I have been given for the care of my pets always has their comfort and best interest at heart. Westside Animal Hospital is a small business and so often feels familial, with every client and pet a valued member of the extended family; I like that feeling. Pros: Vets who take the time to explain the options Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

The Best! 5/19/2008

We take our 3 dogs to Westside Animal Hospital and have the utmost trust and confidence in the care our precious ones receive from Dr. Dave and his wonderful staff. Our Sheltie had hip surgery there years ago and it was very successful -- I was able to go to the office and visit with her while she still required to stay there after the surgery. We drive across town to see Dr. Dave -- he's just the best! The other doctors Dr. Martinson and Dr. Craig -- sorry I probably got Dr. M's spelling wrong are equally wonderful. Pros: Great care Cons: I wish they were closer to where I live ;^) but I'll drive to get trusted and caring service more

You're great! 1/8/2008

Until a week ago, my husband and I were the delighted parents of three rescued cats who have all been lovingly cared for by the staff at Westside Animal Hospital for the past five years. Sadly, Max succumbed to old age last Wednesday, and the staff there recommended we "put him down". He was a magnificent cat. He would shake hands, roll over, wave "hello", and "kiss" you for the right treat. It was heart-breaking to say goodbye, but the empathy of the Westside staff was amazing. They prepared us emotionally the best they could, and sent us flowers the following day. Westside made an unbearable day one we could cherish as our last memory of Max. We believe they are the best vets in town. I suspect they might share with us a sentiment we found in this quote: "If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man but deteriorate the cat." ?Mark Twain. Pros: Kind, thoughtful, empathetic Cons: expensive, but worth it! more

Medical Doctor finds Westside Animal Hospital Great! 11/20/2007

After reading the last review complaining of being too expensive and the head Vet being too arrogant I thought I should add a few comments. more

Limited facility, money oriented vets. 8/10/2007

I should divulge that I do take my pets to this veterinary hospital, and I have for years. I have grown increasingly disenchanted with the place, though, and would have left by now if this wasn't the most convenient vet for me. The reasons for my negative feelings are many. First, the office and treatment (and surgery) areas are tiny. There are more modern and well-equipped vets in town. My dogs find the tight quarters frightening, and I don't recommend leaving an animal there overnight if you can help it -- tiny cages and little oversight. Second, this is very much a money-oriented business, even compared to local (very expensive!) emergency vets. The charges at Westside will shock you. Third, the practice has become less and less personal over the years, and they are even having vet techs do some of the exams now! The head vet is too egotistical to even deal with. On the good side, the support staff is excellent, and I highly recommend Dr. Martinelli. Overall, Westside is by no means a place to be avoided, but I'd recommend shopping around if you can. There are some truly wonderful vets, and nicer facilities, in other parts of town. Pros: Wonderful support staff. Cons: Impersonal, money-oriented feel overall. Tiny and poorly-equipped facility. more
