They towed my car from a private lot behind my friend's apartment building. I did not leave my car for more than 20 minutes and it was towed. Usually you can get away with 30 minutes parked in a permit-only zone, but not with these guys. When I called the number on the sign, a man picked up and told me it was going to be 150 dollars CASH, and that he could only take cash because ""the snow storm had their card system down"". I know this isn't true because every other person I have talked to who have had experiences with them have told them some lame excuse for why they take cash only. I have also read many reviews on them and they charge people different amounts, probably depending on how well business went that week. \r
When I got to the towing place, the man inside was very rude and told me that I would have to wait for the man who actually towed my car to come back and file the paperwork. It does not make sense that that needed to happen, but I didn't question it. He said it would be five minutes and made me wait outside in 18 degree weather for this other guy to show up. 15 minutes later when he did, we went inside to fill out some short paperwork. I was unsure about my tab number because it is a new car, but he really didn't seem to care. I think he just needed to write something down. My friend and I expressed to them we knew very well that 150 dollars was too much money. I have never paid more than 95 dollars to retrieve my car from an impound lot, and that was when they had to hold it there for a day. My car had been in the lot for maybe 15 minutes at this point. They argued with us that they were ""just doing their job"" and told me that I could come back later and talk to the manager if I felt that the whole thing was ""unjust"", but that 150 was the set price by the city of Richmond. We felt totally helpless and used having to give them the 150 cash. There is not much you can do when they are holding your car for ransom!!!\r
It is terrible that these guys have been getting away with this for several years. I am going to file a legit complaint, but I know I must not be the first person so I doubt it'll do any good. \r
Property management in Richmond need to stop giving Marshall Brothers Towing business.
