Outside of Chicago, this is the only other authentic pizza available. When in Chicago, it's Girodano's, but here in Austin, it's Mangia. My wife loves the thin Margherita on crust rolled extra thin and I love the real deal deep dish stuffed pizza. It's excellent quality and although some say Mangia is more expensive than some other pizzeria, I've not noticed that to actually be true for my family. Even if I order from a national local deliver franchise, it still costs the same. The difference is the quality of the pizza, the satisfaction of the service and product, and of course the value. In my opinion, there is no better value for truly authentic Chicago style pizza than Mangia on Mesa. Keep Rex on the Mesa! Mangia (eat) a pizza on Mesa today! more

Mangia is the closest to Chicago stuff crust style pizza in Austin. No other place comes close on that count. It's not great Chicago style like you'll get in Chicago at Giordinos or Gino's East, but its good and I come here regularly. I don't like the wheat crust, but the regular is good. There's lots of cheeze that doesn't always get cooked in the deep pie. The toppings are usually plenty and the service here is great. I pick up and dine it. their open late at night. They have other items that are good. I've had the salads and the french fries are good. They also have beer and root beer and Dublin Dr. Pepper. I recommend this place. more

never been to a Mangia restaurant. It was good. As a matter of fact, it was great food. I have never in the past reviewed restaurants but recently started and see it a great tool to share my experiences with my fellow diners. I've never been so full in my life. I was looking forward to some different pizza... neither my wife nor I finished one slice... so much basil it almost tasted like mint, and the main topping appeard to be campbell's tomato soup. Cons: yucky pizza more

If I could give this place no stars, I would. It's pretty obvious that anyone who has ranked this pizza higher than one star has never had a real chicago stuffed pizza, and probably ranks Mr. Gatti's right up there among the best pizza they've ever eaten. A real chicago stuffed pizza takes about an hour to cook not 20 minutes, and most importantly a slice of it CANNOT be picked up and eaten by hand. The crust on this piece of joy was a crisp flour crust (no sign of corn meal), the toppings were dominosesque, the cheese had actually hardened up in the pie when it came out to us, and it should have spilled out like molten lava. And worst of all the sauce tasted like Ragu with a splash of cayenne added just to make things interesting. Bottom line, I hate this place and also anyone who has ranked it high just because you are associated with perpetuating the myth that Mangia has decent pizza. I'm continually amazed at how bad the pizza is here in austin/round rock compared to everywhere else I've ever lived. If there are any transplants out there who have ever lived outside of Texas and can give advice on a good pizza place you found here, I would love to here about it. Cons: everything more

This Austin landmark chain has a laid-back feel and a friendly, if off-beat, staff. The pizzas come in a variance of sizes and styles, and specializes in picante, salsa and Southwestern dishes. But perhaps the best part is that you can bring your own beer or wine to compliment whatever pizza you order. Pros: Tasty deep-dish and a lively ambiance. Cons: Because the pizzas are made on the premises, it sometimes takes awhile to make them. more

I don't know where you people have had pizza that you think this is the best in Austin but it certainly isn't chicago. I would rather eat at pizza hut than eat here again. Nothing was good about it. Why they even have Chicago in their name is beyond me. Sauce is bad, toppings nothing special, meat average. How this place is voted best in Austin is scary.. I was craving a stuffed spinach Mangia's Pizza tonight so I called at 6:30pm and placed a pick up order. They told me it would be read in 25-30 minutes. I got there around 7:05 and it was not ready. At 7:20pm we found out they had not even put the pizza in the oven. At 7:30pm when the order still was not ready we asked for our money back so we could leave. We told the manager that the order was placed an hour ago and he told us that our order must have been overlooked and it would only be 15-20 more minutes! I've always been a fan of Mangia's but I don't think I'll be going back after this experience. Cons: Customer Service more

Tried this place simply for the fect that it was rated high on this list (plus it has our hometown in the name). The sauce was like a canned spaghetti sauce. Cheese was ok. Mushrooms, canned. Pros: Service was friendly & attentive Cons: Not chicago style pizza! more

Having lived in Chicago for a number of years, and also New York and Boston for 10 years, I have to say Boston's italian district is the benchmark for pizza. New York also has better pie. I agree that this place isn't authentic Chicago style pie, and to quote Martha Stewart, ""that's a good thing"" Hell, Conan's pizza is better than just about anything I've found in Chicago. Giordano's is the only Chicago pizza place that is truly worth the trip. That place kicks everyone's butt. Mangia is A+ one time and C- the next. I have only ordered from Mangias, so I know nothing of its ambiance, but I can definitely speak for the food. The Chicago stuffed pizza is the best in Austin, but mainly because I don't think there is much of a comparison. The crust light an crispy, just the way I like it. The pizza was not as thick as I wanted it to be, but it was good nonetheless. I have been to Chicago and it is almost on par with one of the Chicago restaurants there I have been to, but it is FAR FAR FAR FAR from Giordano's Chicago Stuffed Pizza in Chicago! I hold Giordanos to be the best stuffed pizza I ever have and it will be VERY hard to beat. As for Austin, I say MANGIAS! Pros: Best stuffed pizza in Austin. Great crust! This has got to be my favorite pizza place. It's a little pricey for my budget but well worth the money! We got the pizza with garlic, mushrooms and broccoli and it was heaven. It was cheesy and thick. We also got a sub and that was delicious as well. We brought our own beer and sat out in the picnic table. Great dinner with friends! I don't understand how this place stays in business and gets such good reviews. Being from Chicago I had high expectations, but was very dissapointed. This is among the worst pizza I've ever tasted, it's overpriced, and just plain lousy. I've heard people compare them to Lou Malnati's, what a joke. This place would never make it in Chicago! Have have only been to Chicago once, but this pizza is just as good, if not better than real chicago pizza! I love it. You can create you own combo's and order it just how you want it! Being from Chicago, Mangia's the closest to the deep dish from home. The crust's not as heavy as the crusts that are served on a Chicago pizza which is positive because you don't leave REALLY full from all the bread. I would recommend this pizza joint to any Chicagoian visiting the Austin area. more

Mangia's deep dish pizzas get alot of mention here but the thin crust is my favorite. The corporate places (i.e. pizza hut, domino's) just dont compare. I really love the type of thin pizzas with a really crisp crust, you can pick up a slice and it won't bend or sag. That is how Mangia's are, (unless of course you really pile on the toppings) and the whole wheat crust is excellent. I have also tried the philly's and they are good, just a little bit smaller than places that specialize in sandwiches. Burgers are good here as well. The fries are delicious, they are batter dipped in a slightly spicy batter.. And the chicken tortilla soup is worth trying. It's true the guad location doesnt have alot of seating, but if one of the picnic tables is open I'd say thats a perfect place to enjoy some great pie. Pros: delicious more
