Let me save you the ANGER! 3/27/2011

I am giving it one star because it does not give me the option of leaving no stars. I don't even know where to start. Dinner for six people, $400 with minimal drinks. more

bad food, ok service 6/28/2009

The food needs a lot of improvement to say the least. The most blah mexican I ever had. The staff is okay but they are definately trained to get you to SPEND money. From the staff who kept asking if we wanted fresh guac to the way too loud mariachi band that went table to table. They make it hard for the staff to hear what you're saying. Pros: the decor, good pina colada Cons: food, prices more

Not worth it! 4/25/2009

This place is a rip off. I couldn't believe they charged us $13.00 for small portion of guacamole. We were tricked into buying it. The waitress asked us if we would like ""some"" guacamole, along with chips and salsa. To our dismay, we were charged for the guacamole---why didn't she mention this to us at first. Furthermore, the service was very poor considering there were few patrons that Sunday afternoon. The steak he ordered was over cooked, and fatty. They also mistakenly gave me someone else's dish , and the waitress came back few minutes later saying ""so sorry that was not for you"" Took it out of my hands while I was already eating , and waited another 20 minutes for them to bring out the correct dish. Very disappointing , which at that point, I lost my appetite. We complained to the manager, but he just apologized. My husband and I will never go back to this place! Pros: Parking Cons: Poor service, Unprofessional, and over-priced more

I've seen better 2/19/2009

The atmosphere is great, the service and food are sub-par. As hard as it is to find a good Mexican place on the East Coast, this place does no justice to even a taco stand. Try Taqueria in Jersey City, you can treat all of your friends with with the money you'd spend on two here. more

Can't judge a book by its cover!!! 1/25/2009

6 of us went there for dinner and 6 of us were very dissapointed. The restaurant itself was beautiful but the service and food sucked.Small portions with bad flavor. The margaritas were good, but at $45 a pitcher it should be .All the reviews that I read were dead on about the service, food and especially the prices. The bill was absolutely shocking, they charge you for everything. The waiters walk around with tequilla and pour it in your mouth without asking and then charge you $11 dollards per shot. Also the guacamole is the best scam going, the ask you if you want it without telling you they cost $18 and its not even good. They did allow us to use the restroom for free, which was nice. Not worth it,and left hungry. more

Do not ruin your night! Choose another place! 11/17/2008

Saturday night we were all ready for a good time at mama mexico. We were seated on time, but had to wait for 20 minutes to see a menu. we were not served water for a while, we kept asking every wait staff member that passed us by till we finally got some water. The food got to the table 45 MINUTES after we ordered. it tasted horrible, the drinks were not good, either too much alcohol or not enough in the mix. The live music was nice most of the time, but about every other song was the happy birthday melody. we heard it maybe 25 times when we were there (we lost count after 20). You do not get what you pay for!!! When we complained they could not care less. If you value your money and your stomech and your chance of having a good time do not take your friends and loved ones there! Dont do it! Cons: bad service, bad food, over rated! more

A fun, tasty, colorful night...no real complaints here... 10/5/2008

Going out to eat is practically a hobby of mine. I've been to hole-in-the-wall places to ritzy places in NYC so I do have an idea of how restaurants should be. Pros: Amazing atmosphere (light color changes), delicious food & good drinks Cons: Valet only parking, slightly pricey, bill confusion more

Cheaters 8/25/2008

The place is nice and food good but 1) service was not good. We had to say everything 3 times. (2) There were 9 of us and from the time we arrived we all noticed the menu indicated ""18% gratuity included for 6 persons or more"". When the bill came they included 20% gratuity and when we inquired, they said it was because there were 9 of us. It was good that my friend with us used to run a restaurant so she told them that this was wrong. (3) They charged us for a bottle of wine that we initially ordered and which we cancelled since they suggested that we order another bottle (could have been an honest mistake). (4) Two of our friends ordered the same food and we were charged $1 more than indicated on the menu. When they changed the bill, we shaved off $66 from the total. Can you believe that? Can you imagine if they overcharge $1 per table how much they would get? You can still eat there, just make sure you check your bill thoroughly!! more

Mama Mexico (103rd Street, Manhattan) 4/25/2008

this was my third visit here. My first was on a really, really bad blind date. I ended up leaving after only a drink, but I remembered the lively crowd and the colorful decor and knew I would return. I've now been two other times and my visits were consistent: great food and great service. I actually expected bad service my first time there because the place was packed and it was a while before the maitre 'd could acknowledge us, but my water glass was never empty, and the service was prompt, friendly and gracious. the food both times was flavorful, well prepared, and pleasing to the eye. I have worked for years in this industry at some of the best, highest zagat rated restaurants in NYC so I sometimes can have a critical eye, and I am happy to have found a place that, for at least the two times I've visited, has exceeded my expectations. I fully plan to return. I took my father who was visiting from Texas (we know our Mexican food) and he was blown away. ALSO: the place has a roaming mariachi bands (fun!) and seems to be a great place for large parties of adults but may not be the best place for kids who want to run around. it's loud (but not annoyingly so) and the tables are tight, but I still love the place. Pros: sangria, guacamole, good for large, festive adult gatherings Cons: too loud for intimate moments more

Great authentic mexican, great service 2/15/2008

First of all the only reason why I'm not rating mama mexico with five stars is because I have to go back and see if everything is as great when it is a busier restaurant. We went the other night for my fathter in laws b day and had a really great experience. The service was very prompt, specials were described thoroughly, food came out with perfect timing. The size of the portions is also very generous. My sister and I shared an entree of grilled shrimp and skirt steak and it was cooked perfectly and so delicious. Pros: cuisine, service, music played Cons: lighting maybe a touch too bright more

BAD SERVICE, BAD FOOD, & RUDE !! 1/20/2008

If you were considering this place as one of your options, I BEG you DON'T GO. For the following reasons: Pros: Nice decorations & valet parking Cons: Don't speak English, Bad food, Dirty cup, and Bad service (= rude) more

NOT A GOOD OVERALL EXPERIENCE - AVOID 3/12/2007

Went here on Friday night March 9, 2007. Valet parking, which is nice, the lot is confusing with people and cars. Went inside, up the stairs we were greeted & immediately asked if we had a reservation we said no & they looked at us like we had three heads. They told us it would be at least a half an hour, we said ok & waited at the bar. The bar is in the middle of the restaurant set along the back wall makes the general area tight & there is nowhere sit & wait. Had a Margarita rocks & Corona. The Margarita was $10.00 & it was only in a 10-ounce glass. Not even in New York have we ever paid $10.00 for a Margarita on the rocks.Seated us with in 15 to 20 min just to the right of the bar. They briought chips & salsa to the table & ask would like fresh guacamole. BE CAREFUL-They ask before you read a menu; check the prices before you order. We knew there was a charge, they make it tableside, but $13.00 for guacamole. We were annoyed they don?t tell you the price. The entree prices high, i.e. steak is $32.00 (not Morton?s) shrimp is around $25.00. I had tacos, which I do love, but was a little disappointed there was green bell peppers in the beef otherwise my meal was quite good. We asked for sour cream and they charged us 2.50 for a tablepoon worth (unnecessary). He had the Super Burrito, which he said was the best ever had & we have been to Mexico several times. Supposed to get rice & beans, never received them, by the time the waiter came over; we finished our meal.Decided to have dessert, my husband was still hungry we had triple layer chocolate cake, it was just ok & Sopapillas, they only give four pieces. I had them was in Mexico & I got so many there was a pile with syrup & powdered sugar. At Pampano & Maya, you get a plate full & our bill at Pampano was $75.00. 2 cappuccinos clearly from a machine & awful. The bill was $89.00 FOR MEXICAN FOOD;$102.00 with tip. WE WOULD NOT GO BACK, we don?t even pay that much in the village & the food is twice as good. Pros: Fun Atmosphere, Valet parking Cons: Overpriced charged for every little thing, Service lacking, they need to re-evaluate there restaurant. more

HATE IT! 2/9/2007

The service was horrible!!!!! Large groups are given seats promptly while smaller groups or even parties of twos wait forever. Make sure u have plenty of time when u go there. Waiting for food is like 1 hr waiting for desert is 45mins.. And please, accept watever table the hostess gives u bec if not she'll get mad and give u an attitude. more
