Even though I had ordered from them before, they called me, not knowing how to get to my house and complained that it was too far to go with the tip I had included with my order ($4.00), so I said I would give him more money when he got here, which I did (I gave him an additional $5, which made it a $9 tip for a $35 meal). The driver also called when he was on his way because he had trouble finding the house. I have ordered 3 or 4 times before from them and never had this problem. I'd like to keep ordering from them because they have excellent food, but I really think I shouldn't be guilt-tripped into giving a larger tip. more

What the Doctor Ordered 12/27/2011

Hands down best Indian food in the area. Minus parking it is my favorite restaurant. I haven't been there this month yet, but go about once a month. There are not too many finer restaurants where the servers are attentive to kids. We have a 3 children age 4,6 and 8, that love going there. The servers are always great making the kids feel welcomed, and feel comfortable and bringing out drinks and papadam early so the kids are kept busy. The warm plate is a very nice touch that gets you excited that the food will be out in a few minutes. The taste of the food regardless if its a masala dosa, tandori chicken or a curry is outstanding. With our four year old we order a less spicy curry which they are very accommodating for and never have up charged us for anything extra that we have asked. I probably will not make it there till after the New Year, but it is highly delightful more

An indian ruby in the middle of Fort lee 12/27/2011

Cons: 1.) It's in a strip mall, without marked parking spots for the restaurant had to park at the end of parking lot. 2.) they served alcohol but did not have a bar to sit down at or a bar to eat food at. 3.) Entrees for dinner were in the 12-15 dollar price range Pros: 1.) taste of food 2.) friendly servers 3.) huge portions more

True Ethnic Food 12/25/2011

I am shocked how many ethnic restaurants have either ""Americanized"" their food or simply have tried saving money and let the quality go. THe Maharani has stayed true to the flavour of the motherland. Each entree had a unique flavor that went well even when mixed together. The staff was great, always had refills before my drinks where low, food came out quick. The only complaint we had was the ice cream we ordered for dessert was too cold and we had to let it sit for a while to thaw out. On a price point, you have to pay for quality. I have been to a few Indian take-outs, where they are not using real cuts of chicken breast, or its basically mostly curry with a few piece of meat. At the Maharani it was a big portion with tons of meat with enough curry. Each entree was in the 12-14 dollar range, and each entree was enough for 2 and a half adults. The owner/manager came out to our table shortly after getting our food. He was a jolly old man, who told us how he got started and random facts about Indian food, such as what a tandori is. I was shocked on how many Indians and other races where at the restaurant . If you want real ethnic food, enjoy quality and want an experience, I would highly recommend the Maharani. more

OUTSTANDING 12/22/2011

I travel a decent amount for business and love to try Indian restaurants in new cities. The Maharani has set themselves apart with service, quality and quantity. We were greeted promptly and were seated quickly even though they were extremely packed. The service was outstanding; I was with a friend whom had never tried Indian food and the wait staff was very accommodating explaining what all the food was. The mango lasi was very flavorful and the appetizers came out shortly after placing the order. The portion sizes were appropriate and the taste and flavor was out of this world. I will be back there when I am in New York again, and highly recommend it. more

AVOID THE MAHARINI- OWNER IS EXTREMELY NASTY 9/15/2011

Owner is extremely nasty........ I had been eating at the lunch buffet about once a month for years and all of a sudden he starts telling me I am eating to much at the buffet and that he is not making money on me. The all you can eat buffet is $10.95. I usually eat two big plates. He then tells me to leave a big tip for the waiter because I am eating so much and he is not making money on me. He should not be in the service business. I do eat alot, but some people come in for the buffet and dont eat that much. It is extremely unprofessional and nasty for him to tell me to leave a big tip. The restaurant is not sanitary. One time water was leaking from the ceiling and it was very close to the buffet. I question the why they did not move the open buffet away from the water leak in the ceiling. I will never go to this restaurant again. I have lived in fort lee 22 years and have been going there about 6 times a year for the last 21 years. Avoid this nasty man. He should retire now. He has since raised the price of the buffet to $12.95. AVOID THE MAHARINI!!!!!!! more

There is nothing Indian about it; cuisine nor hospitality 12/2/2009

Being an Indian, I feel ashamed that the owner has been fooling his customers for pieces of meat/vegetables supposedly presented as Indian food. What is more astonishing is that the person who needs a lesson or two in customer service is the manager (or owner) of this joint. If you go for dinner, he will always come and bug you saying that the hotel is going to close shortly; indicating please gulp up the cardboard pieces in front of you. One cant imagine, when i told him that chicken pakora is like rubber chicken, he said that he is in business for 22 years and what i was saying is wrong. We had a big argument, but he really needs to know how to talk with customers. I paid him 65 bucks but i guess 6.5 spent in MacDonalds across the street would be a good option next time. He is robbing his customers for so many years, no wonder he drives a Mercedes!!! Pros: Spent money on ambience Cons: Not enough place to write them more

Worst indian restaurant ever 11/2/2007

Our experience with Maharani has been terrible on more than 1 occasion. The food is awful but more than that the service is even worse. Upon ordering delivery, we have been charged more than what we were told twice. They add $5 delivery charge without telling you in advance and refuse to tell you even upon asking. On top of that, their manager is extremely rude and obnoxious. I have never had any instance where the delivery guy comes and starts yelling at your door with any other restaurant except Maharani. I would certainly not order food from them ever again and would never recommend them to anyone else. more

Reliable, Tasty Indian Food! 6/21/2007

I have only good things to say about Maharani for dining-in and take-out. I haven't been on a weekend, but on weeknights it's easy to get a table without reservations. The service is friendly and attentive, but not hovering or pressuring. The prices are a bit more than on the Lower East Side, but the atmosphere is nicer. They have some of the best palak paneer I've ever had, it tastes very spinachy-fresh; the samosas are huge; and I love the shrimp buhna (which I haven't had anywhere else, but confidence in Maharani encouraged me to try something new). There aren't many Indian restaurants near me, so I feel lucky to have Maharani about 20 minutes away. I highly recommend it. Pros: Tasty food, easy parking, pleasant service, quick seating more

Exquisite food, courteous wait staff, fantastic overall experience?.a must try! 11/30/2006

I found Maharani Indian restaurant to be a transcending experience, while transporting me to India. I felt as though I was being treated as a Maharaja (a king)! I enjoyed the quiet dining room and dim lighting to be a great environment to enjoy my ethnic dinner. The wait staff was courteous and professional; while the food was prepared to order and tasted fantastic! I would highly recommend Maharani to friends, family and colleagues for a quick business lunch (buffet) or an exotic dinner spread! A great tip - try the Mango Lassi?the best tasting Mango drink! Pros: great food, great location, good service, great overall experiance Cons: parking can sometimes be busy more

Avoid the terrible service here 9/4/2006

The food was ok, but at $15 for the average dish, this would be considered overpriced for Manhattan (let alone, Fort Lee, NJ). My friend asked for a recommendation for a spicy dish, and the waiter came up with the lame reply that ""we can make anything spicy"". When my friend again asked for a recommendation, the waiter still couldn't offer up any suggestion. After the four of us selected our main courses, the waiter then pushed a very hard and annoying sell on the appetizers and drinks, going around the table to ask each one of us separately if we wanted anything, even though I had specified he should just bring 4 glasses of water.\r \r What took the cake was how stingy they were with the rice. They brought 1 small bowl for 4 people. When I asked for an additional bowl, they told us to finish the original one first. After we asked for our third bowl, the waiter went over to the computer and immediately started typing. When I got the bill I noticed that our third bowl of rice had incurred a $3.95 charge. When I told the manger to wipe that off the bill because we were never informed, he refused to do so, claiming ""I am not the owner here"". This is not to mention that they were kind enough to add a 15% gratuity directly to our bill.\r \r With service like this, I don't know how they would ever generate repeat business. Not surprisingly, the restaurant was fairly empty when I was there. Pros: food was ok Cons: awful service, rude waitstaff more
